The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerlad is a critically acclaimed novel that aims to depict the 1920s,also
referred to as the Roaring 20s or the Jazz Age,in its truest form. After the 1st World War America
experienced significant economic expansion as well as a shift toward a consumer oriented
economy.American society as a whole evolved, leaving behind conventional and limiting beliefs and
embracing changes in fashion, music and societal structures. On the downside however, consumerism led
to this being an era of hedonism, indulgence and the pursuit of the american dream
This novel gives us insight into this world as it follows the story of a man named Jay Gatsby whose
longing to be a suitable companion for his one true love urges him to pursue a lifestyle of luxury and
wealth. However even after doing so his story remains tragic as
Already from these brief descriptions of the 2 books, there are large differences. These generally have to
do with the settings and the lifestyles of the characters
In the Great Gatsby people living on Long Island in either the east or west egg live in large mansions with
shimmering chandeliers, exoensive tiles, acres of lawn and fountains. They continuouely host extravegant
parties with blaring music, lights and feasts and hunreds of people.Naturally there is always a buzz. The
world that these people live in are wildly dofferent to the ones that most of us are in
In comparison the characters in Bone Gap live simplistically and lack the wealth .Finn and his brother
make frequent mention of their lack of finances and they live on a farm surrounded by fields and fields
of corn.
In the Great Gatsby the theme of appearances and image is very prominent specifically with Gatsby. He
lies and reinvents himself to hide his past
Wealth is idealised and those who possess it are fawned upon. This is true considering how and why
people even knew the name Gatsby,They heard about his riches, his extravegant parties and all the
materials that he possessed. The more wealth you had,the more important you were
Overall the characters feel more authentic and raw.We have normal teenagers like you and I with dreams
of escaping their mundane town, who are navigating their sexualities, who frequently explode with
emotion.Naturally none of them put up any fronts,we see their humanity. The writer gives us an insight
in.There is sincerity when it comes to love,Sean loves Roza for who she is,for her humour, her
intelligd=ence, the comfort that she gives him.F
Whereas in the great gatsby,it's hard to see much vulnerability of these seemingly shallow individuals
who are chasing something material. This story as a whole is about the superficiality of it all,of the people
at this time.Whereas in the great gatsby I found it hard to discern if the love the characters had for one
another existed.Gatsby describes Daisy's voice as full of money
These differences are mainly because of the time period the 2 stories are set in.
Although the character of Gatsby and Roza are similar in one way.Throughout the novel Roza is seen as
an object of every man's desire. She has an unfathomable beauty that everyone noticed, however when
she asked anyone why they loved her, when she asked the strange man why he loved her, they would
They never saw the person beneath that, nor did they care to
At the beginning of the novel Roza's grandmother tells her to look for a boy who will ''see'' her.As the
story progresses it becomes clear that the males around Roza view her as a beautiful object, almost like a
doll. And to them her beauty is what makes her worth it and desirable,Whenever she asks them why they
love her,it would only be because she of her physical appearance. No one ever cared to know her,to see
her intelligence, her courage.Similarly Gatsby never had anyone truly care about him as a person beside
for Nick.Frankly no one even knew who he really was,all they cared for was his money, his grandiose life
and the parties he threw. This is evident when no one showed up to his funeral
"one gentleman to whom I telephoned implied that he had got what he deserved. However, that was
my fault, for he was one of those who used to sneer most bitterly at Gatsby on the courage of Gatsby's
liquor and I should have known better than to call him" (9.69).
While in Bone Gap beauty was what people seemed to assign worth to,in the Great Gatsby it was
wealth. In turn both of these characters felt lonely
At the end of the book Gatsby asks Daisy to run away with him,to enjoy true love with him. However
Daisy decides to choose to stay with Tom and one of the reasons for this was because of the security
Tom provided. When she was with him,she knew that she'd always have every object she desired, she
would always be financially stable and taken care of.In reality she decided to choose stability over true
love
This is wildly different in Bone Gap.Even though Roza was given the finest garments and the greatest
castle to live in,she did not decide to stay with the strange man because deep down she knew that the
only man she loved was Sean and regardless of what the strange man offerred, she would rather be have
true love than anything else
