roads that carry away waste water and other, much dirtier things! His job is to keep the sewers clear. 'We
work in teams of six,' says Jeff. 'It's very dirty work. And of course we work in the dark.' He has to wear
special clothes, a mask and a helmet with a light. 'The most difficult thing is clearing the fat and oil from
the sewers under the Chinese and Indian restaurants,' he says.
Many people like to work outdoors, but few would like Charlie Radley's job. Charlie lives in Alaska
and works on a fishing boat. Each fishing trip lasts about a week. 'It's extremely cold and often stormy,'
says Charlie, 'so we wear warm, waterproof clothes.' Charlie can earn a lot of money if they catch a lot of
fish, but if they don't, he earns very little. 'I'll do this job for a year or two more,' says Charlie, 'then I'm
going to look for another job - something warmer and drier!'

As a language student, you have probably used artificial intelligence in numerous ways. However, you
have probably felt the limitations of relying solely on technology for feedback on your progress,
particularly when it comes to the productive skills of speaking and writing. How far can a computer help
you with those?
If you are studying English in a class with a teacher, the chances are you have been asked to give a
presentation to the rest of the class. It is also likely that the presentations you have given have been
followed by feedback. Perhaps your classmates did not want you to feel bad, so they said you were
amazing. However, you may have felt that the feedback was either inaccurate or too subjective. What if
there were a computer programme that could give you a completely objective reaction to your
presentation?
Extensive research has helped us understand the ways in which speakers can influence an audience's
reaction to them. These include the content of our talk, our body language and how we use our words and
voices. Machines can now be trained to measure these factors and give us objective feedback to help us
improve our communication skills.
Some exam boards have already started to use artificial intelligence to mark students' written work.
Some studies have shown this to be more accurate than human marking because it eliminates human
failings such as tiredness and personal preferences.
Although performing tasks with the use of artificial intelligence is faster, more cost effective and in
many ways more accurate, there are some limitations of artificial intelligence which seem impossible to
overcome. Artificial intelligence can definitely help teachers, but they can rest assured that their jobs are
safe for a few more years.

People have been communicating by letter for at least 2,000 years. Now, however, with the speed and
efficiency of digital media, the handwritten letter is in serious decline. But have we given enough
consideration to what we will lose if we abandon the letter completely?
When we handwrite a letter, we write more thoughtfully. When we receive an email, there is pressure
to respond instantly and we don't always think carefully about how to express our feelings, often choosing
to use emoticons instead. Writing letters may be hard work, but receiving one can be one of life's greatest
pleasures. There is so much to appreciate: the feel of the paper, the style of the handwriting and simply
knowing someone has taken the trouble to write to you.
Texts and emails allow instant communication but are quickly deleted, while letters stay around for
longer, allowing us to keep a record of our past. Many of us keep special letters written by older
generations. But what correspondence will we leave behind for future generations? Nothing. However,
there are signs that people have been writing more letters recently. Newspapers have reported a rise in
stationery sales and several internet campaigns have sprung up in an attempt to save the art of letter-
writing. So letter-writing may not be ready to die quite yet.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
In the days before the Internet, the word 'troll' had two different meanings. As a noun, 'a troll' was an
ugly, bad-tempered creature. As a verb, 'to troll' means to fish using a line pulled slowly behind a boat.
Perhaps it's easy to see why the word 'troll' has changed over time to describe anonymous individuals who
'fish' for victims by deliberately insulting and attacking people in online forums.
There are two main reasons for a troll's behaviour. The first is boredom. Trolls lack stimulation in
their everyday lives and so seek satisfaction by attempting to humiliate and harm others. As well as being
at a loose end, these people desire attention. They want people to react to them regardless of whether the
response is negative.
Dealing with online trolls requires self-control and thinking ahead. They are attention seekers, so by
engaging with them we are actually giving them exactly what they want. Instead, leave them starved of
attention. A more sensible approach is this: delete, block, report, move on.
Those who are suffering at the hands of trolls or because of online bullying can seek help in various
ways. The first place to turn for support might be friends and family. There are also support communities
which exist to help victims of online bullying and abuse from trolls. Victims should also remember that
any threats of violence made online are illegal and can be reported to Internet service providers, or the
police. Given the size of the online community and the anonymity that the Internet allows, it is unlikely
that the problem of trolls will ever disappear completely. For now perhaps the best we can do is starve
them of the attention they seek.

Umeå, in Sweden, is only 500 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, which means that from October to
February it only gets between 42 and 45 minutes of sunlight every day. And that's only if it isn't raining
when, depressingly, it may never get light at all.
But students at Dragonskolan, an upper secondary school in the city, are getting a lot more sunlight
than that this year, even if it is artificial sunlight. They are part of an experiment to discover if brightly
electric light can make a difference to students' well-being and performance. When we are exposed to
light in the morning, the brain takes it as a signal to stop producing melatonin, the hormone that makes
you want to sleep. If you don't get any light, the body delays producing the signal that it's time to wake
up. Over time, you basically get a kind of 'jet lag' where your body clock is not set correctly for the time
of day.
The hope is that by exposing students to a bright light all day, they will be less sleepy during the day,
and get a better rest at night. They should also be less likely to become depresseD. It will be interesting
to see the results.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
“The key to getting teenagers to respect you is to respect them first,” says Penny Palmano, who has
written a best-selling book on teenagers. “You can't continue to treat them the same way that you have
been treating them for the previous 12 years: they have opinions that count.”
Palmano, who has a daughter aged 19 and a 16-year-old stepdaughter, has even allowed the children
to hold several teenage parties at her home. They passed without problems. She agrees that teenagers can
be irritating: enjoying a world that is free of responsibility, yet desperate for independence.
She doesn't think, however, that they are trying to annoy you. Until recently, scientists assumed that
the brain finished growing at about the age of 13 and that teenage problems were a result of rising
hormones and a desire for independence. But it turns out that the region of the brain that controls common
sense and emotions is not fully mature until the early twenties. “This would explain why many teenagers
can't make good decisions, control their emotions, prioritise or concentrate on several different things at
the same time.” says Palmano.
The key to happiness for all, Palmano believes, is calm negotiation and compromise. If you want your
teenagers to be home by 11 pm, explain why, but listen to their counter-arguments. “It's vital to choose
your battles carefully: don't criticise teenagers for having an untidy room, then suddenly criticise them for
other things. On these occasions, parents tend to mention all the other things that they may or may not
have done wrong. One minute, it's about an untidy room and the next, you're saying, 'And another thing
...' and criticising them for everything.”

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
Some of Germany's biggest companies have brought in rules to protect their workers from being
disturbed by work email outside office hours. Firms such as the car manufacturers Volkswagen have
reacted to growing levels of employee stress and burnout by installing software to prevent emails from
reaching employees at home.
In France, workers have protested against the way that the use of electronic devices has been exposing
workers to much longer unpaid hours than the official thirty- five-hour working week. In response, the
government has recently introduced laws which insist on employers switching off email contact after 6
p.m.
But some employers and employees have criticised the new rules for not taking account of modern-
day flexible working practices. Many parents, for example, prefer to leave work early to pick up their
children and then check emails later in the evening. The fact that you can be contacted on email might
actually mean that a lot of people are able to leave the office earlier than they would have done ten or
fifteen years ago.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
When buying fresh fruit and vegetables, would you select a very curly cucumber, a carrot with two
'legs', or a potato with three heads? For many people, the answer is 'no' - they look for perfect produce
when they go to the supermarket.
Not anymore! In France, a large supermarket chain, Intermarché, has started a marketing campaign to
put ugly fruit and vegetables back on the shelves. And British TV chef Jamie Oliver has followed their
lead, together with a large UK supermarket. Both the French and British supermarkets are selling their
funny-shaped fruit and veg at a huge discount as an incentive for shoppers to opt for the less attractive
versions.
Over the years, supermarkets have trained their customers to expect perfect fruit and veg, with many
customers discarding produce that isn't 'perfect'. And until recently, there were numerous, very strict rules
for supermarkets about the size and shape of fresh produce. Fortunately, there are now fewer rules, but
customers need encouragement to change their shopping habits.
There is a good reason for this change in attitude. The rejection of misshapen produce results in a huge
amount of waste: around 20-40% of food is thrown away before it even reaches the shops. Yet at the same
time, we know that world food shortages are soon going to be a real and serious problem.
Fortunately, it looks like these brave, but common-sense supermarket campaigns are working. It seems
that these campaigns are going to be profitable, as well as environmentally friendly. Other supermarkets
have already experimented with the same idea, both within and outside Europe. So, next time, when you
go shopping, think before you buy. After all, it's the taste that counts.
