4. Find the solution of the differential equation 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 𝑦ln𝑥, where 𝑥 > 0 and 𝑦 > 0, which
satisfies the condition 𝑦 = 1 when 𝑥 = 1. [7]

8. The rate of change of percentage for the population of the black beetles with respect to time, 𝑡, is
given by
dy
= 𝑘(2 − 3𝑦 + 𝑦 )
dx
where 𝑦 is the percentage of the population of the black beetles. Initially, 50% of the population is
black beetles. Research shows that in the fourth year, the population of the black beetles increases
to 80%.
(a) Find the value of 𝑘. [8]
Hence, obtain a relationship between 𝑦 and 𝑡. [2]
(b) Determine the percentage of the black beetles in the 10 year. [3]
(c) Will the population of the black beetles reach 100%? Give your reason. [2]

4. Find the particular solution of the differential equation − = 𝑥 − 1 which satisfies the
condition of 𝑦 = 1 when 𝑥 = 0. [8]

8. Molecule 𝑃 changes continuously to molecule 𝑄 during a chemical reaction at high temperature

and pressure in a chamber. At the beginning of the reaction, the numbers of molecule 𝑃 and
molecule 𝑄 are 𝑝 and 𝑞 respectively. Throughout the reaction, the total number of molecues 𝑃 and
𝑄 remains unchanged. At any time, 𝑡, in seconds, the rate of the molecule 𝑄 produced is directly
proportional to the product of the number of molecule 𝑃 and the number of molecule 𝑄. Given that
𝑥 is the number of molecule 𝑄 that has been produced at time 𝑡.
𝑑𝑥
(a) Show that 𝑥 satisfies the differential equation = 𝑘(𝑝 − 𝑥)(𝑞 + 𝑥), where 𝑘 is a constant.
𝑑𝑡
[2]
(b) Express 𝑥 in terms of 𝑘, 𝑝, 𝑞 and 𝑡. [9]
(c) Determine the limiting value for 𝑥. [2]
(d) Sketch the graph of 𝑥 against 𝑡. [2]
