NOTICE: I have retired from JJK and no longer have the time to continue updating and editing
the Glossary or Archives. It has been a pleasure contributing to the community the past several
years; my real life responsibilities and community have grown, and these are meaningful to me
now in a way they were not when I first joined the JJK community in 2019. Wishing all my
online friends the best. Godspeed and Soli Deo Gloria.

Did Gege Akutami say there would be three major arcs?
No, this alleged comment is a rumor, originating in a comment about "three big events"
made by Katayama, Gege's editor, and we have no confirmation on whether it is true.
From what I have been able to collect on 4chan message boards, at Jump Festa 2019, Gege's
editor Tatsuhiko Katayama said something along the lines of "JJK will have three big events"
(山場 yamaba). This gradually evolved into a rumor that Gege had said JJK would have three
major arcs. Katayama seems to have commented in an interview about the Light Novels that
Shibuya was the first of the three events, using the same phrasing (yamaba) as the alleged first
comment. There may very well be three major arcs, with Shibuya as #1 and the Culling Games
as #2, but the rumor itself is hearsay. (Thanks to Shiba for the source.)

Gege's infamous comment that either one of four main characters would die, or three of four. I

Q. 最終回に虎杖・伏黒・釘崎・五条の4人は生き残っていますか?

Sukuma's folklore origins include The Chronicles of Japan (Nihon Shoki) and The Folklore
Studies of Professor Munakata. See Munakata's manga here to explore possible connections.

Theories
Current Theories
Major or running theories which are currently circulating among fans.
Itadori Yuji
Here is a chart of all the current theories about Yuji’s origin/identity in the Chinese fandom.
Partially debunked as of Ch. 160, where it's fully confirmed that Kenjaku created Yuji
deliberately. Credit to Shiba for translating.
Jump to | Fanbook | Theories | Translation Notes | Light Novels | Locations Map | Literary Analysis
Yuji is the Last Finger
This theory posits that the 20th finger Sukuna stated Gojo had likely hidden is actually Yuji
himself, who was somehow host to or made into the last finger by Kenjaku at his conception.
Yuji Pregnancy Theory/Yuji is a Cursed Womb
The timeline which began when Yuji first ate Sukuna's finger suggests that Sukuna’s
rebirth/revival, which may happen when Yuji has consumed all 20 fingers, follows a pregnancy
format, with the expected ‘due date’ in March post-Shibuya.
● Brief English translation here (ARC) of the original theory (ARC) (JP)
● Yuji Pregnancy EN (credit to Blinx)
Yuji Has a Heavenly Restriction
It’s possible that since Yuji lacks a Cursed Technique but has inhuman levels of strength, he
may have a Heavenly Restriction like Maki and Toji, as Megumi notes in Ch. 1, and Yuta in Ch.
140. Kenjaku may have orchestrated this.

Yuji Will Learn Sukuna’s Cursed Technique/His Personality or Soul is Merging
With Sukuna's
Yuji’s appearance is becoming steadily more similar to Sukuna’s and he is picking up some of
his habits, such as slicking back his hair, beginning in Shibuya. This may be due to their souls
being in the same body, just as Kenjaku mentions he is becoming more like Getou in Ch. 134.
Gojo also mentioned in Ch. 12 that Yuji will eventually learn Sukuna’s Cursed Technique. Yuji's
temperament and speech also begin shifting in Shibuya in the Japanese--whether this is due to
his hatred for Mahito, or Sukuna's influence, or both, is unclear, but it was a major discussion
among Japanese fans when the chapter released because the change was so drastic.
Furthermore, in Ch. 139, Choso calls Yuji a 'demon god', the same kanji used by Gojo in Ch. 3 to
describe Sukuna.
When Sukuna takes Megumi's body and is chased by Yuji, he later looks down and sees
a tiny cut on his finger in Ch. 216. This cut may be from Yuji, who was "soaked/stepped" in
Sukuna's CE, learning to use Sukuna's slashing Technique.
● There are dozens of posts on this theory as it is so popular.

Yuji’s Memory Manipulation Technique/Curse/Charm
Partially debunked by Akutami in Feb. 2021 Interview
Current ideas involve the memory manipulation of Todo and Choso being Yuji’s secret Cursed
Technique, a curse from his grandpa who told him to die surrounded by people in Ch. 1, or
something of Kenjaku’s design. It also may have happened to Jogo during his fight with
Sukuna.

Ainu Tribe and the 4 Animal Spirits
‘Itadori’ is a name related to Ainu tribe lore of a legendary weapon which involves four animal
spirits--a wolf, a fox, and two dragons. The 'Ainu company' is also mentioned in Volume 0. In
Ch. 146 we learn that Hokkaido, in northern Japan where the Ainu live, is a region that will be
very conspicuously excluded from the Culling Game Barrier sweep planned by Kenjaku. We
can only speculate about the implications of these things; it's possible the Ainu hold some kind
of exclusive power or secret.
● Twitter thread

Ryomen Sukuna
Sukuna's origin, motives, and the full extent of his Cursed Technique are shrouded in
mystery.
Sukuna Can Store and/or Copy Cursed Techniques
In Sukuna’s fight with Jogo during the Shibuya Incident, he appears to copy Jogo’s fire
Technique or unseal a fire Technique from storage, possibly in his tattoos. See Chefkuna theory
below. He may store his collected Techniques in his 'Shrine' Technique mentioned in Ch. 217.

Sukuna's Bath
This lore-rich theory ties together Sukuna's inevitable return with multiple references in JJK to
Shinto bathing purification. The idea is that Sukuna will use the bath 浴 Uraume is preparing in
the Zen'in curse pit in Ch. 209, likely to activate "enchain" and separate himself from Yuji's body
or control, taking over.

Sukuna's Trishula, Vajra, and Cursed Technique
There are a number of theories surrounding Sukuna's weapons as seen in Ch. 117, which are
vajra and trishula, both relevant to Hinduism/Buddhism. Some theories speculate about
Sukuna's Cursed Technique 'Shrine' storing these weapons.

⚙ Chef Sukuna/Technique Cannibal Theory
Many of Sukuna’s Techniques and the language he uses to describe his Techniques relate to
cooking/butchering meat/other culinary terms, leading fans to believe his theme revolves
around cooking. This also relates to the possibility that he stores Techniques, as if they’re
ingredients he can use to ‘cook’, possibly by eating people and consuming their Techniques.
The fanbook at least confirmed that he is a cannibal and Uraume cooks for him. This may be
related to his plans for Megumi; it is possible he plans to eat him and take 10 Shadows when
Megumi is at his peak.

Conjoined Twins/Sous Chef Theory
This theory speculates about the source of Sukuna's seemingly numerous Techniques, drawing
from 2chan urban legends about conjoined twins and two-faced Sukuna, by which Gege
purportedly was inspired. See Sukuna lore section for details.
● Conjoined Twins/Sous Chef Theory - by sofi by sofi52
Sukuna is the Origin of/Cultivated the Proliferation of Cursed Techniques
There is evidence that suggests Sukuna, who predated the Three Great Families, may be the
originator of the Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan, and/or cultivated the environment for
powerful shamans and Techniques to proliferate during the Golden Age and beyond. As seen
in his apparent use of others' Cursed Techniques, one may speculate that Cursed Techniques
evolved from the rudimentary forms Sukuna seems to possess.

Identity & Ancestry
Several characters, including Kenjaku, Tengen, and Uraume, are allegedly hundreds or
thousands of years old, and their identity, origin, and ancestry are unknown.
Jump to | Fanbook | Theories | Translation Notes | Light Novels | Locations Map | Literary Analysis
Kenjaku is Based on/Related to Ashiya Doman or is a Member of the Ashiya
Clan
Kenjaku seems to be based on, and may be related to Ashiya Sadatsuna, the shaman who
created New Shadow Style: Simple Domain, due to the real-world history of Ashiya in folklore,
Kenjaku's reaction upon witnessing New Shadow Style in Shibuya, and his Buddhist monk
garments. The legendary figure Ashiya in real life folklore has connections to several other
historical figures mentioned in Jujutsu Kaisen: Sugawara no Michizane, Gojo and Yuta's
ancestor; Kamo no Yasunori, who was Ashiya's teacher; and Abe no Seimei (referenced in Ch.
43/Ep. 18) who was Ashiya's rival. Based on the folklore, it is also possible that if Kenjaku is
Doman, then Tengen might be Michizane.
● Reddit thread (bushwarblerssong)
Abe no Seimei is the Zenin Ancestor and/or Created 10 Shadows
Seimei was said to be able to summon the 12 Divine Generals, one of whom is
Makora/Mahoraga which can be summoned through 10 Shadows. It is possible Seimei is an
ancestor of the Zenin. Seimei may have been related to Taira no Masakado, one of the three
great vengeful spirits (Nihon San Dai Onryō) of Japan.
● Video by WAYA discussing ancestors
Tengen is Related to/is Sugawara no Michizane
Tengen may be one of the Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan. In lore, his deified form as the
god of knowledge is called 'Tenjin', and Kenjaku has likened Tengen and his immortality
Cursed Technique to that of a tree, relating to the kanji in Tengen's name which can refer to a
plant root or tree trunk. Furthermore, a colossal tree, surrounded by many smaller trees, grows
within the Tomb of the Star Corridor around Tengen's shrine.
● Reddit thread
Tengen is Sukuna
The comment sentiment is that Tengen, whose motives and original identity are clouded, is
hiding something important about the Culling Games. Some fans theorize that Tengen is
Sukuna or was once part of him. In Ch. 208, Kenjaku compares Tengen's appearance to
Sukuna's in a direct parallel.
Uraume is Based on/Related to Unai from Motomezuka
Uraume's icy Cursed Technique and appearance are similar to Unai's from the play
Motomezuka (The Sought-for Grave). In the play, Unai chooses the hellfire of Sukuna over
Buddha's paradise. This may simply be an allusion, or Uraume may be related to/the same
person as Unai.

2nd OP Foreshadows Gojo Losing an Eye
The 1st and 2nd OPs both foreshadow events in the manga--Junpei's death, Mechamaru's
death, Nanami's injuries, Geto's death, etc. It's possible that the one-eyed cat--widely believed
to represent Akutami--and the shot of Gojo's eyes with blinding light in one of them
foreshadows Gojo losing an eye in the future. Crack theories suggest Gojo might sacrifice an
eye to escape the Prison Realm using a binding.

2nd OP Foreshadows Yaga's Death
In the 2nd anime opening, which foreshadows manga events such as Mechamaru and perhaps
Nanami's death, among other things, it's possible that the funeral and mourning taking place in
the beginning is for Yaga, who died in Ch. 147. There is a trail of incense visible, as well as
Panda beating chest, perhaps in rage or grief, as well as a shot of Gojou approaching in the rain
with a bouquet of flowers, possibly for his dead mentor and friend.

Ushi no Toki Mairi / Hour of the Ox
Ushi no Koku / Toki Mairi is a magic ritual from Japanese lore which is performed between 1am
and 3am, during the inauspicious Hour of the Ox. Fans have theorized that Nobara or her
grandma will will utilize this ritual, or that her future return from the dead will parallel this
magic. The magic of straw straw dolls is involved and in some stories, is purported to raise a
corpse no longer than a week dead from the grave, turning it into an oni which will eventually
revert into its original human form.

Panda's Siblings are Yaga's Other Dead Children / Miscarriage Theory
The manga seems to imply that Panda's brother and sister, the triceratops and the gorilla, are
Cursed Corpses made from the soul's of Yaga's real children, just like Panda. Theory by anon
created at Ch. 147 release:
"So we know Yaga is divorced (Fanbook). And we know that the soul data is drawn out
at the time of death as seen by Takeru. Panda began life as a baby. So...could it be that
Yaga and his wife were trying to have children, but could never carry to term, so
Panda's cores are actually either three early terminated pregnancies or stillbirths, and
Panda is in fact, Yaga's children? ....Which makes it such that perhaps Yaga really did
"go to see his son" then, in the end, in the afterlife."
Anon also states the following points: As seen in Ch. 185, there are three tablets which may
symbolize Yaga and his two children (not including Panda). In Asian tradition, it makes little
sense for non-family members to have tablets memorializing death together. In addition, on
Ch. 185 release, anon speculated:
"Why would a cursed corpse call him dad? Remember, cursed corpses retain some level
of their individuality. And then added to that, Yaga treated Panda like his actual baby,
dressed it up like a baby, raised it as a baby, even has a bank account he manages for
Panda that he gives allowances out of. He doesn't do that with any of his other cursed
corpses."
If Panda's siblings also call Yaga 'dad', it only adds to the evidence that they are truly the blood
children of Yaga, just like Panda's core. Why would Yaga come to rescue a simple 'data copy'
doll in Ch. 147? "Panda of all his cursed corpses is the one to lure Yaga out" rather than a doll
imbued with a random child's soul.

Moon Theory
Moon phases hold symbolic significance in Buddhism. The exact phase of the moon is named
several times during the story, often marking pivotal or portentous events such as Sukuna's
reincarnation and the Star Plasma Vessel's projected merge with Tengen. By documenting and
examining the moon phases shown clearly in the manga/anime, and by calculating moon
phases stated only implicitly, we can conclude that an important event, such as the end of the
Culling Game or a major death, may occur on December 8th or March 20th, Yuji's birthday.

Geto's Cursed Spirit Manipulation is Like a Reproductive System

and ate childern, and was then enlightened by Buddha to become a protector instead.

Some fans theorize that Yuki is not permanently dead as of Ch. 208, but that due to a dilation
of time from the immense gravitational pull of her Black Hole, which Kenjaku negated with his
own Technique, she will return by traveling backward through time. The change in the
day/night sky before and after Kenjaku's fight with Choso and Yuki is the sole piece of evidence
for this. Another version of this theory stipulates that she merged with Tengen and is actually
saved, or that Garuda holds her soul and since Garuda was not shown being destroyed,
somehow Yuki merged with Tengen through Garuda. There is no manga evidence to legitimize
this theory, which emerged primarily from fans coping with her speedy death.

Gojo Will Lose an Eye
In both anime openings and in the trailer for the Jujutsu Kaisen mobile game Phantom Parade,
there is imagery suggesting Gojo's left eye may be lost. Since Akutami has significant influence
on the production of the anime and the OPs/EDs include many layers of symbols, it is not a
stretch to say this symbolism may be a portent of the future.

Gojo Will Kill Himself and Come Back as a Vengeful Spirit or Sacrifice an Eye
to Escape the Prison Realm
The Prison Realm operates off of a binding in order to seal the victim. The only way to escape
from the realm without it being opened from the outside is to die. It is possible that Gojo could
create his own binding to escape. Giving up an eye might be a sufficient tradeoff since his Six
Eyes are the source of much of his power, although it is unclear whether losing an eye would
destroy Six Eyes. Additionally, he might be able to come back as a Vengeful Spirit if he were to
kill himself, effectively escaping the PR but retaining some power or even becoming stronger in
death.
Uraume Was the Last Person Trapped Inside the Prison Realm
How is Uraume alive after all this time, if they're an ally of Sukuna's from his original era? It is
possible they were trapped inside the Prison Realm and therefore did not age. We also do not
know how Kenjaku acquired the Prison Realm. It's possible Kenjaku acquired the PR and then
freed Uraume so he could use it to trap Gojo.

Doors Theory
There is a long-running theory among fans that the hallway in the
Vol. 1 chapter cover illustration represents the false rumor in
which Gege allegedly stated there would be three major arcs. Each
door signifies an arc. The theory is compounded by the repeat
cover in Vol. 14, where Yuuji appears in the hallway.

Kenjaku Performed a Lobotomy on Choso
Some fans have theorized that Kenjaku performed a lobotomy on
Choso. In the manga, he appears to be wearing bandages during
his initial appearances. Also in Shibuya, he has two black eyes
(side effect of a transorbital lobotomy), he experiences
Jump to | Fanbook | Theories | Translation Notes | Light Novels | Locations Map | Literary Analysis
confusion/memory issues, and he has a pounding headache. Also, Choso has memories of his
father, when in Origin of Obedience it is stated that Death Paintings have no memories of their
parents.
Kenjaku is Tengen/Part of Tengen's Consciousness
The theory is that Kenjaku is Tengen, or is one part of Tengen's mosaic of human
consciousnesses that broke off and went rogue, or is secretly working with Tengen. Tengen is
also largely an unknown.

Kenjaku Staged the Fight Between Gojo and Megumi's Ancestors
Given the timeline, and the fact of Kenjaku's involvement in the death of a past Six Eyes, it's
entirely possible that he orchestrated the fight between the Ten Shadows user and the Six
Eyes/Limitless user that killed Gojo and Megumi's ancestors.
Retired Theories

Naoya Will Return as a Vengeful Spirit
confirmed (Ch. 191)
Naoya was not killed with Cursed Energy and likely died with regrets, which renders the idea
of him returning as a Vengeful Spirit entirely plausible. In addition, he died in a location with a
high concentration of negative emotion resulting from a massacre of 23 Kukuru and 5 Hei.
Furthermore, he died to a person of much lower stature than him, an idea by which he was
repulsed. He also may have been unable to ascertain who his killer was. The circumstances of
his death greatly increase the likelihood of a VS spawning (credit to Mallua). A common
sentiment since Chapter 190 was leaks is that the giant worm Curse may be Naoya due to his
speech patterns.

⚙ Kenjaku Created Yuji as Sukuna’s Vessel/is Yuji's Dad/Mom
fully confirmed (Ch. 160)
mostly confirmed (Ch. 143)
Since Kenjaku is confirmed to have been in control of Noritoshi Kamo, it’s possible that his
experiments with fetuses (like the Death Paintings) also involved creating a vessel for Sukuna.
There is also the possibility that Yuji is of mixed blood--part cursed spirit, part human, like the
Death Paintings. At the very least, Kenjaku did admit to feeding Yuji some of Sukuna’s fingers,
so it's entirely possible he planted the first finger in Yuji's school and arranged for him to
Jump to | Fanbook | Theories | Translation Notes | Light Novels | Locations Map | Literary Analysis
consume it, taking on Sukuna. Additionally, it's possible that the Death Paintings were a test
run experiment by Kenjaku to create Yuji.
Furthermore, Jin Itadori's second wife (?) is shown to have scars from stitches in her
forehead, meaning that Kenjaku may have created Yuji through procreation, by possessing his
mother's corpse, and not simply experimentation or meddling. A theory from Baidu, translated
by Shiba: "They're saying that Jin made a deal with Brainy, that Brainy took out Kaori's brain
and transplanted it into a new body. For Jin, it's fine since it's still technically Kaori, and she's
been resurrected (just in a new body, and one that can bear a child as well!). This new body
might be the original death painting brother's birth mom. The stitches on the head implies that
Brainy used to occupy the body and might've used RCT to keep the body fresh for the last
150yrs. That's why the scars on the head are "healed" ones."
(Note: The general theory of Kenjaku as Yuji's parent is confirmed, but not all the
various theorized details.)

Sukuna Plans to Use Megumi's Technique to Resurrect Himself
partially confirmed Ch. 212
Sukuna has shown strong interest in Megumi, which may involve using Ten Shadows to
resurrect himself or be freed from Yuji’s control, and may also involve the binding vow he made
with Yuji. Since it was revealed in the fanbook that Sukuna was a cannibal, it is possible that if
Sukuna can consume people's Cursed Techniques by eating shamans, then he may want to eat
Megumi to steal his technique.

Yuji is a Blood Relation of Noritoshi Kamo/Choso/Death Paintings
confirmed
If Kenjaku is responsible for Yuji's birth as a vessel, that also might mean Yuji is some
'descendant' of Kamo's in the same way that Choso is. In Ch. 135, Choso claims to have a
blood connection with Yuji like he did with Eso and Kechizu. He also says in Ch. 139 that Yuji
should remember his father had stitches on his forehead, as all of Kenjaku’s hosts do. It is
possible this is not a result of Yuji's memory manipulation, but that Choso's claims are accurate.
And, as previously stated, it's possible that the Death Paintings were a test run experiment by
Kenjaku to create Yuji.

Brain Planned Geto's Downfall
probably debunked (Ch. 145)
Brain notes in Shibuya that he coveted Geto's Cursed Technique. It is possible that he planned
Geto's fall from grace, including the entire incident with the star plasma vessel, in order to
steal his body. It is suspicious that a replacement vessel was found quickly after Riko was
killed. [In Ch. 145, Kenjaku states that Toji's interference was random.]
Rika is the Dead Girl Mentioned in Fearsome Womb
likely debunked
In Ch. 6 Megumi mentions a girl who was hit by a car and killed years ago by Tadashi. Given
Tadashi’s current age, he may have been the one who killed Rika in Vol. 0. You can see from the
photo the same smear of blood on the pavement. [Rika died in Miyagi prefecture in Sendai City,
and Tadashi was imprisoned in a detention center in Tokyo. The distance between the two
locations is unreasonably far, and it is unlikely that Tadashi committed the crime in the north
and then was imprisoned far in the south. In addition, Rika was killed in 2010, and Tadashi was
sent to prison in 2017, so he is likely not Rika's killer.]

Post-Shibuya Rika is Not Rika/Is Another Dead Girl half correct (Ch. 178)
Some fans believe that due to Rika's unexplained reappearance post-Shibuya after Yuta
dispelled her curse in Volume 0, she may be 'another' Rika or even the spirit of another dead
girl that Yuta had cursed to create a new 'Rika' while traveling with Miguel in Africa. The fact
that her name in Ch. 141 is written in katakana rather than kanji as in Vol. 0 indicates she is
something foreign or 'other'.
