CVIF-DLP Learning Activities
Animal and plant cells have distinct organelles unique to their needs. These
organelles are mentioned below.
Organelles that are only present in Plant Cells:
Central Vacuole is a large membrane-bounded vesicle. It is responsible for
water absorption, which enables the cell to become larger. This indicates that
the central vacuole plays a major role in cell growth. Moreover, it is also
responsible for the storage of water and other chemicals.
Cell Wall is the outermost layer of the cell. It maintains the shape of the cell
and protects it from mechanical damage. It also prevents excessive water
uptake in plant cells.
Chloroplast
energy) into chemical energy stored in sugar molecules that can be used to
fuel its survival.
These three organelles are illustrated in Figure 5 below.
Figure 5. Some specialized cellular modifications found only in plant cells.
Organelles that are only present in Animal Cells:
Centrosome is often located near the nucleus, which contains a pair of
centrioles. This is where the microtubules are initiated or grow out. It also
helps in organizing the assembly of microtubules in animal cells.
Lysosome is an acidic compartment filled with digestive enzymes called
hydrolytic enzymes that are used to digest food, break down damaged
organelles for recycling, and destroy bacteria engulfed by the cell.
Exercise:
What cell type and domain do plant cells belong to? How about animal cells?
