CENG 3152: STRUCTURAL DESIGN FOR ARCHITECTS-II

FALL 2022
PART I: STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

A. Chapter 1: Slabs

1.0 Figure (1) shows a typical floor plan composed of a residential building. Exterior
and interior walls thickness is 250 mm.
Using solid slab system, it is required to:
a. Illustrate using neat sketches load distribution in slabs.
b. Compute the appropriate slabs thickness.
c. Draw the statical system of the slab along a horizontal strip between axes 1~2
and along a vertical strip between axes B~C.
d. Sketch concrete dimensions and steel re-bars (without calculations) for the
horizontal strip between axes 1~2 and the vertical strip between axes B~C.

2.0 Figure (2) shows the floor plan of an office building with Live load intensity of 4
KN/m2. No projected beams were allowed except on axes D, G, 1 & 4 as shown.
Using Hollow block slab system, it is required to:

a. Compute slab thickness, block size and arrangement of a one-way hollow

block slab system enclosed between axes 1~4 and A~D. Draw the statical
system of ribs along a vertical strip between axes 1~2 showing the appropraite
arrangement of t h e steel re-bars (without calculations). Illustrate the concrete
dimensions of the slab along a vertical section between axes 1~2 and horizontal
section between axes B~C.
b. Illustrate the block size and arrangement if a two-way hollow block slab
system was used between axes 1~4 and A~D. Draw the statical system of ribs
along a vertical strip between axes 2~3 showing the appropriate arrangement of
the steel re-bars (without calculations).

3.0 For the floor plan shown in Fig (2), columns were not permitted in the area
enclosed between axes 4~7 and D~G. If the live load intensity is 4 KN/m2, flooring
intensity is 1.5 KN/m2 and columns along axes 4, 7, A & D are 250x600 mm, it is
required to:

a. Establish an appropriate paneled beams system for the floor enclosed between
axes 4~7 & D~G showing concrete dimensions of paneled beams, edge beams
and slabs.
b. Draw the statical system and sketch –w/o calculation- the steel reinforcement of
a vertical beam between axes 1~2 and edge beam on axis 1.
c. Illustrate the concrete dimensions along a horizontal section between axes F~G
and a vertical section between axes 1~2.

4.0 Figure 3 illustrates the structural plan of a typical industrial building floor
composed of flat slab with marginal beams 250x800mm. If the flooring load = 1.5
kN/m2 and equivalent wall load = 2.0 KN/m2 and floor height = 4.0 m, It is
required to:

a. Select an appropriate flat slab system (illustrating all dimensions on the

plan) if the live load = 5.0 KN/m2.
b. Select an appropriate flat slab system (illustrating all dimensions on the
plan) if the live load = 8.0 KN/m2.
c. Compute minimum column dimensions permitted by ECP 203.
d. Sketch (without calculations) the steel reinforcement required for a typical
vertical column and field strip.
e. Illustrate the concrete dimensions along a horizontal section passing
through axis 2 for the case of live load of 8 KN/m2
