The Palgrave Handbook of Geopolitics and Security in the Indo-Pacific
Headline
The Palgrave Handbook of Geopolitics and Security in the Indo-Pacific presents an in-depth and inter-
disciplinary examination of the geopolitical and security dynamics across East, South, and Southeast
Asia, and beyond. It aims to establish connections across these regions by exploring the geopolitical
connections that exist among them. It offers a vital resource for all scholars and students interested
in the geopolitical and security dynamics across the Indo-Pacific. The handbook is divided into four
parts:
Part I: Conceptual issues
Part II: National issues
Part III: Regional issues

Part IV: Cross-regional and global issues
Description of the project’s scope and content
The Indo-Pacific region, along with its wider geopolitical and geoeconomic interconnections, is
rapidly developing into a significant area of focus and a complex network of new challenges in the
realm of international politics. It comprises several of the most vital, delicate, and intricate systems
and relationships in the world, which revolve around strategic, political, military, and security
considerations. The complex and multifaceted dynamics of the broader region, involving multiple
stakeholders at the sub-state, state, and supra-state levels, represent rapid evolving and emerging
challenges and opportunities. These circumstances have attracted the interest of the most
influential and significant global actors and are characterised by neo-colonialist policies, territorial
disputes, foreign interests, and great power competition. Additionally, militarisation, nuclear
threats, and deep-rooted structural competition further define and exacerbate the region.
This volume presents a dynamic re-conceptualisation and critical re-establishment of the term
‘geopolitics’, which is intricately intertwined with Indo-Pacific actors and relations that are
frequently over-essentialised. Scholars, decision-makers, and professionals from all over the world
will write the chapters that make up the proposed volume. Each chapter will vary in length from a
minimum of 6,000 words to a maximum of 10,000 words (including references). The chapters that
are being proposed for the volume will offer a comprehensive, scholarly, and interdisciplinary
exploration of current viewpoints regarding national policies, challenges, and ambitions.
Additionally, they will cover thematic and conceptual aspects while carrying out analyses that
employ various security and international relations (IR) theories and the concept of geopolitics.
