Introduction and Scenario

Mt. Kalatungan, with an elevation of 2, 824 meters (asl) is considered as the sixth
highest mountain range in the country. It is covers Valencia City and the municipalities of
Maramag, Talakag and Pangantucan. It has become a favourite destination among
mountain trekkers because of its “difficult climb” as described by Mt. Everest climber Carina
Dayondon. The mossy forest is home to many different species of flora and fauna and of the
majestic Kaayatan Falls. It is considered as an important watershed supplying the needs of
the municipalities of Pangantucan and Maramag in Bukidnon. The richness of biodiversity in
the forest is proven by the recent sightings of Philippine eagle.
However, the rich biodiversity continues to be threatened by human activities as
kaingin and illegal logging despite government efforts to preserve the area. To foster public
awareness as to the importance of protecting and preserving the forest, the province of
Bukidnon organized an annual celebration called “Andew te Keretungen” or Mt. Kalatungan
Day. During this day residents from the barangays of the Valencia City and the municipalities
of Maramag, Talakag and Pangantucan gather for a festivity and most especially to conduct
environment-friendly acts such as tree planting and tree caring on the denuded base of the
mountain range.
