INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADJUSTING SYSTEM PRESSURE

Once the Scorpion has been connected to the rig's hydraulic system, the system pressure gauge will read what
pressure is present. This pressure can be adjusted for the Scorpion unit by following these steps.

Note: the system pressure should be set to about 200-300Psi higher than the required make-up
pressure. This is to avoid crushing the tool that is being worked on. If the tool slips when torque is
being applied, increase the system pressure to help with the gripping force.

l. Using the "system pressure adjustment" valve, release the lock not on the knob.
2. Rotate the knob clockwise to reduce the pressure or counter clockwise to increase the pressure.
3. Check the "system pressure" gauge as you make your adjustment.
4. Once you have reached the desired pressure, tighten the lock nut.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADJUSTING MAKE·UP PRESSURE

The make-up pressure is controlled independently from the break-out pressure, however the make-up pressure can
not exceed the system pressure. The system pressure should always be set 200-300Psi higher than the required
make-up pressure as determined by the torque formula.
To set the make-up pressure follow the steps below:

1. Use the torque formula to determine the required pressure.

2. Loosen the lock nut on the "makeup torque adjustment" valve.

Operational outline
l. Toe Scorpion is equipped with a Make-Up arm and a Back-Up arm.
• Toe Back-up arm is fixed and is used to attach the Scorpion to the tool as well as clamp the tool in
place so the joint can be made or broken.
• Toe Make-Up arm is the arm that "does the work". lt "Makes-Up" when it retracts and "Breaks-
Out" when extended.

2. The Make-Up arm is "Floated" and can swing in either diredion as well as forward and backward to allow
easy alignment with the tool when it is clamped in place by the Back-Up arm.

3. To achieve the best grip, the chain on each arm is tightened by using the chain cylinder. Toe rod of the
chain cylinder should be exposed no less than 112" and no more than 2" for optimal performance. lf the
rod is extended beyond 2", an additional link should be used on the chain. (see the chart on page 5 for
corred sizing)

4. Toe pressure of the chain cylinders is independent of the pressure for the Make-Up cylinder, thus ensuring
a better grip on the tool. The pressure on the Make-Up cylinder can be adjusted to achieve the desired
torque.

S. Although the spacing between the Back-Up arm and the Make-Up arm can be adjusted allowing for more
flexibility in tool síze and O.D., it is recommended for optimum performance and higher torque that this
spacing be kept as close as possible.

6. When using the Scorpion on tools smaller than the unit's capacity:

• Replace the chain links and the jaw sizes with the "Reducer Package".

• The Reducer Package consists of a frame and a jaw set. See chart for sizes.

SCORPION MODEL 2000 RST

INSTRUCTIONS fOR 0PERATION

l. Determine the corred number of links per chain required to run O.D. range. See the chart provided. To
add or remove links, follow the instrudions on page 8 in this service manual
2. For best results and proper operation, it is most important to maintain a secure grip on the tool. To ensure
the best grip:
• Make sure that the corred number of links are used in each chain for the tool O.D that is being worked on.
Refer to the chart provided on page S. Add or remove links if necessary, when changing tool O.D.

• Use the corred jaw size for the pipe O.D that is being worked on. See the chart on page 5 for sizing
seledion.

3. Wrap the Back-up arm's chain around the tool and tighten the chain cylinder. The cylinder rod will need to
be pulled in as muchas possible leaving not less than one-half inch (1/2'1 exposed.

¿;
HYDRAULIC CHAIN TONGS "'

4. If after tightening the chain, the rod is extended more than 2", an extra link will need to be added.
Visually inspect the contact between the tool to the jaw tong dies and the link tong dies.

5. To hook up the Make-Up arm, first wrap the Make-Up arm's chain around the tool and hook it up to the
chain cylinder with the pin tee.

6. Slightly tighten the chain by the lever on the control valve, and then check the tool position on the jaws
again. Make sure it fits into the jaw's tong dies.

7. When the fit is correct, tighten the chain completely by using the control valve.

10. It is recommended to work the arms as close as possible to each other. Each
of the arms carries a replacement jaw and the correct jaw O.O. size is very important to ensure proper use
of the unit.
NOTE:
For optimum performance and reduced wear on machine and drill pipe, the correct jaw size should always be used

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BREAKOUT [ MAKEUP 0PERATIONS

l. For Breakout or Makeup, operate the red lever on the control valve as marked.

2. Toe Make-Up arm will rotate to the desired direction and will Breakout or Makeup the joint, as needed.

3. During the operation, maintain good contact between the jaw and link dies and the tool at ali times.

4. If the tool moves away from the jaw, apply the pressure on the chain cylinder from the control valve and
re-adjust the tool position toward the jaw, when and if needed.

5. The same procedure is required for the horizontal or vertical position.

Reducer Package Installation

In arder to use the Scorpion on under sized tools - under 4" O.O. far the Scorpion 800 Series
and under 7" far the Scorpion 2000 Series - the reducer package must be installed and used
instead of the chains.

1. Remove the chain from the Make-Up arm by pulling out the pintee #A from the first link
(link with handle #B and the chain cylinder.

2. Remove the pin #A connecting the connecting link to the L link #4 by releasing the snap
ring from the pin and pushing the pin through the connecting link and L link

3. Remove the snap ring from the L link pin (reference 16) and push the pin through the L
link and arm.

digital gauge or a printer. This system will provide the most accurate torque readout
