ASSIGNMENT – I

UNIT – I

SET – I

1. (a) Explain the power handling capability and line losses in EHV lines and discuss the
useful conclusions from it.
(b) A power of 2000 MW is to be transmitted from a super thermal power station in
central India over 800 km to Delhi. Use 400 kV and 750 kV alternatives. Suggest the
number of circuits required with 50 % series capacitor compensation, and calculate the
total power loss and loss per km.
2. (a) Develop the expression for inductances for the three modes propagation of the
electromagnetic energy of the waves generating them.
(b) The dimensions of a 3-phase 400-kV horizontal line are: H = 16 m, S = 12 m phase
separation, conductor 2 × 3.18 cm dia, and B = 45.72 cm. Calculate. (i) the matrix of
inductances per km, for untransposed configuration, and (ii) the same when there is
complete transposition.
SET – II

1. A sphere gap with the spheres having radii R = 0.5 m has a gap of 0.5 m between their
surfaces. (i) Calculate the required charges and their locations to make the potentials 100
and 0. (ii) Then calculate the voltage gradient on the surface of the high-voltage sphere.
(iii) If the partial breakdown of air occurs at 30 kV/cm peak, calculate the disruptive
voltage between the spheres.
2. (a) A power of 12,000 MW is required to be transmitted over a distance of 1000 kM.
Determine the current and total line losses if the magnitude of both the sending and
receiving end voltages are 750 kV, with a 300 phase difference in the voltages between
the sending and receiving end.
(b) Describe the theory of aeolian vibrations and waked induced oscillations on EHV
conductors and suggest measures to minimize the damage due to them.

1. (a) Describe the behaviour of space-charge effects inside a corona envelope and discuss
why load current cannot flow in a conductor inside this envelope even though it is a
conducting zone.

(b) Derive the expression 𝑃𝐶 = 2 𝐾𝐶 𝑉𝑚2 − 𝑉𝑜2 for the energy loss from the charge-voltage

diagram, shown in figure.

2. (a) What is a bundled conductor? Show that equivalent radius of a bundled conductor is

(b) The configurations of some e.h.v. lines for 400 kV to 1200 kV are given. Calculate

(ii) 750 kV : N = 4, d = 3.46 cm, B = 45 cm
(iii) 1000 kV : N = 6, d = 4.6 cm, B = 12 d
(iv) 1200 kV : N = 8, d = 4.6 cm, R = 0.6 m.

(b) Explain the procedure for measuring radio interference and radio interference voltage.
2. Discuss the convenience offered by using modes of propagation and possible uses of this
technique.

(b) Discuss the frequency spectrum of the radio interference field produced in a EHV
line.
2. (a) Explain the generation and measurement of audio noise due to corona in EHV lines.
(b) List out different corona loss formulae and explain each one.

1. (a) Explain properties of pulse trains and its filter response.
(b) Write a short notes on radio interference excitation function due to corona.

1. For a fixed of transmission explain how the economic choice of voltage level is selected
in DC transmission system.
2. Explain the technical development in control & protection, for better performance and
reliability of DC transmission system.

SET – I

1. Draw the schematic circuit diagram of a 6 – pulse Greatz’s circuit and explain its
operation.
2. Explain the individual characteristics of Rectifier and an inverter with sketches.

SET –II

1. With the help of a neat circuit diagram explain the operation of a 3-phase, 6-pulse,
Graetz’s circuit when operating with a firing angle of 300 . Also draw the following
waveforms to scale when working as a rectifier with α = 300 and overlap angle = 150 i)
output d.c voltage ii) valve current iii) secondary phase current of the converter
transformer. And hence estimate the average d.c voltage on the output side.

2. Explain the commutation process in six-pulse graetz circuit during rectification process
with the help of suitable waveforms. Also show that the equivalent resistance of a
converter is equal to (3ωLc)/π, where ‘’ is the angular frequency and ‘Lc’ is the effective
inductance associate with converter per phase 3

SET –III

1. Prove that the aggregate valve rating of a 3-phase, two way bridge rectifier is 2.094 Pd
with the help of relevant waveforms. Mention the assumptions made.
2. a) Draw schematics of any four different converters that can be adopted for a 3-phase six
pulse dc conversion system.
b) For a 3-phase bridge circuit, the secondary line voltage is 400 kV rms with a reactance
per phase of 40 ohms. Find the dc output voltage and the commutation overlap angle if
the output current is 2000 A. Assume the delay angle to be 150 .

1. a) Discuss about synchronous condensers and static VAR system for reactive power
compensation in HVDC systems.
b) Discuss about conventional strategies for reactive power control of HVDC converters
Explain the individual characteristics of Rectifier and an inverter with sketches.
2. a) Discuss about alternate reactive power control strategies for HVDC link.
b) Discuss how reactive power requirement is met using synchronous condensers.

1. a) Explain the necessity of reactive power control in HVDC link.


b) Discuss the methods of Compensation of reactive power in HVDC substation. Draw
simple single line schematics for each.
2. a) Discuss about alternate reactive power control strategies for HVDC converters
b) Discuss how reactive power requirement is met using shunt capacitors and AC filters

influence of network admittance on design aspects.

filters.
b) Explain in detail the design aspects of a single tuned filter.
2. Discuss about various types of AC filters and explain in detail the design aspects of a high
pass filter

SET –III

1. A) Discuss about various types of AC filters employed in HVDC systems. Also draw the
their impedance characteristics.
b) Discuss the need of dc filters and the role of smoothing reactor in reducing the
harmonics on dc side.
2. A) What are the adverse affects of Harmonics produced by the HVDC converters?
b) Using fourier analysis show that the lowest order voltage harmonic present in d.c.
output of a six-pulse bridge ciruit is ‘6’.
