 Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately.
 You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
 This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
 The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the
answers.
 The intended marks for the questions or parts of questions are given alongside
the questions.
 Section I is compulsory. Attempt any four questions from Section II.
 This question paper contains 12 printed pages.

SECTION I (40 Marks)

other.
a) Which wire will have more resistance?
b) Which wire will have more specific resistance? [2]

(iii) A body of mass 500 g is moving with a speed of 10 ms-1. A force acts on
it which makes it to move with a speed of 20 ms -1. Find :
a) the change in kinetic energy of the body,
b) the work done by the force on the body. [2]

(iv) a) Name two factors on which the direction of force experienced by a


current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field depends.
b) Which rule helps you to determine the direction of force acting on a

(v) Define moment of force. Write the relationship between the S.I. and

(i) The mechanical advantage of a machine is 5 and its efficiency is 80%. It
is used to lift a load of 200 kgf to a height of 20 m. Calculate :
a) the effort required
b) the work done on the machine. (g=10 ms-2) [3]

(ii) a) Which physical quantity does the electron volt measure?


b) State the principle of conservation of energy.
c) Name the form of energy which a body may possess even when it is
not in motion. [3]

(iii) A uniform metre scale can be balanced at the 70.0 cm mark when a
mass of 0.05 kg is hung from the 94.0 cm mark.
a) Draw a diagram of the arrangement.
b) Find the mass of the metre scale. [4]

(ii) Orange light of wavelength 6600 Å travelling in air gets refracted in
water. If the speed of light in air is 3 x 10 8 ms-1, and the refractive index

(i) A man standing 25 m away from a wall produces a sound and receives
the reflected sound.
a) Calculate the time after which he receives the reflected sound , if the
speed of sound in air is 350 ms–1.
b) Will the man be able to hear a distinct echo ? Give a reason for your
answer. [3]

(ii) Two pendulums C and D are suspended from a wire as shown in the
figure given below. Pendulum C is made to oscillate by displacing it from
it’s mean position. It is seen that the D also start oscillating.

a) Name the type of oscillation D will execute.


b) If the length of D is made equal to C then what difference will you
notice in the oscillation of D?
c) What is the name of the phenomenon which occurs when the length

(iii) a) A bucket kept under a running tap is getting filled with water. A
person sitting at a distance is able to get an idea when the bucket is
about to be filled.

(ii) The diagram below shows an insulated copper wire wound around a
hollow cardboard cylindrical tube. Answer the questions that follow:

a) What are the magnetic poles at A and B when the key K is closed?
b) State one way to increase the strength of the magnetic field in this
coil without changing the coil.
c) If we place a soft iron bar at the centre of the hollow cardboard and
replace the DC source by an AC source then will it attract small iron
