This hints the fundamental processes that could lead to the birth of habitable worlds. These
discoveries build upon previous observations by Webb, which had already uncovered diverse
ices within the cold, dark recesses of molecular clouds (with complex organic substances).
Simpler molecules, including formic acid, methane, formaldehyde, and sulfur dioxide, were
also detected. Notably, sulfur dioxide and other sulfur-containing compounds are believed to
have played a crucial role in driving metabolic reactions on primitive Earth, further
underscoring the significance of these findings.
Researchers have issued a warning about the dangers of plastic pollution after discovering a
higher risk of stroke and heart attack with plastic particles in the blood vessels. It was found
that more than half of the fatty plaques removed from patients’ blood vessels were
contaminated with tiny particles of plastic like polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Further research is needed to confirm the role of plastic pollution in cardiovascular diseases,
but scientists highlight the need for greater attention to the impact of microplastics and nano
plastics on human health.
The average global sea surface temperature soared to an unprecedented high of 21.06 degrees
Celsius in February 2024. There is a continuous trend of escalating ocean temperatures. It’s
record-breaking warmth for the ninth consecutive month. Marine biologists are sounding the
alarm over what appears to be the onset of the fourth global mass coral bleaching event in the
Southern Hemisphere, potentially the most devastating one yet. The current spike in ocean
temperatures is attributed to a combination of the El Nino phenomenon, which introduces
warmer surface waters in the Eastern Pacific, and the relentless climb of greenhouse gas
emissions fueling climate change. Antarctic sea ice reached its third lowest extent on record in
February, falling 28% below the average and signaling distress in polar ecosystems as well.
NO WATER CRISIS IN BENGALURU, SAYS KARNATAKA DEPUTY CHIEF
MINISTER:
“As far as Bengaluru goes, there is no water crisis. Around 7,000 borewells have dried up. We
have made arrangements for all that,” said DK Shivakumar. Due to the water crisis, the
Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board had banned the use of drinking water for car
washing, gardening, construction, and maintenance. The Mekedatu multi-purpose (drinking
and power) project involves building a balancing reservoir near Kanakapura in Ramanagara
district. The estimated Rs 9,000-crore project, once completed, is aimed at ensuring drinking
water to Bengaluru and neighbouring areas, and it can also generate 400 MW of power.
