Foreword

This book and its contents are the result of months of work researching
Kitsune for a senior paper, coupled with many more months agonizing over
how to translate the idea of Kitsune into a tabletop pen & paper role-playing
experience. While it is far from perfect, it does work well within the rules of
the game system in which it is set.

The intention is to give a thorough idea of what Kitsune as a race

should be at their core, and to base that idea on mythology and cultural
influences from Japan.

I spent nine months in Japan and absorbed a lot of culture while I was
there. Before that, I had spent years studying Japanese culture through
anime, not simply watching it but trying to research and understand the
cultural influences which inspired different tropes and character types.

I based many things in this book on actual tales from Japanese

mythology to the point that even if you have no previous exposure to the
culture, you will find many things familiar should you run into their real-life
inspirations.

Even should you never seek out or read more about Japanese culture
or mythology, I want this book and the race, culture, society, and powers it
adds to the game to be truly grounded in those things, if for no other reason
than to show respect.

Thank you for (hopefully) purchasing this book. I hope you enjoy it.

Special thanks:

To my mother, for always believing in my ability to tell a story is greater than I

think it is. Thanks for pushing me to keep writing.

Thank you to the artist and beta reader who brought all my illustration ideas
to life, even the boarder on each page, Thomas Lupex.

Thanks to my other beta readers, Brandon Berger, D. Grey, Opal,

WingedRayeth, Salem Adams Kusanaga, and Spike Parrett.

Born from the Harvest
収穫から生まれた

Legends and folktales about Kitsune are numerous in their native

Reikoku, or “Land of Spirits” as it is known in other countries. Few of these
legends are told outside the fishing and rice farming villages. Most that
circulate in large cities or make it to other nations are those of old ladies given
help suddenly becoming monstrous foxes. Other tales tell of hapless travelers
treated to nights of revelry in the woods, only to find they were eating twigs and
grass instead of fey delicacies. Yet there is more to these powerful creatures
than simple malevolence, if one has the will to delve deeper.

In ancient times, the people of Reikoku were beset by all manner of

spirits and monsters, commonly called yōkai, that plagued their land and made
life difficult for the common folk. Warlords and emperors had the brave samurai
swordmasters and personal shinobi to protect them, but the common people
had little more than the occasional wandering priest to lay talismans on their
doors, and many of them were spirits in disguise.

The gods knew of the people’s plight, but had little power to bring to bear,
as many were only worshiped by the nobility or monks, those who had time to
do such things. One deity had the support of the people, however, the harvest
goddess, Inari. She had great power from her many worshipers across the land
who gave prayers daily for good harvests and made offerings of their first
yields in her name. Inari, however, was a gentle goddess who desired only
prosperity, and could not fight the yōkai. So she sought the help of the humble
fox.

Foxes had long been the friend to farmers of all crops, chasing away
vermin from field and granary alike. They were not pets, but they benefited
from the prosperity of the farmer, and he by their assistance. Inari went to the
two most benevolent foxes she could find, a female snow fox and a male red
fox, and offered them her power if they swore to serve under her and protect
her people. They readily agreed and the Kitsune were born. They hunted yōkai
as efficiently as they and their kin had pests before, yet the people knew little
of their deeds.

male ancestor of all female ancestor of all
Kitsune, called the Kitsune, named
Descendant of the Daughter of the Moon
Sun for his fiery coat for her gleaming white-

nature.

After successfully suppressing the yōkai threat, Yourou-sama and

Tsukiko-sama, with Inari’s blessing, raised other Kitsune to form the nine clans,
or nine tails of Kitsune society. The clans have long since intermarried and
other, smaller clans formed, but the sacred number of nine is still strong in the
Kitsune. Nine is the number of tails a Kitsune may earn as they grow in age
and wisdom, and after their time is come, like their progenitors, they retire to
Inari’s side in the afterlife.

Kitsune operated in secrecy and shadow frequently, owing to their nature

as foxes before. Those who were bolder were sometimes feared as what they
fought against and some were attacked by those they were trying to protect.
Over time, the people came to understand that the yōkai hunters were Inari’s
messengers and praised her all the more for it. As thanks to Inari, for her
protection, they offered gifts of rice and tofu. Over time, this developed into
Inarizushi, a popular food item among Kitsune even to this day.

Reborn with Two Forms
二つの姿で生まれ変われた
Kitsune are anthropomorphic fox creatures with digitigrade legs,
meaning they stand on their “toes” like any feral fox. This, along with their
fluffy, luxurious tails give them a keen sense of balance and a natural grace
when walking that speaks to their wild origins. The pelt of a Kitsune is
colored depending on their bloodline. Some bear the common red fox
markings, while others who live in northern climes have coats like freshly
fallen snow with hints of light blue to hide amid the clear sky of a winter’s
day horizon.

Early in the history of the species, illusions were commonly used to

cloak a Kitsune who was protecting a village, or to make them appear
human while ferreting out those other yōkai who could shape-shift and
create illusions. However, this caused a problem when this hidden nature
was turned against them and the people were made to believe them to be
monsters, much like the yōkai they fought.

Their solution was to undergo a ritual at a young age which granted

them a Human1 form, allowing them to be physically changed so no magic
could break their disguise. These forms are chosen during the ritual and
pulled from the imagination of the Kitsune undergoing it. They cannot be
changed after the ritual is completed. This means that Kitsune have two
“true forms,” one Human, and one anthropomorphic. Kitsune usually live for
several hundred years, gaining an extra tail for every century of life. There
are no reports of Kitsune living beyond 1000 years of age.

Kitsune Names
狐族の名前
Kitsune typically have names in Sylvan2, and the native language of
Reikoku, known as Kyōtsū-go. The Sylvan versions are rarely used outside of
Kitsune society, as the names have quite clear, literal meanings, and can
sound simplistic to other speakers of Sylvan. The names are usually one or
two short syllables which have to do with the circumstances of one’s birth, the
color of their fur or eyes, or a prophecy made about them by a Kitsune
Stargazer. Male names are appended with -rou and female ones with -ko, with
both roughly meaning “child”.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Male Names: Kourou. Kokurou, Negirou, Tairou.
Female Names: Aiko, Suiko, Tsuchiko, Funeko.

Traditionally, last names are by clan, which are usually translated into sylvan,
which often make them sound rather silly to sylvan ears.

Kitsune Society
狐族の社会
In Kitsune society, one’s social rank is determined by how closely and how
well one serves Inari. All Kitsune begin life as nogitsune, with no overtly magical
powers. When they reach puberty, they become chiko, and are given the ability
to move up in the ranks as a Zenko. Those who turn away from the higher gifts
that Inari has to offer, and rely on the powers of illusion and trickery, become
Yōko.

Although many Kitsune live solitary lives, traveling around so as not to

arouse suspicion when they refuse to age as humans should, they retain strong
ties to their families and, except in extreme circumstances, return home every
nine years for a special festival. Tamamo-no-mai or “The Dance of Tamamo”
revolves around the story of Tamamo, a powerful, nine-tailed, dark Tenko who
fell prey to the influence of a deadly stone. Bewitched as she was by the sessho-
seki, known as “Killing Stone”, she enchanted a horde of yōkai to attack
Reikoku. The valiant efforts of many heroes took her down and shattered the evil
stone, allowing her soul to rest in peace.

The festival is about unity, family, and freedom. Rivalries and

disagreements among clans and between Tenko and Yōko are laid to rest for the
nine day festival. Many also commute for the yearly Obon festival, which is in
memory of the Kitsune ancestors. Over the years it has also come to be a time
for the long-lived Kitsune to commiserate over the losses of those whom they
have loved and have lost outside their race, whether they be adventuring friends
or lovers from shorter-lived races.

Stats and Abilities
(what we know you all
came here for to begin with)
The natural grace of Kitsune coupled with being raised to trickery and
pranks grants you greater innate charm. Your Charisma increases by 2.

Darkvision3: Night hunters by nature, Kitsune can see further in darkness

than normal. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light,
and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only
shades of gray.

Foxfire: Kitsune are able to call upon their fey nature to create spheres of
flame known as kitsune-bi, or “fox-fire”, and work much of their special magic
through this medium. As an action, you can create a sphere of illusory flame in
your space, roughly 4 inches in diameter. The color of the flame is normal by
default but this can change depending on subrace. The flames can be moved
your speed as a bonus action, or will remain at your side if not commanded
otherwise, but it cannot be more than 120ft away from you. You can extinguish all
foxfire on your turn as a free action. Foxfire sheds bright light in a 10ft radius, and
dim for another 10ft. You can only have one sphere of foxfire at first. At levels 5,
11, and 17, you gain an additional sphere of foxfire. All spheres can be moved
independently with one bonus action, and last until extinguished, or you fall
unconscious.

Foxfire Burst: As an action, you can command your foxfire at a target within
range you can see as a ranged spell attack using your Charisma modifier. On hit,
the foxfire latches onto them, distracting the victim and giving them disadvantage
on all attack rolls and skill checks until the end of your next turn. This ability
recharges on a short rest. You can target one additional creature for each extra
sphere of foxfire you have.

Human Shape: Kitsune are given a human form at a young age, via a
special ritual. As an action, you can assume the shape of a human. This must be
the same specific form each time, and cannot be modified. This change remains
until you use an action to return to your Kitsune shape. Magical means to detect
or prevent shapeshifting can only detect or stop the change between forms and
have no affect on a Kitsune already in human form. While using human shape,
you lose Darkvision but retain all other traits. This is not an active magic spell
and is not suppressed upon entering an Antimagic Field 4.

Language and Proficiency: All Kitsune know Common and

Sylvan and are trained in Deception.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Subraces
Zenko 善狐

+1 Wisdom

Zenko have partaken in rituals to honor Inari and dedicate themselves

to her service. While this does grant them some measure of divine power, it
is slight, and spread throughout their being, to mature with time. After their
first hundred years of service, they become Kiko, then eventually Tenko, and
finally retiring as Kūko.

Zenko Foxfire: The foxfire that Zenko wield is typically white or, at
higher ranks, golden in color. Additionally, all Zenko can use their foxfire to
help detect and reveal illusions and deceptions. Once per short rest, you can
cause your foxfire to act as Detect Magic 5, but only within the light it sheds.
This effect lasts for 10 minutes, or until the foxfire is extinguished, whichever
comes first, and the information is revealed to all who can see the foxfire’s
light.

The divine power of Inari

urges most Zenko to
encourage growth, prosperity,
and self-cultivation. While not
a restriction on becoming a
villain, most high-ranking
Zenko would find it difficult or
impossible to run completely
counter to Inari’s will. Note the
exception in the story of
Tamamo. As such, this should
be used to add nuance to
playing a Zenko, rather than
punish Zenko players or
restrict their alignment/class.

A Zenko performing an exorcism after using their foxfire to reveal

the spirit.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Yōko 妖狐

+1 Dexterity

Yōko are Kitsune who, for whatever reason, refuse to follow in the service
of Inari. This does not make them evil, nor do they always oppose Zenko. Often,
these are the Kitsune who simply want to live their lives however they see fit and
rely on their wits and powers to get what they desire out of life. Without the
higher blessings of Inari these Kitsune rely on their natural instincts and abilities
to further their goals instead of divinely inspired wisdom and faith. Yōko can still
worship Inari, or another divine, as they wish.

Yōko foxfire: Most Yōko use foxfire of darker, ghostly colors, such as
blues, with many evil ones choosing to use purple. You can make the light from
your foxfire visible only to yourself, or hide just the flame itself and leave the
glow.
In addition, you can cause the flame to
look like something else entirely. As an action,
you can use Minor Illusion6 through your foxfire,
treating it as the spell in all respects aside from
range (area remains 5ft cube), and duration
(which is indefinite). The spell save DCs for all
Kitsune racial abilities are Charisma-based.

Kitsune Feats

Fox Form
Prerequisite: Kitsune

+1 Wisdom OR +1 Dexterity

You gain the ability to change into a feral fox. You gain the physical ability
scores of a fox, and retain your mental ability scores when you enter this form.
Changing into or out of this form takes an action. This form is treated the same
as Human Shape, preventing it from being detected or reversed by magic, but
it does not absorb any clothes or equipment into it. When you assume fox
form, all worn items and other gear are dropped to the ground around you.
However, acting outside the nature of a wild fox may cause creatures to
become suspicious of you.

Left: Kitusne in human form. Center: Kitsune in anthro form. Right: Kitsune in fox form.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Advanced Kitsune Shapechange

Prerequisite: Kitsune

You have mastered the art of changing between different forms. You can
now take the form of any humanoid you wish when you shapechange, and
you can do so as a bonus action. This change comes in two flavors, major
and minor shapechange.

Minor: You change your form to look like a different Human or Kitsune.
You can also appear as an Elf7 or Half-Elf8. These changes can emulate any
specific person, and give you advantage on deception checks to impersonate
them. You can only pick a new form once per short rest, but can use it as long
as desired.

Major: You change your shape to that of a race far different from either
Human or Kitsune. This acts as the Change Appearance option of Alter Self 9,
except the action required is only a bonus action. It is subject to Dispel
Magic10 and spells and abilities that detect shapechange effects. This ability
recharges on a long rest.

Kiko
Prerequisite: Zenko Kitsune, 100+ years old

+1 Wisdom OR Charisma

You advance to the rank of Kiko, gaining a small shard of Inari’s divine
power to dwell within your body. This grants you enhanced powers with your
foxfire. The light of your foxfire can reveal more than just magic when called
upon. When enhancing your foxfire to reveal magical auras, you can also
cause it to reveal invisible creatures, outlining them in a solid white aura at the
edges. This can also reveal objects rendered invisible.

Adept Kitsune Illusion

Prerequisite: Yōko Kitsune

You increase your mastery of illusions using your foxfire, granting you the
ability to use Major Image11 once per long rest, with the exception that the
spell emanates from one of your foxfire spheres. At 16 th level, treat
this as if cast using a 6th level spell slot, removing the concentration
trait from the spell.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Tenko

Prerequisite: Zenko Kitsune, Kiko, 300+ years old

+1 Wisdom OR Charisma

You advance to the rank of Tenko, gaining a second shard of Inari’s power.
This divine energy is strong enough that defying the will of Inari can have
consequences for the Kitsune, including loss of foxfire powers. What constitutes a
violation and how it is punished is up to the Game Master. Your foxfire can now
reveal information (such as magical auras and ethereal creatures), at will.

Inari’s Guidance: When you use the Foxfire Burst ability you can call upon
Inari to guide your allies’ weapons. Any creature hit by your foxfire has disadvantage
on saving throws as well. Additionally, you can designate one affected creature to
glow like a beacon. The next attack against this creature is an automatic hit, (do not
make an attack roll) although it cannot be a critical hit.

Advanced Kitsune Illusion

Prerequisite: Yōko Kitsune, Adept Kitsune Illusion

+1 Dexterity OR Charisma

You reach greater heights of trickery prowess, granting you the ability to
cast Mislead12 using your Foxfire. One of your foxfire spheres must be used to
maintain this spell, however, others may be used to maintain other illusions.
This ability recharges on a long rest.

trexrarthur aytes (Order #32328276)

Inari Ookami, Goddess of the Harvest
収穫の神稲荷大神
Inari’s worship is often spread by Kitsune in disguise as humans, and it isn’t
uncommon for more nature-centric races to pick up on it. Inari’s domains are
Nature13 and Life14, her alignment is Neutral Good, and her symbol is a nine-tailed
fox (a kyuubi, 九尾 ), wreathed in rice or wheat sheaves. Inari has no specific
association with any weapons, but if one were to fight in her name, a short sword
like a tantō 短刀 or a kama 鎌 would be appropriate, as they can both be a tool.

Inari’s shrines can be as simple as a miniature wooden housing with a fox

statue to stand guard. More elaborate temples are marked by any number of red
Torii gates to guide visitors in. All temples in Reikoku have a space to purify the
hands and mouth with clean water before entering the main area, as purity is
often the fine line which separates a kami from a yōkai.

Notes from the Author

Human and Fox shapes: This specifically allows Kitsune to circumvent

means created to detect and stop shapeshifters, as their transformation is an
inborn part of their species that is merely activated by the rituals. The act of
shapeshifting is magical and can be stopped by any normal means to halt
magical abilities such as an Antimagic Field, but entering such will not revert
a Kitsune in human form back to anthropomorphic form. Dispel Magic cannot
revert a Kitsune to any form, nor can Detect Magic reveal it. If a spell or
ability attempts to stop a Kitsune from activating their transformation, the
transformation is considered a spell equal to half your level rounded up.

Foxfire: It emits no heat, only light, so it cannot light things on fire or

provide heat in winter. Any ability that states it uses foxfire, such as the
Kitsune Illusion feat spells, have a range of 120ft as the foxfire sphere used
to maintain the spell must remain within that range or it will wink out and the
spell with it. Foxfire cannot go through solid objects, but it can be directed
mentally and without line of sight. You always know how far away and in
what direction your foxfire is. Yes, you could scout a hallway like this from
around the corner, but unless you’re a Yōko, it’s going to alert anyone in
those halls and it could take some time.

Kitsune Spells: All spells and abilities which are spell-like use
Charisma as their modifier and you are considered proficient. If the spell
level is not stated in the source material, it is considered to be half your level
rounded up. All statistics, such as duration, area of effect, concentration, line
of sight, etc. should be taken from the source material unless explicitly
overridden in the text of this document. For example: Yōko Foxfire’s imitation
of Minor Illusion has a range of Foxfire, 120ft. This overrides the normal
range because it utilizes the Kitsune’s Foxfire. However, it still requires
concentration and only affects a 5ft area.

Age Requirements and alignment: Both Kiko and Tenko list age
requirements, and Tenko heavily suggests it is not intended for evil
characters. These are subject to the whim of the individual GM. These
requirements and suggestions were entirely for purposes of making it fit
Japanese lore, ideas of Kitsune in media, and my own interpretation for this
document. Please consult your GM if you would like to play a younger
Tenko. Consider making it part of the story that they are “too young”
or otherwise inexperienced and use it as plot hooks. Great power
at a young age can cause problems and those can be used to add
great depth to a character!
