LESSON DISCUSSION

All Things Connected

All of these things are possible in the computer because they are connected to the
internet. The internet has changed the way we communicate and deal; with our lives. It
involves not only us, our friends, or our relatives; it involves everyone in the whole world.
The Internet
The internet is defined as a global connection of
all computer networks. Our computer is connected to
all of the computers around the world. It is a physical
connection of networks, connecting a continent’s
network to another continent via undersea cables.
Via the internet, we can share lots of things.
These can range from a variety of information and
media such as pictures and videos. It is possible that
the video you are watching is from another country.
That is how global the internet is.
We can do a lot of things as so long as we connect to the internet, or in other words,
when we go online.
Did you know that internet is a connection made around the world? No on really
owns the internet. It is a collective endeavor.
Although, it has no central owner, it is carefully
designed and maintained by different corporations.
Internet vs. World Wide Web
A lot of people think that these two terms mean
the same, but they are not. The World Wide Web,
or Web for short is a collection of websites.
Websites are the way of accessing information. It is
made up of text and other forms of media. Websites
could be a news site, a social networking site, or educational sites. Only by connecting to the
internet we can access the World Wide Web.

Internet’s History
 1960s -ARPANET
The earliest form of internet started out as Advanced Research Projects Agency
Network (ARPANET). It comes from two (2) things: the name of the funding organization, the
US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), and NET, short for network.
Back then, the ARPANET was used to connect government research and development
sites.
 1975 -TCP/IP
There needed to be a protocol, a language or a way for the computers to “talk” to one
another. Because of this, computers were linked together using the Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
 1980s -College and universities using the internet
More colleges and universities have connected to the internet.
 1990s -Internet available to the public
The internet was made available to the public.
 1991 -Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee, a computer programmer from Switzerland, invented
the World Wide Web. The internet not only became a way to send files, but
with the World Wide Web, everyone was able to access the “web” of
information. Tim Berners-Lee
 Present -The Internet of Things (IoT)
All types of computers have access to the internet. Mobile phones, tablets, smartphones,
and smartwatches, and a lot of machines and appliances now connect to the internet. This is
known as the Internet of Things (IoT).

Connect to the Internet

Now that we have a computer, it is time to connect your computer to the in internet.
Before doing that, you need to follow these steps:
1. Know what type of internet service connection we want.
Below are the common types of internet service connection to choose from:
Types of Internet Function
Service Connection
Dial-up  Cheapest but the slowest
 Already obsolete
 Uses phone line
 Cannot use the internet and the phone at the same time.
Broadband  Much faster connection than dial-up
 Has three (3) kinds:
1. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). It connects to the
internet via phone line without a need for landline.
2. Cable. It uses coaxial or copper cable to carry radio
signals, such as internet via cable TV. It supports high
bandwidth requirements.
3. Fiber. It is the fastest type of broadband since it uses
optical fibers to transmit data from one place to
another.
Mobile  Wireless
 Can be accessed through smartphones, tablets, laptops,
and other gadgets.
 Supports 3G (third generation) and 4G (fourth generation)
technology.
 Long-Term Evolution (LTE), a new wireless technology, is
popular nowadays.
2. Choose an internet service provider.
An internet service provider (ISP) is a company that sells internet access to its
subscribers. Most ISPs sell internet access by its speed in megabits or megabytes per
second.
In the Philippines, PLDT, Globe, and Skycable are known ISPs.
3. Get the needed hardware.
After purchasing the internet access, the ISP will provide us with our needed
hardware. The hardware needed are as follows:
- Modem. It is the main hardware that you need to connect to the internet. Modems differ
depending on the type of connection: dial-up, broadband, or cable.
- Router. It is a hardware device installed if you want a lot of computers and other
devices to be connected to your internet connection. Presently, a lot of modems have
built-in routers, which allows us to have a home wireless network, or a Wi-Fi network.
- Cables and wires. These vary depending on our internet connection, cables and wires
connecting our computer to our modem, and our modem to a phone or cable line.
Internet Makes Life Easy
A lot of tasks and errands now are done in the comfort of our homes. For instances,
we can shop and pay for our items online. We can listen to our favorite music instantly. We
can also talk to our love ones abroad without having to write and mail letters.
Ultimately, the internet has helped us in making our lives more convenient. To
maximize the internet, let us take a look at some of the popular internet services today.
Web Browsers
With internet access, we need a software to access the World Wide Web – web
browser.
Here are the known web browsers today. She should note that Safari is the default
web browser for Apple products. Its Windows version was discontinued after 2012.

Microsoft Edge Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Safari

Parts of the Web Browser
Once we double click a web browser, we are redirected to a browser window such as
the one below. Microsoft Edge is used to visit Yahoo! Search web engine. Microsoft Edge is
the default web browser in Windows 10, replacing Internet Explorer 11. It has other features
or buttons (as seen on the right side of the address bar).
The interface will somewhat vary depending on the web browser that we are using.
1. Navigation buttons. These move us through recently visited websites on web pages.
2. Refresh button. It refreshes the page if it does not load correctly.
3. New Tab. It opens a new empty page on the same browser window where we can
also type new URL and open new links. This is called tabbed browsing. It helps us to
browse multiple pages without opening a lot of browser windows.
4. Address Bar. In here, we type the website’s unique address, which is called a
Uniform Resource Locator (URL).
5. Scroll bars. These help us go around the page in the browser window.
Online Research
The internet also helps us to look for information online through search engines.
Search engines allow us to look for information that we want. These are two (2) of the most
popular search engines today.
1. Google – is a misspelling of googol, which is derived from googolplex that refers to
10 to the power of 100.
2. Yahoo – stands for “Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle” or “Yet Another
Hierarchically Officious Oracle”.

Google Yahoo!

Email
Instead of traditional mail, the internet gives us the way to send mail
electronically or via email. Sending and receiving emails are free of charge. The
most common email services are Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.

Social Networking Sites

Social Networking Sites or social media are used to connect and build relationships
with our family, friends, and other people, whom we share the same common interests,
background, and the like. Here are some popular social media: Facebook, Instagram, and
Twitter.

Streaming Media
The internet makes listening to music and watching videos easy. Here are some
common streaming music and video services on the internet: Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube.
Online Shopping
Through the internet, we can buy and sell things online. Usually, joining an online
shopping website is free of charge. These websites ask for a commission from a sale that
we make. They may also ask for shipping fees when we buy from their online store. Here are
the most common online shopping websites today: Amazon, Ebay, Lazada, and Shopee.

Responsible, Community-Builders
“Through the internet, we connect with different computers around the world.
Unavoidably, we also connect with other people. We then experience a sense
of community in the virtual world. We share the same interest online that is why
we want to remain connected. We should always remember that we do not just connect with
devices but with people as well. We should always show gratitude, kindness, and respect to
other people when connected.”
Based from the statement quoted above, write your reflection below.
