Drug Abuse and Addiction

Introduction

Drug abuse and addiction are critical issues that affect individuals, families, and society as a
whole. In the Philippines, the problem has reached alarming levels, prompting various responses
from the government and other stakeholders.
What is drug abuse?
Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the misuse of substances, such as using illegal
drugs or using prescription drugs in a way not intended by the prescribing doctor. It is the use of a
drug in amounts or by methods that are harmful to the individual.
What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction or substance use disorder is a relapsing disorder characterized by
compulsive drug seeking, continued used despite harmful consequences, and long-lasting
changes in the brain. Drug addiction marked by an uncontrollable craving and compulsive use,
leading to significant impairment and distress. It is a dependence on a substance even if you know
that it causes you harm. Drug addiction affects a person’s brain and behavior and leads to an
inability to control the use of drugs.

Causes of Drug Abuse and Addiction

1. Socioeconomic Factors

*Poverty:

poverty.
*Unemployment:
-Lack of job opportunities can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression, which
may drive people to substance abuse.

2. Psychological Factors

drug use as a form of self-medication.

*Peer Pressure:

drug use.

3. Environmental Factors

- Dysfunctional family dynamics, including domestic violence and parental neglect,
can contribute to substance abuse.

-Living in areas with high drug availability and usage can increase the likelihood of
individuals trying drugs.

breakdowns in relationships, and loss of trust.

*Financial Burden:
-Families often face financial difficulties due to the costs associated with supporting a
member with a drug addiction and potential loss of income.

*Child Neglect and Abuse:

-Children in families affected by drug abuse are at higher risk of neglect, abuse, and
developmental issues.

2. Societal Impact

*Crime Rates:
-Drug addiction is closely linked to increased crime rates, including theft, violence, and
other illegal activities to support drug habits.

*Healthcare Costs:
-The healthcare system faces a heavy burden from treating drug-related illnesses and
injuries.

and development.

Government Actions Against Drug Abuse and Addiction

1. Law Enforcement

*War on Drugs:
-Initiated by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2016, the Philippine government's
aggressive anti-drug campaign aimed to eliminate illegal drug use through police operations,
resulting in numerous arrests and controversial extrajudicial killings.
*Anti-Drug Laws:
-Enforcement of existing laws such as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act
of 2002 (Republic Act No. 9165), which imposes severe penalties on drug trafficking and use.

2.Rehabilitation Programs

*Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers:

-The government operates several rehabilitation centers providing treatment and support
for recovering drug users.

*Community-Based Rehabilitation:
-Programs that focus on integrating drug users back into society through community
support and vocational training.

3. Prevention and Education

*Awareness Campaigns:
-Initiatives to educate the public, especially youths, about the dangers of drug use
through school programs such as Barkada Kontra Druga (BKD), media campaigns, and
community outreach.

*Collaboration with NGOs:

-Partnership with non-governmental organizations to enhance efforts in drug prevention
and rehabilitation.

4. Legislative Measures

*Enhancing Laws:
-Continuous efforts to strengthen anti-drug legislation to address loopholes and adapt to
new challenges in drug trafficking and use.

*International Cooperation:
-Working with international bodies to combat drug trafficking and enhance cross-border
enforcement measures.

Conclusion
Drug abuse and addiction pose significant challenges, affecting individuals, families, and
society at large. The government's multifaceted approach includes law enforcement, rehabilitation
programs, preventive education, and legislative measures. However, balancing aggressive drug
policies with human rights considerations remains a critical issue.
