Ag Eng. Prelim Exam

1. Discuss why agricultural engineering is the most versatile branch of Engineering?

ANSWER:
Agricultural Engineering is the most versatile branch because it is concerned with the application
of all fields of engineering science and technology to the art, science, and bussiness of crop
cultivation, animal husbandry, and product handling , processing, preservation, storage,
manufacture and distribution. The use of technology not only makes agricultural easier butvit
also make it faster, allowing the farmer to be more productive in both production and post
production operations.
2. Enumerate and discuss the six(6) major areas of speciallization in Agricultural Engineering.
ANSWER:
6 Major areas in Agricultural Engineering:
1.)Farm Power and Machinery Engineering – this domain is concerned with the design,
construction, operation, and maintenance of all types of power and equipment systems used in
Agricultural mechanization.
2.)Soil and Water Conservation Engineering- the harnessing and control of the ecosystem’s soil
and water resources is a part of agricultural engineering. Land degradation soil and water
conservation, land reclamation, irrigation technology, land drainage systems, water supply,
catchment modeling, hydrology and hydraulic, agricultural waste management, and the
environment are all topics covered in this domain.
3.)Post Harvest Systems Engineering- all of the activities, processes, structures, and machinery
that turns agricultural raw materials (harvesting crops) into completed consumer commodities
fall under this category.
4.Farm Structures and Environmental Control Engineering- it control environmental parameters
such as temperature, humidity, light and air in farm building, as well as agriculturalwaste
management.
5.)Food Engineering- with this processing and equipment needed to transform agricultural
products into consumable foods. This option covers the operation of feed mills, rice mills, flour
mills, vegetable oil processing, beverage manufacturing, and confectionary machines for baking
and sweet. In general it changes the way food processing industries operate and are managed.
6.)Emerging Areas in Agricultural Engineering- as it is adopts to the new advances and
difficulties, Agricultural Engineering is undergoing big and significant changes. These growing
areas include: information and communication technology, biotechnology, environmental
engineering, renewable energy, and ecological engineering.

3. How would your knowledge in Agricultural Engineering helps a farmer to become over useful in
his/her farming in Agricultural production activities?

ANSWER:Agricultural Engineers work on issues such as agricultural equipment, water quality and
management, biological products, animal facilities, food processing, and a variety of other topics in
agriculture.
4.How would application of Agricultural Engineering principles/ technologies help solve our
country's dilemma of high cost production and low production?

ANSWER:

The applications of agricultural engineering helps to solve higher crop productivity, decreased
use of water, fertilizer and pesticides, which in turn keeps food prices down, reduced impact on
natural ecosystems. It also provides the main source of food, income of employment to their rural
population. However, improvements in Agriculture and land use are fundamental to achieving food
security, poverty alleviation and over all sustainable development.

5. How does agricultural Engineering contribute to;

a.) Natural development

b.) To sustainable agricultural production

c.) Environmental management, and

d.) Improve the quality of life of our farmers.

ANSWER:

a.) Natural development- natural resources such as land, water, plants and animal genetic
resources, as well as human needs for current and future generations, should be properly
managed and conserved, and technological and institutional change should be oriented
accordingly for sustainable rural development in this countries. It also worth nothing that such
sustainability should be non-degrading to the environment, technically sound, financially viable
and socially acceptable.
b.) To sustainable agricultural production- Agricultural Engineering has to play in increasing food
production, Agricultural development and reducing harm to the environment. Hand tools, animal
traction and tractors with complementary equipment are essential farm inputs, without them
food production would be possible.
c.) Environmental management- Agricultural Engineering applied to avoid, reduced and correct
adverse environmental impacts on a wide variety of fronts, including soil and plant
environments, and food safety. Solution methods explored make use of some of the newest
technological approaches including finite elements analysis, sensor design, geographical
information systems, and global positioning systems.
d.) Improve the quality of life of our farmers- Agricultural Engineering design and build agricultural
infrastructures such as dams, water reservoirs, warehouse, and other structures. They may also
helps engineer solutions for pollution control at large farms. Other projects underway include
improving water use and food security for the farmers
