A. SAFETY PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT
1. Receipt of PPE, understands Company’s PPE Matrix, Location and donning of life jacket / immersion suit.
2. Location of mustering stations, fire stations, emergency exits/escape routes.
3. Location and operational procedures of Life Saving Appliances, launching arrangements, etc.
4. Location and operational procedures of Fire Fighting Equipment (including type and use of fire
extinguishers carried, fire detection panels, fire main isolation valves, etc.).
5. Fire Fighting in relation to cargoes carried.
6. Safety symbols, signs and alarm signals.
7. Location of hospital, medical locker, stretcher and defibrillator.
8. Any special food requests / allergies (food included), medication are communicated to the Medical Officer
and or Ship’s Master.
9. Cyber Security induction as per Company’s procedures.
B. INITIAL BRIEFING
1. Company’s policies, vision and mission.
2. Brief explanation of the structure of the Company and the various activities it is involved in.
3. Understanding and capability of describing the meaning of safety and environmental performance.
4. Description of duties and responsibilities and briefing on job specific SMS procedures and checklists.
5. Shipboard and job specific hazards and applicable safe working practices.
6. Rules and regulations to be followed and way of behavior on board - code of discipline.
7. Ability to communicate with other persons on safety matters.
8. Briefing on the importance of identifying and reporting any safety, health and environmental violation
through Company’s open reporting procedure.

C. DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB SPECIFIC PROCEDURES
On-signer to make a walk-around with his supervisor, introducing himself to other officers and crew, visiting all
pertinent vessel’s locations and familiarizing himself with all vessel equipment/machinery which he will operate. Where
possible he should operate the equipment under the supervision of his supervisor in order to gain hands-on experience.
1. Normal watchkeeping/work hours and applicable fatigue rules. How to record hours of work.
2. Awareness and acceptance (sign) of Master’s standing orders.
3. Duties of OOBW, bridge posters and checklists and specific responsibilities when serving as an OOBW.
4. Responsibilities and authority related to his rank.
5. Operation of all primary and secondary bridge equipment required for safe navigation, and watch keeping
including:
a. Steering gear, including manual, autopilot, tiller and emergency.
b. Navigation and signal lights.
c. Alarms including unmanned engine room procedures & dead man alarms as applicable.
d. Sound signalling apparatus.
e. ECDIS operation and procedures
f. Radar, ARPA, GPS, Echo sounder, Speed Log , BNWAS, AIS, Course recorder, Gyro/Magnetic
Compass, VDR and other bridge indicators and instrumentation. Integrated bridge system functions
(where applicable).
g. Ship specific ECDIS training. All deck officers shall be trained on the use of the particular ECDIS
system that is available on the bridge of the vessel each time they join a vessel. This training will be
conducted in the presence of the Master or the C/O following the ECDIS familiarization form N-020.
h. EPIRB and RADAR transponders.
i. Satellite communications system.
j. Telegraph including control of M/E.
k. External, internal and portable communication equipment and systems.
l. Alarms, remote controls, stops and trips.
m. Bridge equipment feed Procedures from emergency supply.
n. LSA - Fire detection and fire fighting indications and controls on the bridge
o. Ancillary bridge equipment (e.g. binoculars, signalling flags, meteorological equipment, whistle, etc.).
6. Operational guidance for GO and specific responsibilities when serving as a GO (applicable for GO).
7. Operation of all radio and bridge equipment required for the safe execution of duties including GMDSS,
Main Transmitter, Main & Aux. receivers, INMARSAT-C, etc. Maintenance status and PΜS of Radio and
Bridge electronic equipment and batteries including outstanding maintenance items (applicable for GO).
8. Reception of time signals via radio including log-book keeping requirements, weather reports via NAVTEX,
Inmarsat C, weather facsimile, including Navtex & Inmarsat C Navigation Warnings messages from
NAVAREAS, & MSI messages etc. (applicable for GO).
9. Location of transmission and reception antennas and their fittings including Radar, VHF, GPS, SATCOMS,
GMDSS, etc. (applicable for GO).
10. Location of radio-communication or radio-navigational equipment malfunctioning and NOT IN SERVICE
and Actions taken. (Applicable for GO).
11. Record keeping requirements, GMDSS log, etc. (applicable for GO).
12. Storage location and correction procedures of all radio station guides and other publications (applicable for
GO).
13. Appreciation of vessel’s manoeuvring capabilities as indicated in the “Wheelhouse poster” fitted in the
Bridge.
14. Bridge posters and checklists.
15. Medical records (applicable for Second Officer (Medical Officer)).
16. Records of past and planned deck maintenance and pending items.
17. Construction and layout of cargo, ballast, bunker tanks and void spaces.
18. Ballast pipeline systems, valves, pumps, position and construction.
19. Gas detection systems of ballast, pump room, void spaces, and Accommodation Spaces.
20. Storage location and correction procedures of ECDIS ENCs, Paper Charts, NTMs, Pilot Books and other
nautical Hydrographic publications either in Hard Copy or in Electronic Format ( e-NPs – ADPs) etc.

2. Location and mode of operation of various units of emergency equipment including emergency fire pump,
emergency diesel generator/batteries, life boat engine, emergency lights, emergency fire air dampers,
emergency foam release, emergency air compressor, emergency bilge suction, etc.
3. Location and use of antipollution equipment including clean-up equipment, spill containment gear,
pneumatic pumps, etc.
4. Locate and understand operation of emergency stop mechanism for main engines including other emergency
stop valves.
5. Ship Security Alert System.
6. Operating the fire doors, watertight and weather tight doors.
7. Location and operation of SSAS, two-way VHF radiotelephone, distress buttons of GMDSS equipment
(applicable for GO).
8. Knowledge of subsequent actions if fire or abandon ship alarm sounds.
9. Knowledge of subsequent actions if fire or smoke is detected.
10. Knowledge of subsequent actions if a man falls overboard.
11. Knowledge of immediate actions upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency before seeking
further medical assistance on board.
12. Special instructions necessary for use of the lifesaving appliances in severe weather and sea conditions.
13. Knowledge of emergency arrangements in the event of main engine failure and blackout.
14. Knowledge of preserving VDR data in case of an emergency.

from your watch.

PART II, FAMILIARIZATION BEFORE TAKING OVER CARGO AND BALLAST HANDLING DUTIES

This form lists the minimum areas that, a Second (2nd) and Third (3rd) Officer should be familiar with before taking
over formal duties in the Cargo Control Room (CCR). His familiarization can be conducted by a fellow Second (2nd)
or Third (3rd) Officer or the Chief Officer. In case that the familiarization is conducted by a fellow Second (2nd) or
Third (3rd) Officer, Chief Officer has to verify the familiarity of the officer with the equipment and procedures before
appointing him as the Officer in Charge during cargo and ballast handling. If for any reason the familiarization is not
completed before the first watch in the CCR, the Second (2nd) or Third (3rd) Officer is accompanied by Chief Officer
during the watch keeping duties.
