About This Document PUBLIC 3
2 Introduction

SAP IoT is a collection of tools and applications built on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) that can
be used to create an administrative environment for managing and monitoring sensor data generated by
technical objects that are part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In addition to the API services, SAP IoT offers a
number of apps that are built upon the services and help you step inside the world of the Internet of Things.

High-level list of features provided by SAP IoT

The following features are available with SAP IoT:

Feature Description

Application Programming Interface (API) A collection of fine-granular micro-services that provide ac
cess to the core entities of SAP IoT Application Enablement:

● Authorization-related services
● Thing-related services (configuration, packages, things,
events, files)

Device Connectivity A fully integrated abstraction layer taking care of managing,

and connecting to, physical devices and protocols. Device
Connectivity presents the various kinds of physical devices
in a uniform way so that they can be easily matched with
their virtual counterpart, the things used in an IoT scenario.

IoT Edge Built-in support for processing sensor data at the edge as it
is required by high- speed processing scenarios as well as for
scenarios dealing with unreliable or slow data connection.

Tenant Administration UI A collection of lightweight apps for basic administrative

tasks:

● Persons
● Companies
● User Groups
● Object Authorization

Thing Modeler UIs Powerful apps for defining thing types, deriving things from
these types, and for monitoring the sensor data ingestion:

● Packages
● Thing modeler
● Thing Properties Catalog
● Data Ingestion Error Log

The Thing Modeler app is also used for associating a physi

cal device with a thing as its virtual twin, an activity known as
thing onboarding.

Rules UIs Apps for rule-based processing of events that occur during
ingestion of time series data. The apps cover the following
aspects:

● Rule definition
● Actions triggered by user-defined events
● Templates for notifications

Feature Description

Authorization Detailed authorization concept based on object instances

and functional scopes for each tenant, with the tenant acting
as a strictly isolated container.

Mass data processing Sensor data generated by things that are onboarded on the
platform are stored in a multi-component, high-performance
database system built around SAP HANA, SAP's in-memory
database

Time series analysis Thing sensor data can be clustered and analyzed based on
individually defined timeframes as a basis for trend observa
tions, predictive maintenance scenarios, or similar use
cases.

Location management Allows the definition of one-dimensional or two-dimensional

geographic objects (point of interest, area of interest).
Things can be enriched with geographic data and events can
be triggered when a thing arrives at, or leaves from, a partic
ular location.

SAP Analytics Cloud Integration In SAP IoT, you can gain insights about the time series data
recorded by sensors with the help of graphics and visualiza
tions provided by SAP Analytics Cloud.

Smart Sensing A suite of apps closely integrated with SAP S/4HANA and
SAP S/4HANA Cloud that let you capture events as objects
that are identifiable with Auto-ID technology tags move
through gates or scanners to automate business processes
in manufacturing and logistics.
