Birthday Celebrations

Chinese people greatly admire long life

Grand celebrations are held to celebrate the
sixtieth, seventieth, eightieth and ninetieth
birthdays. "Longevity noodles", steamed
peach-shaped "longevity bread" and a
multi-layer "longevity cake" with dates
are prepared for these occasions. In cities,
however, people usually just eat birthday
cake. The younger generation is expected
to come dressed nicely for these important
birthday celebrations, to present gifts and
offer birthday congratulations to the elderly
person whose birthday is being celebrated.
In the old days, people would kowtow to
express their respect and good wishes for
the person being honored. Today, however,
people will just bow deeply toward the
person. In general, hats, clothes and other
daily necessities, as well as food and artwork,
are often given as birthday presents. It's
common to have dinner with relatives and
good friends on one's birthday or go out to a
theatre performance together.
