Things started to go wrongly as soon as we got to the hotel. We were all completely exhausting after our long
journey and looking forward to a shower and a rest. However, we found that our room was not ready, which was very
annoyed, although the manager was extremely apologizing. While we were waiting, we asked about the excursions to
places of an interest which we have read about in the brochure. Imagine how we felt when we were told they had all
been cancelled! Apparently, the person responsible of organizing them had left suddenly and had not been replaced.
Then Sally saw a notice pinning to the door of the restaurant, said it was closed for redecoration, and Peter discovered
that the swimming pool was empty. When we eventually got to our room we were horrified to find that it was at the back
of the hotel, and we had a view of a car park, that seemed to be used as a rubbish dump. We seriously began to
wonder whether or not to stay.

PART TWO: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and mark letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 11
to 15. (5 pts)
A survey is a study, generally in the form of an interview or a questionnaire, which provides information concerning how
people think and act. In the United States, the best-known surveys are the Gallup poll and the Harris poll. As anyone
who watches the news during presidential campaigns knows, these polls have become an important part of political life
in the United States.
North Americans are familiar with the many “person on the street” interviews on local television news shows. While such
interviews can be highly entertaining, they are not necessarily an accurate indication of public opinion. First, they reflect
the opinions of only the people who appear at a certain location. Thus, such samples can be biased in favor of
commuters, middle-class shoppers, or factory workers, depending on which area the newspeople select. Second,
television interviews tend to attract outgoing people who are willing to appear on air, while they frighten away others who
may feel intimidated by a camera. A survey must be based on a precise, representative sampling if it is to genuinely
reflect a broad range of the population.
In preparing to conduct a survey, sociologists must exercise great care in the wording of questions. An effective survey
must be simple and clear enough for people to understand. It must also be specific enough so that there are no
problems in interpreting the results. Even questions that are less structured must be carefully phrased in order to elicit
the type of information desired. Surveys can be indispensable sources of information, but only if the sampling is done
properly, and the questions are worded accurately.
There are two main forms of surveys: the interview and the questionnaire. Each of these forms of survey research has
its advantages. An interviewer can obtain a high response rate because most people find it more difficult to turn down a
personal request for an interview than to throw away a written questionnaire. In addition, an interviewer can go beyond
written questions and probe for a subject’s underlying feelings and reasons. However, questionnaires have the
advantage of being cheaper and more consistent.
11. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. are easier to interpret B. cost less
C. minimize the influence of the researcher D. can produce more information
14. According to paragraph 3, which of the following is most important for an effective survey?
A. A high number of respondents

C. A sociologist who is able to interpret the results
D. Carefully worded questions
15. The word “elicit” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. rule out B. bring out C. take out D. leave out
Read the following passage and mark letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 16
to 25. (10 pts)
Composers today use a wider variety of sounds than ever before, including many that were once considered undesirable
noises. Composer Edgard Varese (1883-1965) called thus the "liberation of sound...the right to make music with any and
all sounds." Electronic music, for example – made with the aid of computers, synthesizers, and electronic instruments –
may include sounds that in the past would not have been considered musical. Environmental sounds, such as thunder,
and electronically generated hisses and blips can be recorded, manipulated, and then incorporated into a musical
composition. But composers also draw novel sounds from voices and nonelectronic instruments. Singers may be asked
to scream, laugh, groan, sneeze, or to sing phonetic sounds rather than words. Wind and string players may lap or
scrape their instruments.
A brass or woodwind player may hum while playing, to produce two pitches at once; a pianist may reach inside the piano
to pluck a string and then run a metal blade along it. In the music of the Western world, the greatest expansion and
experimentation have involved percussion instruments, which outnumber strings and winds in many recent
compositions. Traditional percussion instruments are struck with new types of beaters; and instruments that used to be
couriered unconventional in Western music – tom-toms, bongos, slapsticks, maracas – are widely used.
In the search for novel sounds, increased use has been made in Western music of Microtones. Non-Western music
typically divides and interval between two pitches more finely than Western music does, thereby producing a greter
number of distinct tones, or micro tones, within the same interval. Composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki create
sound that borders on electronic noise through tone clusters – closely spaced tones played together and heard as a
mass, block, or band of sound. The directional aspect of sound has taken on new importance as well Loudspeakers or
groups of instruments may be placed at opposite ends of the stage, in the balcony, or at the back and sides of the
auditorium. Because standard music notation makes no provision for many of these innovations, recent music scores
may contain graphlike diagrams, new note shapes and symbols, and novel ways of arranging notation on the page.
16. What does the passage mainly discuss?
