Encourage students to think about the letters and how they can form familiar sports-related words.
Provide assistance or hints if students struggle with any particular word.
After completing the task, review the answers together to reinforce correct spelling and understanding of sports
vocabulary.

Point out the difference between ‘football’ (British English)/‘soccer’ (US English) and ‘American football’ (also
known as ‘football’ in the States.)

You can pair up students for this exercise. More than one answer is possible for some of the sentences. Compare
answers among the class, go through the words in bold and elicit further answers. In Part B, students match the
vocabulary to the correct definitions.

Monitor the discussions, providing assistance or clarification if needed.
After the activity, conduct brief feedback to discuss any interesting points that arose during the conversations.
Variations: For larger classes, consider having students rotate partners halfway through the activity to maximise
interaction.
