A private meeting, billionaires and a G6 Gulfstream:
The backstory on how Trump picked Vance for VP
Trump’s selection
is now the heir
apparent to his
MAGA movement
BY ALEX ISENSTADT
Two days before Donald Trump
named J.D. Vance as his running
mate, the Ohio senator boarded
real estate titan Steve Witkoff’s
G6 Gulfstream jet. His destination:
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm
Beach, Florida.
The surreptitious meeting, which
has not previously been reported,
helped to solidify Trump’s decision
to pick the 39-year-old freshman
senator as his running mate. Trump
had spoken with North Dakota Gov.
Doug Burgum and Florida Sen.
Marco Rubio, the other two vice
presidential contenders, earlier in
the week. To those familiar with
his deliberations, it was clear he
had been the most impressed with
Vance.
For Trump, the pick represent-
ed the selection of an heir appar-
ent to his MAGA movement — and
the latest stage of a relationship
that evolved from Trump’s initial
skepticism of Vance, to his full-on
embrace of a pol he now views as a
fierce loyalist.

Trump placed a bet on both the
appeal of their shared populism
and the promise of generational
change — elevating a 39-year-old
freshman senator from Ohio as the
MAGA movement’s heir apparent.
The selection will draw a contrast
not only with the 81-year-old Biden,

also Vice President Kamala Harris,

Democrats find first attack line against J.D. Vance
VP nominee has given
the Biden campaign
new fuel for its attacks
on Donald Trump
BY ADAM CANCRYN
AND LISA KASHINSKY
Democrats wasted little time
Monday turning Donald Trump’s
new running mate into a line of at-
tack, seeking to portray Ohio Sen.
J.D. Vance as an extremist on abor-
tion rights and an advocate of a far-
right agenda drafted by allies of the
former president.
The Biden campaign went into ac-
tion soon after Trump announced
his pick with a message intended to
steer the focus to the most extreme
elements of the Republican Party
and contrasting Vance with Vice
President Kamala Harris.
“Vance will do what Mike Pence
wouldn’t on January 6; bend over
backwards to enable Trump and
his extreme MAGA agenda, even
if it means breaking the law and no
matter the harm to the American
people,” Jen O’Malley Dillon, who
chairs President Joe Biden’s reelec-
tion campaign, said in a statement.
The campaign coupled its missive
with a press call immediately after
Trump announced his pick to detail
Vance’s vulnerabilities.
But it was on abortion where the
Biden campaign and its aides and
allies have focused much of their
immediate attention — an issue that
Democrats believe is a key vulnera-
bility for Trump and that would be a
critical element in a potential debate
between Vance and Harris. FRANCIS CHUNG/POLITICO

“I think to some extent, Jill Biden is sort of the chief of staff,” said former Reagan aide Ken Khachigian of the first lady’s role, “helping set the ship right when it has to be done, making things
