Traditional media come from the people and antecede the mass media; their appeal has
historically been both functional and aesthetic. Whether of roughly hewn folk origins or of
classically rigid molds, they have always served to entertain, educate reinforce existing ideas
or ideologies or change existing values and attitudes. In other words, it is a means of changing
values, attitudes and norms in order to provide a proper climate for social and economic
progress. It is also a method of promoting certain behavioural acts or patterns. The aim is to
get people to perform specific acts to achieve the objectives of national policy (e.g. visiting
clinics, investing in bonds, using fertilizer). Moreover, it is a channel for conveying information
about available techniques and facilities which people may use to solve problems.
Being close to people at the local level, these channels are potentially useful in the service
of social concerns, as determined by local, provincial or national authorities themselves. They
are, moreover, abundantly present in areas where mass media technology has not been fully
or effectively developed to capture sustained interest at local, provincial or national levels.
Folk media are personal forms of entertainment and communication. This is important
because behavioural changes are most easily brought about by personal interaction. These
forms of art are a part of the way of life of a community and provide acceptable means of
bringing development issues into the community in their own terms. They are capable of
reaching intimate social groups, thus making use of already established communication
networks in the audience.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the following questions.
With exams approaching, you should be thinking about how to get better at time
management and organize your days so you can strike the right balance between home, work
and university life. You should also try and eat some brain food - and no, we don't mean crisps
and energy drinks!
By taking the time to arrange your priorities, you can give yourself the best chance of
staying on track and being organized during the exam period, which in turn can help reduce
stress levels, something that can be the difference between success and failure at university.
Take a look at our top time management tips, so that you can do your best at university
and also find moments to relax and even earn some money on the side.
First and foremost, allow time for planning to avoid repetition. Taking the time to
research, plan and think about your work is crucial for good time management. Allow yourself
the time to process new information and plan how you are going to use it, as this can help you
to avoid having to re-read and repeat any research. One way of effectively planning before
researching is to make a list of everything you want to find out, so that you can make notes
below each subheading as you go.
Secondly, avoid procrastination and distraction. One way to avoid procrastination is to
think about the different places you have been when studying - where were you the most
focused? Where were you most distracted? Is there anything you can do to make studying
actually somewhat enjoyable? Remember, what works for one person might not necessarily
work for you. For some, studying with friends can limit their productivity. But for others,
studying in groups can help to increase motivation and avoid procrastination.
Next, exercise to clear your head in between study sessions. Believe it or not, exercise
works in the same way sleep does. It can focus your state of mind, helping you to clear your
head and boost your brain power in between study sessions. If you're new to exercise, aim to
fit in a 10-minute run here and there, steadily increasing the amount you do as you go on.
Finally, ask yourself the question, "Has your organization been effective?" Constantly
reviewing and reassessing your schedule can help you to recognize whether you need to make
any changes in order to help you complete any university tasks and also have time to relax
and spend time with friends and family.

PASSAGE 1
Parents complain that it is difficult to live with teenagers. They again, teenagers say
exactly the same thing about their parents! According to a recent survey, the most common
arguments between parents and teenagers are those regarding untidiness and household
chores. On the one hand, parents go mad over untidy rooms, clothes dropped on the floor and
their children’s refusal to help with the housework. On the other hand, teenagers lose their
patience continually when parents tell them off for dropping the towel in the bathroom, not
cleaning up their room or refusing to do the shopping at the supermarket.
The survey, conducted by St George University, showed that different parents have
different approaches to these problems. However, some approaches are much more
successful than others. For example, those parents who yell at their teens for their untidiness,
but later clear up after them, have fewer chances of changing their teens’ behavior. On the
contrary, those who let teenagers experience the consequences of their actions are more
successful. For instance, when teenagers who don’t help their parents with the shopping don’t
find their favourite food in the fridge, they are forced to reconsider their actions.
Psychologists say that the most important thing in parent-teen relationships is
communication. Parents should talk to their teens, but at the same time they should listen to
what their children have to say. Parents should tell their teens off when they are untidy, but
they should also understand that their room is their own private space. Communication is a
two-way process. It is only by listening to and understanding each other that problems
between parents and teens can be solved.

PASSAGE 2
Whether it’s a tutorial or a competition, it’s clear that watching other people cook is
enjoyable for millions. It’s a bit of a conundrum: You’re watching mouth-watering meals come
together without the joy of getting to eat them. When you think about it, like someone placing
a plate of homemade pancakes just out of reach. But it’s not.
The reason why culinary shows are so comforting and enjoyable hasn’t been scientifically
studied, but Secrets From Eating Lab author Traci Mann, Ph.D, a professor of social and health
psychology at the University of Minnesota, has some thoughts. “When watching a food show,
you get to see a project come together from start to finish, which can be very satisfying,” she
says. Neuroscientist Rachel Herz, PhD, who wrote Why You Eat What You Eat agrees. “In that
sense, people like them for a similar reason that they like home design shows: You see
something come together over the course of an hour or half-hour.”
Whether you like to have them on in the background or activities like watching them, it’s
possible that culinary shows could change how you interact with food in real life. “There is
some evidence that suggests that people who watch food shows snack more while watching,”
Dr. Herz says. “While they might not be able to eat the food they see on screen, it seems that
they still want to snack on ‘something’,” she says.
Dr. Herz says watching cooking or food shows could also make you hungry. “Seeing
videos or pictures of food can get someone primed for eating,” she says. “You might not have
been hungry before sitting down on the couch, but ten minutes into watching a food show,
suddenly you are.”

Volunteering has been acknowledged as part of the wider health policy, with the NHS
five-year plan identifying a need to encourage community volunteering. It also has an
important role to play in tackling social exclusion, through projects such as lunch clubs for
older people, assisted gardening schemes, or young play leaders.
Volunteering can help to provide people with ways out of poverty, by giving them new
skills, confidence and aiding social integration. This is of particular value to those who are
most excluded from the labour market, such as recent migrants or people with disabilities.
But while the benefits of volunteering are clear, there is worrying evidence that the people
who could benefit most from giving their time are precisely those least likely to be involved.
There are many reasons for people not to volunteer. For older people, the barriers can
include poor health, poverty, lack of skills, poor transport links, or having caring
responsibilities, such as looking after grandchildren. Younger people can be deterred by
feeling they don’t have the time to volunteer, or not knowing anyone else who volunteers.
Many of them also think volunteering is just for older people with time on their hands.
Volunteering has an image problem – particularly with men and younger people.
More should be done to promote the value of volunteering to the particular needs of
different groups. There is evidence of why people choose to volunteer, and we need to make
better use of that information. For instance, a recent survey showed that 95% of young people,
aged 13-24, hoped to develop new skills through volunteering, compared to just 32% of
volunteers aged over 55. Almost three-quarters of young people were keen to gain
qualifications through volunteering compared to just 13% of those over 55. Over three-
quarters of disabled volunteers were keen to develop new skills and nearly two-thirds hoped
to improve their health and wellbeing through volunteering.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
Finnish education is of high quality. Differences in the learning results of different schools
are small and nearly all students complete comprehensive school within the target time.
Preschool education, comprehensive education and upper secondary education are free of
charge and also higher education is for the most part free of charge. The goal is for everyone
to have an equal opportunity to receive high-quality education regardless of the family’s
income and to grow up to become active citizens.
In Finland, children must attend preschool education for one year before compulsory
education begins. Preschool education usually starts during the year when the child turns six.
Municipalities organize preschool education and it is free of charge for families. It is usually
organized from Monday to Friday, four hours a day. During the preschool year, children learn
skills that are useful in school, such as letters. They are not, however, taught how to read. If
the child’s native language is not Finnish or Swedish, he or she will receive support in learning
Finnish or Swedish. A preschool day also includes playtime and outdoor activities.
Comprehensive education normally starts during the year when the child turns seven. All
children residing in Finland permanently must attend comprehensive education. The
comprehensive school comprises nine grades. Compulsory education ends when the child has
completed the entire comprehensive education syllabus or when ten years have passed since
the beginning of compulsory education. Finnish legislation guides comprehensive education.
National curriculum bases and local curriculums are also in use. Children often have the same
teacher for the first six years. The teacher gets to know the students well and is able to develop
the tuition to suit their needs. One important goal is that the students learn how to think for
themselves and assume responsibility for their own learning.
The most common options after comprehensive school are upper secondary school and
vocational education. They are considered upper secondary education. Upper secondary
education is usually free-of-charge for the students. However, they must purchase their own
books and other learning materials.
