PERFORMANCE TASK #1
GOAL Your goal is to demonstrate your understanding of set operations (union, intersection, and difference) by creating a detailed and visually engaging
poster that illustrates these concepts using real-world examples
ROLE You are a data analyst tasked with creating educational materials for a middle school math class. Your job is to design a poster that effectively
communicates the concepts of union, intersection, and difference of sets
AUDIENCE Your primary audience is middle school students who are learning about set theory. Secondary audiences include your teacher and classmates who
will provide feedback on your poster.
SITUATION You have been asked by the school to develop a set of materials to help students grasp fundamental set operations. Your poster will be displayed in
the classroom and used as a reference for students learning these concepts. The goal is to make the concepts clear and relatable by using real-life
examples
PRODUCT A visually appealing poster that includes:
Venn Diagrams: Draw and label Venn diagrams to represent two sets and their union, intersection, and difference.
Examples: Use real-world examples for each set operation. For instance, “Students who play soccer” and “Students
who play basketball” can be used to illustrate the operations.
Explanations: Provide brief explanations of each set operation (union, intersection, and difference).
Reflection: A short section reflecting on how the Venn diagrams help in understanding the set operations.
STANDARDS Your poster will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Understanding of Concepts: Clearly and accurately illustrates union, intersection, and difference of sets with real-world examples
Visual Presentation: Poster is visually appealing, well-organized, and creatively designed; uses colors and images effectively
Real-World Examples: Provides several relevant and clear real-world examples for union, intersection, and difference
Effort and Completeness: Poster demonstrates exceptional effort and is fully complete with all required elements

PERFORMANCE TASK #2
GOAL Your goal is to efficiently organize a community event by categorizing volunteers based on their skills and availability, using set theory concepts to ensure the best allocation of
resources.
ROLE You are a member of the event planning committee responsible for organizing the volunteer workforce
AUDIENCE Your fellow committee members and the community members who will benefit from the event.
SITUATION The community event is approaching, and you need to ensure that volunteers are assigned to roles that best fit their skills and availability. You have been provided with data on
volunteers' skills and their availability, and you must use this data to make strategic decisions.
PRODUCT Venn Diagram: Create a Venn Diagram to represent the sets of volunteers with different skills and availability.
Analysis Report: Write a report answering the following questions:
1. How many volunteers have skills in both Event Planning and Public Relations?
2. How many volunteers are available on weekends but do not have skills in Event Planning?
3. What is the total number of volunteers in all three categories?
Volunteer Allocation Plan: Based on your analysis, propose a plan for assigning volunteers to different tasks at the event. Provide a brief justification for your decisions,
explaining how your plan optimizes the use of available volunteers.
STANDARDS Mathematical Accuracy: Venn Diagram is completely accurate, reflecting all data provided. Intersections and unions of sets are clearly and correctly shown.
Correctly and consistently.
Analytical Skills: All answers to questions are correct, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of set operations (intersections, unions, and differences).
Practical Application: Volunteer allocation plan is highly logical and feasible. Justification is clear, detailed, and strongly supported by set analysis.
Clarity and Presentation: Report and Venn Diagram are exceptionally well-organized and clearly presented, making analysis and plan easy to understand.
