Let’s answer
these simple
questions first Where do these objects in the sky come
from?

What is the difference between daytime

and nighttime?
The Sun, its planets and all the objects
moving around then collectively are
called Solar System.

received from Sun
Earth is not the only planet in space. There are also other planets
present. The Earth is part of the solar system.

The solar system includes the Sun and the eight planets: Mercury,
Venus, earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

The Sun is a star that is at the centre of the solar system that does not
move. The eight planets in the solar system revolve around the Sun in
their own elliptical paths.
What is the importance of light
in our lives?

Where do sunlight and heat
come from?
The Sun is the Earth’s natural
source of light and heat.

The Moon and the planets in the Solar
System do not give off light. They appear
bright because they reflect light from the
Sun.
It is the source of all energy for life on

On the Sun’s surface, there are dark
patches known as sunspots. These are
patches of gas that looks dark since they
are cooler than their surroundings.
Planet word comes from Greek, which means wandering star.

Planets are heavenly bodies, which revolve around the Sun in

elliptical orbits.

Earlier it was considered there were 9 planets in solar System but

Planets lately one planet called Pluto was de-classified from being a planet.

All planets fall in groups

Inner Planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars and Earth are called inner
planets.

Outer Planets: These are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Between Inner and Outer Planets,
there is a ring of small bodies,
which are made up of rock and
metal, these are called ASTEROIDS.
The Sun and
the Planets
They also keep moving around the
Sun. This ring is also called
ASTEROIDS BELT.
A satellite is an object in space that revolves around object.

The planets’ natural satellites are also known as their MOONs.

Some planets have more than one moon.

Satellite- The Moon is the Earths only natural satellite.

Moon
The Moon is the second brightest object in the sky after the sun.

It does not give out its own light. It appears bright because it
reflects light from the Sun.

Neil Armstrong was the first man to land on Moon on 20, July,
1969.

• Stars only appear at night. • The stars are in the sky both day
and night because the Sun
makes our sky so bright that we

stars.
• Astronomers including ARISTOTLE, GALILEO GALILEI
Astromoners and NICOLAUS COPERNICUS have had a big influence
on our ideas about the space.
Aristotle

• In ancient times people believed that Earth was

flat.
• Greek philosopher, Aristotle believed that Earth
was a sphere.
• To support his theory he used observations of
lunar eclipses as evidence.
• During a Moon eclipse, the shadow of the Earth
would cast a curved shadow on the Moon. This
would not happen if the Earth had a flat edge.

Copernicus

• Copernicus, the Polish astronomer, has been

commonly referred to as the father of modern
astronomy.
• He was the first person to propose that the Earth
orbits the Sun.
• He also stated that the Sun was the center of the
solar system.
Galileo Galilei

• Galileo was an Italian physicist, mathematician,

astronomer and philosopher.
• He made significant improvements to the
telescope and became the first astronomer to study
objects in space using a telescope.
• His observations supported Copernicus’ theory
about the Sun being at the center of the solar
system.
