Surah al-Fatiha is a Pillar of the Prayer

The Messenger of Allah (salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: If anyone observes prayer in which
he does not recite Umm al-Qur’an, It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete.

It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly,
for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) declare that Allah the
Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and
My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of
the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant)
says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded
Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of Judgement, He remarks: My servant
has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And
when he (the worshipper) says: It is You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help, He
(Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.
Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, The path of those upon
whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who
are astray., He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.

[Narrated in Sahih Muslim]

A cure of the body and the heart

Some of the Companions of the Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) came across a tribe
amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in
that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to
the companions of the Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam)), “Have you got any medicine with
you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?” The Prophet’s Companions said, “You refuse to
entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it.” So they agreed to pay
them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet’s companions) started reciting Surah al-
Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and
his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, “We will not take it unless we ask the
Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) (whether it is lawful).” When they asked him, he smiled
and said, “How do you know that Surah al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign
a share for me.”
