Circles
Objective

To illustrate a circle and the terms related to it: radius, diameter chord, center, arc, central
angle, and inscribed angle (M7GE-IIIg-1).

Learning Activity

Definition of Terms:
R
 A circle is the set of all points in a plane
at a given distance (radius) from a given
point (center) in the plane. Name of circle: ⨀ O
O P Diameter: TP
 A radius of a circle is a line segment from T Radii: ¿ , OP
T
the center to any point of the circle. Chords: TR , TP
 A chord of a circle is a line segment
whose endpoints lie on the circle.
D
 A diameter of a circle is a chord
containing the center. It is called the
longest chord.
 An arc of a circle is two points on the B C
circle and the continuous part of the circle A
between the two points. The two points
are called the endpoints of the arc. Arc
E
measure is found by measuring the
central angle. F

There are three (3) types of arcs:

semicircles, minor arc, and major arcs.
semicircles: ^
ADC , ^

AEC
 A semicircle is an arc of a circle whose DCF , ^
^
endpoints are points of the diameter.
DAF∨¿ ¿^ ¿
Semicircles are named using their endpoints and a
third point on the arc, which is placed in the middle.
 A minor arc is an arc of a circle that is
smaller than a semicircle. ^ ^,^
minor arcs: AD , ^
DC , CF FE , ^
EA , ^ ^
ED , CE
 A major arc is an arc of a circle that is ,^
FA
larger than a semicircle.
major arcs: ^
ADF or ^ DCE or ^
ACF , ^ DFE
 A central angle is the angle with its
vertex at the center of the circle and

360⁰ while that of a semicircle is 180⁰.
 An inscribed angle is the angle central angles: ∠ DBC , ∠CBF , ∠ FBA , ∠ ABD
Arc measure is found by measuring the central
subtended at a point on the circle by two
angle.

The inscribed angle θ is C
half of the central angle 2 θ

∠ C = 39 °
 A secant of a circle is a line that l
intersects the circle at two points. It R
contains a chord.
X Secant: ´
XY
 A tangent of a circle is a line lying on
the same plane as the circle that Tangent: line l
intersects the circle in exactly one point.
Point of tangency: R
The point where the tangent touches
the circle is called point of tangency.
