Indeed, if it relates to that on which it is in our power (qudra) to have an influence (ta'tbin, it is practical wisdom; if it does not, [it is] theoretical [wisdom]. Practical [wisdom] either pertains to the single individual or it does not pertain to [him]. The one which pertains [to him] is the science of ethics, As for the one which does not pertain {to him], if it only considers the association of the inhabitants of the house, it is the science of the governance (tadbir) of the household; if it does not, it is [the science of] the governance of the city. Theoretical [wisdom] is either the science of that which is abstracted from corporeal matter in the two existences, [mental or external], or it is not. The first [type] is the superior science. It is also called “the universal science’, “the first philosophy’, “the science of metaphysics” and “the divine science”. As for the one which is not [abstracted from corporeal matter in the two existences, mental or external], if the abstraction of its object from {matter} is true in the mind (dbibn) only, it is the intermediary science and it is also called “the science of mathematics"; otherwise? it is the science of physics and it is also called “the inferior science”. ‘These are the fundamental parts (as) of wisdom.
