Horizontal Motion of a Projectile

The projectile motion is divided into two components: Horizontal and Vertical. Horizontal motion is defined
as projectile motion in a horizontal plane depending upon the force acting on it. For a short distance, the vertical
and a horizontal component of a projectile are perpendicular and independents of each other. The horizontal
component of a projectile is constant throughout the flight duration. This is because, after launching the projectile,
no horizontal force acts on it. So, the projectile travels horizontally at a constant speed. The first two equations
of kinematics should be written as;

Where;
𝑣𝑓𝑥 is the final horizontal velocity
Equation 1 𝑣𝑓𝑥 = 𝑣𝑖𝑥 = 𝑣𝑥 = 𝑣𝑐𝑜𝑠 Ɵ
𝑣𝑖𝑥 is the initial horizontal velocity
Equation2 𝑥 = 𝑣𝑥 𝑡 𝑣𝑥 is the horizontal velocity
x is the horizontal displacement/Range

The range, X of the projectile is the horizontal displacement travelled by the object projected obliquely
with some angle. Where Ɵ is the angle from the horizontal. This also assumes that the initial position is zero.

To obtain a horizontal motion, a projectile must be launched in a straight line, and not at any angle. The
velocity of the projectile varies, but the direction in which a projectile is launched should be perpendicular to the
surface of the earth.

A constant force of gravity acts upon the projectile which does not depend on the horizontal force, and is
used to launched the projectile. This means that the total time of flight of the projectile will always be the same.

By changing the initial velocity and force used to launch the projectile, the projectile may travel longer or
shorter distances in the same period of time. A projectile must be launched at a specific angle for long-distance
flight, such as missile, and the horizontal and vertical components must be determined in order for the projectile
to travel a greater distance. Some examples of horizontal motion are given below:

• The motion of the earth around the sun. • The motion of a billiard ball on the billiard table.
• A boat travelling in a river. • Throwing a ball or a cannon ball.
• A shell fired from a gun.
EXAMPLE: Given: Find: x =?
Suppose, you want to calculate the distance traveled by a bullet fired v = 370 m/s Solution:
from a gun with a horizontal speed of 370m/s with in 2s. t=2s x = vxt
x = 370m/s(2s)
x = 740m

ACTIVITY 1 ACTIIVTY 2
Direction: Give at least three examples of horizontal Direction: Solve the given problem. Show your
motion. solution.
1. If you are traveling a distance of 10,000 meters and
need to get to your destination within 1800s, how fast
