ELECTRICAL SAFETY DURING THE RAINY OR WET SEASON
The frequency of accidents involving electrical shock, short circuits, and lightning-induced fires or
incidents is a cause for concern. Rainy seasons are particularly conducive to electrical damage. Given the
potentially fatal consequences of electrical hazards, it is important to address this topic with great
urgency.
DISCUSSION:
Have you encountered any electrical hazards during the rainy season
at work? How did you address them? This includes lightning incidents.
KEY SAFETY POINTS
1. General Electrical Safety:
Always assume that any electrical equipment or wiring is
live and dangerous.
Report any damaged electrical equipment or exposed
wiring immediately.
Keep a safe distance from overhead power lines and
ensure all machinery and tools are kept clear of them.
2. Handling Electrical Equipment:
Do not handle electrical equipment with wet hands or standing in water.
Ensure all electrical tools and appliances are dry before use.
Use insulated tools and wear rubber-soled shoes for additional protection.
Ensure high-quality residual circuit breakers are installed in Distribution Boards (DB).
3. Water and Electricity:
Water is an excellent conductor of electricity; avoid using electrical
equipment in wet conditions.
Keep electrical cords and outlets away from water sources.
4. Lightning Safety:
During thunderstorms, avoid using wired electrical devices.
Stay indoors and away from electrical appliances, plumbing, and
windows.
Unplug sensitive electronic equipment to protect them from power surges.
Ensure building lightning arrestors are functional to divert lightning to the ground safely.
5. Flooding:
Do not touch electrical equipment or outlets if you are standing in water.
If flooding occurs, shut off the main power supply to prevent electrical hazards.
Avoid using any electrical equipment that has been submerged until it has been inspected
and approved for use by a qualified electrician.
6. Emergency Preparedness:
Know how to shut off the power supply in case of an electrical emergency.
Keep a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires (Class C) nearby.
Ensure first aid kits are accessible and stocked for electrical injury treatments.
DISCUSSION:
Are there any additional measures we should implement to improve electrical safety during this
period?
