DRUG INFORMATION
Drug Classification: Psychostimulants / Nootropic Generic Name: Citicoline
Citicoline consumption promotes brain metabolism by restoring phospholipid content in the brain and
regulation of neuronal membrane excitability. It also influences the mitochondria or energy factories of the
brain cells and is found to improve memory function. After several clinical trials, Citicoline has been shown to
raise the amount of acetylcholine in the brain.
INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION
- Acute & recovery phase of cerebral infarction - Hypersensitivity
- Cerebral insufficiency

SIDE EFFECTS ADVERSE EFFECTS
- Fatigue - Bradycardia/tachycardia
- Dizziness - Hypotension
- Stomach ache
- Chest pains
Drug-Drug: Citicoline must not be administered with any drugs containing meclofenoxate. It must not also
be administered with centrophenoxine-containing medications.
Nursing Considerations:
- Note any allergic reactions caused by citicoline (e.g. hives, rashes, swelling, etc.)
- Administering citicoline in the afternoon could cause the patient difficulty in sleeping
- Closely monitor patient’s vital signs
Health Teaching:
- Report to physician immediately for any occurring abnormalities and side and/or adverse effects in
order to seek medical attention to further identify whether the patient shall continue to medication.
