Major Resin Type
Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)
• Two principal types used as standard in laminating systems,
Orthophthalic and Isophthalic
Vinyl Ester Resin (VER)
• Similar to Unsaturated Polyester Resin , but more water
resistant, stronger with greater flexibility
Epoxy Resin
• Best heat resistance, mechanical strength, and water resistance

Difference Structure of
UPR / VER / Epoxy
Othor type UPR
Iso type UPR
UPR:
Tere type UP
VER: BPA type VER
Epoxy: BPA type Epoxy

Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)
• Unsaturated polyester is a laminating resin
cured by adding MEKP hardener
• Orthophthalic Polyester is an all purpose
resin, Isophthalic Polyester is more water
resistant and the resin used for boatbuilding
• Polyester is mixed with up to 50% styrene, a
monomer to improve the resins viscosity
10 © Swancor│Confidential and Proprietary│ Confidential
Vinyl Ester Resin(VER)
• Vinyl ester has greater resistance to moisture,
more flexibility, better heat resistance and
toughness which gives the resin a real advantage
in reducing Osmosis compared to hulls laminated
from Polyester
• Cured in the same manner as Polyester using
MEKP as hardener
• The cost of Vinyl ester is between Epoxy and
Polyester
11 © Swancor│Confidential and Proprietary│ Confidential
Epoxy Resin
• Epoxy Resin cures by adding parts (A) and (B)
together, (A) being the resin and (B) being the
hardener, manufacturers choose a ratio for their own
product which would commonly be 5:1 or 3:1
• Epoxy resin will out perform other resins in terms of
its strength and its resistance to environmental
degradation
• Epoxy will cure through a range of temperatures from
5deg. to 150deg.
• Epoxy cures more slowly and releases less inorganic
material in the process than UPR and VER resins

Epoxy Resin
• Epoxy resins cure more slowly and release less
volatile vapour than UPR and VER
• Epoxy resin can be made to cure slowly and require
heating over a particular period of time to reach full
cure. This can be an advantage in some lamination
work

Purpose and Suitability
• Vinyl ester resin (VER) and Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) can
be used by hand layup or VATRM process in the production boat
building Industry. VER and UPR and adhere with each other , but
They will not adhere well to wood
• Epoxy will not adhere to UPR and VER , however it does adhere
strongly to wood
• VER and UPR are cured when a curing agent is introduced which
triggers that curing process. Its addition is by a percentage of the
resin volume, 1 to 2.5%
• Epoxy can be mixed with various powders to change its viscosity
and form a glue or filler

Purpose and Suitability
• Epoxy part A and B must be accurately measured
for a cure to reach maximum strength
• Epoxy resin is used in the custom boatbuilding
field to laminate racing boat hull and decks,
masts, and components, often cured and vacuum
bagged in an Auto clave, or vacuum infused over
a hull or deck mould
• It is used in modern wooden boat construction to
form a composite structure with wood as the core

Health and Safety
• The exposure to styrene in UPR and VER should be
minimised and air extraction, a breathing mask, rubber
gloves, a paper suit and footwear should be worn
during laminating work.
• The flashpoint of styrene is 32°C ,Which categorizes
UPR and VER as flammable liquids
What precautions should be taken?
• No exposed electrical connections, Fire extinguishers at
hand, no smoking, store in a dangerous goods store, be
careful of spillages

901-VP Properties
SWANCOR 901-VP is a low viscosity, promoted Bisphenol A type epoxy vinyl
ester resin with a low peak exothermic development during curing process. It
provides excellent corrosion resistance to a broad range of organic and inorganic
acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals and salt solutions etc. It also provides very
good mechanical strength such as tensile and flexural while incorporated with
reinforcement such glass fiber, carbon fiber etc. SWANCOR 901-VP is designed
to provide superior toughness with excellent fatigue resistance due to high heat
distortion temperature.

901-TP Properties
SWANCOR 901-TP is a Bis-phenol A type pre-thixotroped pre-promoted epoxy
vinyl ester resin. The product is good for applications requiring non-drippings or non-
saggings. It provides excellent corrosion resistance to a broad range of organic and
inorganic acids, alkalis, oxidizing chemicals and salt solutions etc. It also provides very
good mechanical strength such as tensile and flexural while incorporated with
reinforcement such glass fiber, carbon fiber or kevler fiber etc. Generally, SWANCOR
901-TP provide superior toughness with excellent fatigue resistance. It has good heat
distortion temperature up to 100°C.
