Building a boat
13-year-old Diego Perez talks about building a boat with plastic bottles. Diego Perez lives in a small
village in southern Mexico. Last summer, after a big storm, he went for a walk by the sea and saw plastic
bottles everywhere. That night, he dreamt of a way to make a boat with the plastic bottles. In the
morning, he drew a plan of the boat and took his drawing to show his teacher.
Diego needed some help to build his boat. So, his friends helped him collect three hundred empty
bottles at the seaside. Diego couldn’t believe it only took them a few hours to find everything he
needed to build the boat. After he washed and dried the bottles, he used a very strong glue to join them
together.
When Diego first went in his boat, he was worried how safe it would be. But it sailed without any
problems. While Diego was sailing, his mum took a photo and shared it with her friends. A few days
later, a journalist saw it on social media and contacted Diego’s family to invite him to go on a popular
talk show. That’s when the whole country learnt about his boat – an experience Diego will never forget.
Diego decided to start a boatmaking club with students from his school. The boats they make are for
local people to borrow to go fishing. This is how they are able to earn money for their families. Now
Diego’s village has more jobs, the beach is much cleaner, and tourism is growing in the area.

Scarlett Harrison’s video game New Earth
Scarlett has always been brilliant at playing video games, but she often thought they were boring.
When she was 9, she started learning to write computer programs. Her idea was to invent a video
game that she’d really enjoy. At 11, Scarlett finished her game and called it New Earth. She is
surprised that over fifty thousand people have bought it and she’s now very well known. The
game has also made her really rich.
New Earth is a video game where players try to help the planet. They play in teams to find answers
to difficult problems such as making sure every country has excellent schools, clean drinking
water and enough food.
When Scarlett was learning how to make New Earth, she didn’t need anyone’s help. She used the
instructions on Funity, a website which teaches young people how to build video games. It also
allows children to upload their games onto its website. Millions of Funity members come together
to play these games in online clubs all around the world.
Scarlett receives many messages from fans, and she reads them all. They sometimes suggest
brilliant ways to improve New Earth – which is just great! But sadly she doesn’t always have time
to write replies.
Scarlett wants to build more video games, but she isn’t ready to do that yet. This July, she’s
showing children the easiest way to make their own video games at a summer camp. And when
she’s old enough, she wants to study computer science at college.

3. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
Every year, a large number of Siberian cranes come to the bird sanctuary at Bharatpur. Year
after year, at the beginning of winter these birds cover thousands of miles from Siberia
in the north of Russia to come to Bharatpur and then, as winter ends, they once again
return to their original habitat, without making any mistake in the direction they have to
take in their long flights. It is surprising how these birds find their way over such long
distances, especially when vast stretches of land happen to be covered with clouds so that
familiar landmarks, which could have guided them, are not even visible. The same
phenomenon has been observed in other parts of the world as well. By way of experiment,
light metal rings with specific information are put on the legs of some migratory birds, and
it is observed that they keep returning to the winter sanctuary year after year without fail.
Pigeons are well known for finding their way back home in spite of all odds.
At one time, it was believed that they could find their way with the help of familiar
landmarks which they had seen and remembered. In an experiment, some pigeons were
carried to a considerable distance in cages covered with black cloth so that they could not
see anything on the way. However, when they were released, they still managed to come
back to the place from where they had been taken away in covered cages. To check whether
the pigeons remembered the direction of movement even when they could not see
2
anything, another experiment was undertaken. To confuse their sense of direction, some
pigeons were carried in an airplane and then released. Many of them still managed to return
home on their own.
3.1. Answer the following questions.
i. When do the Siberian cranes come to the Bharatpur sanctuary?
ii. What is their original habitat and when do they return there?

There goes the alarm again. I guess I should g et up, but I am dreading this day. I always hate
going back to school after a holiday break. I am not sure why? I am anxious to see my friends, I
don't have any overdue school assignments, but I still get that funny feeling in the pit of my
stomach. Has something changed? Do all my friends still feel the same way? What clothes
should I wear today? Everyone will wear something new, I am sure of that.
My biggest conflict is in my head. Part of me says, "Be your own person!" Another part of me
just wants to fit into the crowd. My mom says that high school is like this, but college will be the
opposite. She says I'll meet many people with different interests, and find groups that I want to
be with. I am looking forward to that freedom, but I have one more year of high school and this
is my reality right now.
As much as my friends and I like to think we are above all the peer pressures and social "rules" of
our school, we all know we are very much controlled by it. We wear our hair the same way,
wear the same brand o f clothes, and even have to use the same perfume. We basically clone
ourselves because we don't want to be different. Yet, deep down we would like to shout, "Look
at me! This is who I am!" Sigh, there goes the alarm again. What should I wear today?

Reading Skills
Q.1. Read the following passage carefully: 10
1. Books are companions for people of all age groups. E-books vs. printed
books are like comparing joint and nuclear family systems. Both have their
advantages and disadvantages. E-books are cost-effective and books of all
genres can be easily accessed from the internet. Font flexibility makes
reading easier, uncountable books can be stored in a single device and most
importantly it can help save trees. Packing for trips is hard enough, but it
gets doubled when faced with the task of choosing which book to carry. The
device takes a whole lot of weight off from shoulders literally. With the e-
book, a reader can take hundreds of books with him on the journey, and only
take up a few square inches in his carry bag.
2. Reading a printed book can save you from the health hazards of using hi-
tech gadgets. For people who consider reading a book as worship, the scent
of its pages intoxicates their senses. The pleasure of reading a printed book
and scribbling comments on the sides of the pages is unmatched. Printed
books are not merely about reading, they are an experience. The joy of
flipping pages and keeping bookmarks cannot be experienced in an e-book.
Constantly reading on the computer screen or a mobile phone can damage
the eyes. Apart from physical considerations, studies have shown that
printed books are still a better choice when it comes to reading
comprehension. Literacy building in children is more effective with printed
books than with an e-book because of the opportunities for interaction
between the child and the parent, reading the book with the child. In fact,
in e-books, there is no conversation and nothing to encourage the child to
verbalise or explore using language. The research concluded that 'click
through' added features can detract from the reading experience because
of all the interruptions.
3. This is not to say e-books do not have advantages. It can effectively serve
the purpose of convenience and portability. The excitement generated
around technologies such as Amazon's Kindle has changed from page to
screen. Both versions complement each other based on why and where
each is being used.

Reading Skills
Q1. Read the following passage carefully: 10
The Incredible Machine
1.Everyone has a favourite attraction at an amusement park, and I am
no different. However, unlike most people who seem to prefer
rollercoasters, my favourite ride is a little gentler. Every time I go to
Coney Island, Navy Pier, or the Santa Monica Pier, I absolutely have to
ride the Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel is simple and yet also quite
complex. That is, riding it is easy, but how it works is complicated. A
series of carts are attached to a wheel, which is attached to a rim. That
rim rotates vertically around an axis, and gravity keeps the carts
upright. As simple as the ride seems, only advanced engineers can
make safe and fun Ferris wheels.
2.While the Ferris wheel is not as thrilling as a rollercoaster, it is still
very exciting. The fact of being high in the air makes it so much more
entertaining than a lot of rides. I mean, how often do you hang from
that high up in daily life? Nevertheless, I have to admit, I don’t seek
Ferris wheels out because of their excitement. Rather, I find them very
relaxing. At the top of the Ferris wheel, you get beautiful sights of the
park. You also get a sense of calm that you don’t get in the hustle and
bustle of the park below. Additionally, Ferris wheels are also gorgeous
to look at when they are lit up at night. In fact, the original Ferris wheel
was designed as much to be seen as to be ridden.
3.The first Ferris wheel was made by and named after George
Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. He designed it for the Chicago World’s Fair
in 1893. It was the tallest attraction there, standing 264 feet high.
However, visitors to the fair were impressed by the size of the ride as
well as the mechanics of it. In 1893, anything that was not turned by
hand was considered a sight to see. And the wheel, which was a
machine, was truly incredible to see. Further, as one visitor put it, the
wheel was amazing because it seemed to be missing support. That is,
it did not look like it could stand on its own. And yet it did and even
rotated!
4.Ferris wheel technology has only improved since then. Most of
today’s Ferris wheels are much larger than that first one. The largest
in the world is the "Singapore Flyer," which stands slightly taller than
twice what Ferris’s did! Today, the Ferris wheel is the most common
amusement park ride. But that does not mean you should take them
for granted. Instead, be thankful for Ferris’ invention. The next time
you’re at an amusement park, don’t just look up at the impressive
wheel in the sky on your way to a newer attraction. Take it for a spin!
