Learning about absolute value equations is important for several reasons, both in practical applications and
Lesson Purpose/Intention in developing a deeper understanding of mathematics. Today, you need to learn on how to solve an absolute

An absolute value equation in the form |𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃| = 𝒄 has the following properties:
• If 𝑐 < 0,|𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐 has no solution.
Lesson Language Practice • If 𝑐 = 0,|𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐 has one solution.

For any algebraic expressions, 𝑢 and 𝑣, if |𝑢| = |𝑣|, then: 𝑢 = 𝑣 or 𝑢 = −𝑣.

Given the following absolute value equations, which one will produce no solution? one solution? two
solutions? infinite many solutions?

|𝑥 − 3| = 9 |2𝑥 − 8| = −6 |𝑥 − 7| = 0 |2𝑥 − 1| = 2𝑥 − 1 |2𝑥 − 1| = −(2𝑥 − 1)

A while ago, we discuss that the absolute value equation in the form |𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃| = 𝒄 has the following
properties:
• If 𝑐 < 0,|𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐 has no solution.
• If 𝑐 = 0,|𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐 has one solution.
• If 𝑐 > 0,|𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐 has two solutions.

The first three given absolute value equations are all in the form |𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏| = 𝑐, so we will only look for the
value of 𝑐 in the equation to determine how many solutions are there.
Developing Understanding of
the Key Idea/Stem In |𝑥 − 3| = 9, 𝑐 = 9 and it is greater than 0, 𝑐 > 0, so it has two solutions. When we solve this, we will really
10 minutes have two solutions.
|𝑥 − 3| = 9
𝑥−3=9 𝑥 − 3 = −9
𝑥 = 12 𝑥 = −6
𝑥 = 12 or 𝑥 = −6
Checking: |𝑥 − 3| = 9 |𝑥 − 3| = 9
|12 − 3| = 9 |−6 − 3| = 9
|9| = 9 |−9| = 9
9=9 9=9
In |2𝑥 − 8| = −6, 𝑐 = −6 and it is less than 0, 𝑐 < 0, so it has no solution. When we solve this, we will really
have no solution.

|2𝑥 − 8| = −6
2𝑥 − 8 = −6 2𝑥 − 8 = −(−6)
𝑥=1 𝑥=7
5
Checking: |2𝑥 − 8| = −6 |2𝑥 − 8| = −6
|2(1) − 8| = −6 |2(7) − 8| = −6
|−6| = −6 |6| = −6
6 = −6 6 = −6

Since the values of 𝑥 do not satisfy the original absolute value equation, these solutions are extraneous by
nature so we will not accept these as solutions. There is a solution in |2𝑥 − 8| = −6.

In |𝑥 − 7| = 0, 𝑐 = 0 so it has one solution. When we solve this, we will really have one solution.

|𝑥 − 7| = 0
𝑥−7=0
𝑥=7

Checking: |𝑥 − 7| = 0
|7 − 7| = 0
|0| = 0
0=0
In the case of |2𝑥 − 1| = 2𝑥 − 1, we will use the definition of the absolute value. The absolute value of x is
written as |𝑥|. It has the following properties:
If 𝑥 ≥ 0, then |𝑥| = 𝑥.
If 𝑥 ≤ 0, then |𝑥| = −𝑥.

Since the given equation falls on the first property, we have

2𝑥 − 1 ≥ 0
2𝑥 ≥ 1
!
𝑥≥"

We can use different notations to denote our solutions. The table below shows the summary of different
notations we can use for each of the given absolute value equations.

The absolute value of a real number 𝑛, |𝑛|, is the distance from zero to 𝑛 on a real number line. If 𝑛 is a
positive real number and 𝑢 is any algebraic expression, then |𝑢| = 𝑛 has two solutions 𝑢 = 𝑛 or 𝑢 = −𝑛. If 𝑛 is
negative, then the equation |𝑢| = 𝑛 has no real solution. If 𝑛 is zero, then 𝑢 = 0.
