Instruction/s:
1. Borrowing of calculator, pen, pencil, sharpener, correction tape/fluid, calculator etc. is strictly prohibited.
2. Detaching of pages or removing the staple of the examination paper will result in automatic 5.0.
3. Erasures are not allowed.
4. Provide complete and comprehensive solution to each problem in the space provided.
5. Use the back part of your test papers for your scratch solutions.
6. Avoid copying from your classmates. Let your work be the reflection of your knowledge in our subject.

Part I. Identification.

1.0000 or 100.00% 1. What is the total area under the standard normal distribution curve?
0.5000 or 50.00%, 0.5000 or 50.00% 2-3. What percentage of the area falls below the mean? Above the mean?
68%, 95%, 99.7% 4-6. About what percentage of the area under the normal distribution curve falls within 1 standard
deviation above and below the mean? 2 standard deviations? 3 standard deviations?
H0 (null hypothesis), H1 (alternative hypothesis) 7-8. What symbols are used to represent the null hypothesis and the
alternative hypothesis?
α (alpha) ,β (beta) 9-10. What symbols are used to represent the probabilities of type I and type II errors?

Part II. Find the area under the standard normal distribution curve and draw the graph. Show your solutions and write
your final answers on the space provided before the item number.

35.77% or 0.3577 11-12. Between z = 0 and z = 1.07

35.57% or 0.3557 13-14. To the right of z = 0.37

10.43% or 0.1043 15-16. Between z = 1.09 and z = 1.83

12.55% or 0.1255 17-18. Between z = 0 and z = −0.32

57.14% or 0.5714 19-20. To the right of z = −0.18

35.74% or 0.3574 21-22. To the right of z = 1.92 and to the left of z = −0.44
Part III. Find the z value that corresponds to the given area. Show your solutions (if needed) and write your final answers
on the space provided after the item number.

23. z = -1.26

26. z = 1.84

24. z = 1.98

27. z = -2.08

25. z = -1.39

Part IV. Using the z table (Table E), find the critical value (or values) for each.

-2.05 28. α = 0.02, left-tailed test

+2.58 and -2.58 29-30. α = 0.01, two-tailed test
-2.05 31. α = 0.02, right-tailed test

Part V. For each conjecture, state the null and alternative hypotheses.

32-33. The average age of first-year medical school students is at least 27 years.

H0: µ = 27 years
H1: µ ≥ 27 years

34-35. The average number of monthly visits/sessions on the Internet by a person at home has increased from 36 in 2009.

H0: µ = 36 visits
H1: µ > 36 visits

36-37. The average weight loss for a sample of people who exercise 30 minutes per day for 6 weeks is 8.2 pounds.

H0: µ = 8.2 pounds

H1: µ ≠ 8.2 pounds

Part VI. Find the critical value (or values) for the t test for each.

-2.718 38. n = 12, α = 0.01, left-tailed

2.228 39. n = 11, α = 0.025, right-tailed
+2.262 and -2.262 40-41. n = 10, α = 0.05, two-tailed

Part VII. Using Table F, find the P-value interval for each test value.

P > 0.10 42. t = −1.145, n = 5, left-tailed

P = 0.05 43-44. t = 2.179, n = 13, two-tailed
P > 0.10 45. t = 0.665, n = 10, right-tailed
Part VIII. Problem Solving. Show your solution and box your final answers.

46-50. For a certain group of individuals, the average heart rate is 72 beats per minute. Assume the variable is normally
distributed and the standard deviation is 3 beats per minute. If a subject is selected at random, find the probability that the
person has the following heart rate.

a. Between 68 and 74 beats per minute

b. Higher than 70 beats per minute
c. Less than 75 beats per minute

a. P = 0.6568 = 65.68%
b. P = 0.7486 = 74.86%
c. P = 0.8413 = 84.13%

51-55. A person read that the average number of hours an adult sleeps on Friday night to Saturday morning was 7.2 hours.
The researcher feels that college students do not sleep 7.2 hours on average. The researcher randomly selected 15 students
and found that on average they slept 8.3 hours. The standard deviation of the sample is 1.2 hours. At α = 0.05, is there
enough evidence to say that college students do not sleep 7.2 hours on average?

H0: µ = 7.2 hours

H1: µ ≠ 7.2 hours (two-tailed)
Critical Value/s: +1.96 and -1.96

X−μ 8.3−7.2
t= = =3.5502
s 1.2
√n √ 15
Degrees of freedom = n-1 = 15 – 1 = 14 (use t table to determine probability or P)

P < 0.01. Since value of P is less than 0.01 it is also less than 0.05. Reject the null hypothesis. There is enough
evidence to support the claim that college students do not sleep 7.2 hours on average.
