Toolbox Talk: Scaffold Work (External and Internal) on Construction Sites

Hazards and Control Measures:

1. Falls from Height:

o Control Measures:
 Install guardrails and toeboards on all open sides.
 Use fall protection equipment, such as harnesses and lanyards.
 Ensure scaffolding is erected and inspected by trained and competent
personnel.
 Maintain three points of contact when climbing.
2. Scaffold Collapse:
o Control Measures:
 Conduct regular inspections to ensure structural integrity.
 Do not exceed the scaffold’s load capacity.
 Ensure scaffolds are erected on stable, level ground with proper anchoring.
 Follow manufacturer guidelines for scaffold assembly and disassembly.
3. Falling Objects:
o Control Measures:
 Use tool lanyards to secure tools.
 Install toeboards and debris nets to catch falling materials.
 Keep work areas tidy and secure loose materials.
 Establish controlled access zones below scaffolds to keep non-essential
personnel out.
4. Weather-Related Hazards:
o Control Measures:
 Monitor weather conditions and avoid working on scaffolds during high
winds, rain, or icy conditions.
 Secure scaffolding during adverse weather to prevent movement or
collapse.
 Use non-slip footwear and keep platforms clear of ice and debris.
5. Electrocution:
o Control Measures:
 Maintain a safe distance between scaffolding and power lines.
 Use insulated tools and equipment when working near electrical
installations.
 De-energize electrical equipment when possible before working near it.
 Train workers on electrical hazard awareness.

Hazards and Control Measures:

1. Falls from Height:

o Control Measures:
 Use full-body harnesses with lanyards attached to secure anchor points.
 Install guardrails and barriers around open shafts.
 Ensure proper lighting and clear marking of shaft edges.
2. Falling Objects:
o Control Measures:
 Use tool lanyards and secure all tools and materials.
 Install toeboards and debris nets.
 Prohibit work above or below other workers within the shaft
simultaneously.
3. Confined Space Hazards:
o Control Measures:
 Ensure proper ventilation in confined spaces.
 Conduct air quality tests before entry.
 Provide training on confined space entry and emergency procedures.
4. Electrocution:
o Control Measures:
 De-energize electrical equipment in the vicinity of the work area.
 Use insulated tools and wear rubber-soled shoes.
 Maintain safe distances from live electrical components.
5. Moving Equipment:
o Control Measures:
 Coordinate with lift operators to ensure lifts are not moved while workers
are in the shaft.
 Use lockout/tagout procedures for mechanical equipment.
 Ensure clear communication and establish signals between workers and
equipment operators.

Toolbox Talk: Climbing Up and Down a 24-Meter Scaffold

Hazards and Control Measures:

1. Falls from Height:

o Control Measures:
 Maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or two feet and
one hand) at all times.
 Always face the ladder or access point when climbing.

Carry tools in a tool belt or secure them to the scaffold, keeping hands free
for climbing.
 Wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to a secure anchor point.
2. Structural Instability:
o Control Measures:
 Inspect the scaffold regularly to ensure it is stable and properly assembled.
 Ensure scaffolding is not overloaded and weight is evenly distributed.
 Verify that the scaffold is securely anchored and set on a stable base.
3. Falling Objects:
o Control Measures:
 Use tool lanyards and secure all tools and materials while climbing.
 Ensure guardrails and toeboards are in place and secure.
 Keep the work area tidy to prevent objects from being knocked off.

Toolbox Talk: Object Fall Hazard from Slab Edges and Scaffolding

Hazards and Control Measures:

1. Falling Tools and Materials:

o Control Measures:
 Use tool lanyards to secure tools and prevent them from falling.
 Install guardrails and toeboards on slab edges and scaffolding.
 Use safety nets below working areas to catch falling objects.
 Keep work areas tidy and free of loose materials.
2. Inadequate Guardrails and Toeboards:
o Control Measures:
 Ensure guardrails and toeboards are properly installed and maintained.
 Conduct regular inspections to verify the integrity of guardrails and
toeboards.
 Train workers on the importance of maintaining these safety features.
3. Insecure Storage:
o Control Measures:
 Store materials away from the edges of scaffolding and slab edges.
 Use storage bins or racks to organize tools and materials.
 Secure all stored items to prevent them from being knocked off.
4. Inadequate PPE:
o Control Measures:
 Ensure all workers wear hard hats and safety glasses at all times.
