• The floor in front of the door/doors of the autoclave must be flat and
level within an area as shown in the diagram above. When installing
several autoclaves that are to be served by a common loader, the
width of this area must be the same as that of the entire installation.
These requirements, and others such as those relating to floor
loading, are specified in more detail on the installation drawing.
• Autoclaves installed in wall openings should be connected to the
wall in order to separate the sterile and non-sterile sides. GETINGE

markets an ancillary system that covers the wall opening. If this is
not used, the edges of the opening must be smoothed off and
enclosed in a hygienically appropriate manner.
Find out the central point of gravity when lifting and trans-
porting a packed or not packed sterilizer thereby avoiding
serious accidents.
Unpacking
• Check when unpacking the apparatus that the order No. of its data
plate conforms with the ordering No. of the documents.
• Check that the sterilizer is faultless. Any transportation damage
should be reported within seven days to the transport company that
was responsible for delivery.
• Do not remove the protective plastic film from stainless steel panels
until the installation is completed.
• There is certain equipment such as expendable items, control unit,
operating instruction and list of programs by-packed the sterilizer
inside the chamber. The two latter are to be posted where easily
observed by the operator at work.
Please note that those articles are adapted for each steri-
lizer. When unpacking more than one sterilizer the articles
are not to be interchanged.
Internal transport
Does not apply to SPF autoclaves
Transport
The lower stand frame of the autoclave has a floor clearance of 100
mm. This is to enable the autoclave to be transported by a fork lift

attaching from either the left or the right-hand side after the side panels
have been removed.
Never lift the unit using the lower attachment of the door
operating cylinder.

If the junction box is to be swivelled, electric cables to pumps and any
power cables to the steam generator must be disassembled from the
junction box.
If the width has to be reduced further, the outlet with silencer, safety
valve and pressure transducer can be disassembled. The width of the
autoclave then becomes max. 900 mm.
In the case of autoclave HS 6606-2, the pump unit must also be
disassembled to reduce the width to 970 mm. However, this autoclave
is only 1010 mm long and it is therefore most appropriate to transport it
transversely.
Autoclaves with a cabinet are 1115 mm wide and 2020 mm high. The
whole cabinet must be disassembled to reduce height and width.
Storage
The sterilizer should be stored in a temperature between 2 and 40 °C and
at a maximum relative humidity 95% (not condensating).
Installation
• Place the sterilizer close to but never over a drain. Leave a well sized
clearance space on both sides for good operation and easy and safe
maintenance of the equipment. The back of the sterilizer may if nec-
essary come up close to a wall. See also appropriate diagrams and
drawings.
• Arrange for escape distances, as directed from labour safety point of
view, to be contained.
• Replace the bolts that served as feet during transport with the feet
supplied with the unit (delivered in the chamber).
• Adjust the legs so that the bottom of the chamber is level in both
dimensions, checking at the same time that the prescribed loader
height is maintained. See also the instructions on the installation
drawing for the particular sterilizer concerned.

Connection
• Find out the connection points and connection data of the steriliser
by studying the installation drawings.
• Pay attention to local regulations.
• Remove impurities by blowing through all pipes to be connected to
the sterilizer.
• Insulate hot pipes.
• Mark pipes and electrical leads.
Electric power
The components of the autoclave control unit will tolerate supply line
voltage variations of +5 -10%. If greater deviations occur, it is
recommended that a voltage stabilizer is connected between the
automatic fuse of the control system and the control equipment. As the
stabilizer is largely loaded with an inductive load, it is recommended
that it is amply oversized (minimum 500 VA). The frequency deviation
may amount to ±1%.

ESD (Electrostatic discharge)
ESD damage
ESD is an overall term describing how electronic circuits are damaged
by the static charging to which they are exposed when they come into
contact with electrically charged objects. Virtually all non-earthed
objects in the world around us have a static charge. Equipment and peo-
ple are imperceptibly charged by friction in the air or between shoes and
floor in ordinary walking. This charge is transferred to the electronic
circuits when they are touched.
Any damage that occurs to the electronics may be difficult to detect
and trace. It varies from immediate destruction of a circuit so that it no
longer works at all to insidiously affecting operation so that perform-
ance is not maintained. The circuits may even appear to be undamaged
and then later disintegrate inexplicably.
Most replacements of electronic boards where the fault cannot be
explained and is blamed on uneven quality are probably due to ESD
damage.
Practical requirements
• Keep electronic boards only in screened and ESD-approved
(marked) bags.
• Use ESD pads connected to earth in accordance with the manufac-
turer’s instructions to hold disassembled or new electronic boards
during assembly work.
566 25 30 Rev 00
7
• Do not touch electronic boards with tools that may be charged, e.g.
screwdrivers with a plastic or wooden handle. Use earthed tools if
necessary.
• Always use an ESD wrist band connected to earth in accordance with
the manufacturer’s instructions when working in the electronic
enclosure or when handling boards.
• Newer keep foreign objects such as drawings or plastic pockets
inside the electronic box.
• Test the ESD protective equipment regularly.

Water
HARDNESS
In order to minimise the sterilizer service and maintenance costs, the
water hardness should not exceed 4 dH (0.7 mmol/l). A water softener
is recommended if the water is harder than this.
566 25 30 Rev 00
9
Cooling water to the heat exchanger
The requirements in respect of temperature and hardness of the cooling
water are the same as those for the water to the vacuum pump if the
intended process performance is to be achieved. Again, on certain mod-
els, it is possible to modify the equipment to suit tropical conditions.
Only a part of these substances will pass over to the steam. As more
water, containing further quantities, is constantly pumped into the steam
generator, the concentration of such substances in the water will gradu-
ally increase. Practical experience shows that this concentration can
increase by up to ten times after 1-2 weeks’ operation. As a result, the
steam generator needs to be maintained and emptied more frequently if
the water quality is poorer.
The EN285 sterilizer standard gives guide values for evaporation res-
idues in treated water. These values can serve as a guide when assessing
566 25 30 Rev 00
10
the water quality, although it is not essential to comply with them in
order to ensure reliable operation.
In principle, there are three main types of feed water that are likely to
be encountered.
Raw water
Untreated water taken directly from the mains should be used in the
steam generator only if its quality is very high. The minimum require-
ments that should be accepted in this respect are as follows:
Softened water
If the quality of the raw water is good, apart from a hardness in excess
of 4 °dH, softened water can be used. Softening replaces the calcium
and magnesium ions with sodium. Sodium is not precipitated as a
“lime” coating in the steam generator, which is the whole purpose of
softening. However, softening does not sufficiently affect other sub-
stances that may be in the water, and so cannot be regarded as a suitable
method of improving the quality in general.
A drawback of softening is that the concentration of alkaline carbon-
ate in the water increases more than is desirable. This subsequently
566 25 30 Rev 00
11
forms gases in the steam, degrading the quality of the sterilization
steam. As a result, even when using softened water, a build-up of con-
centration in the water must be avoided through regular emptying.
De-ionised water
All salts are removed from de-ionised water, which is produced either
in an ion exchange filter or by reverse osmosis. The resulting water is
very suitable for steam generation, but must not be used as cooling
water or in the vacuum pump as the materials in the two latter systems
are not suited to its use.
Certain rules of thumb must be observed when using de-ionised feed
water.
When using an ion exchange filter:
• The ion exchange filter should not be preceded by a softening stage,
as the softened water reduces the efficiency of the ion exchange fil-
ter.
• Certain substances can destroy ion exchange filters, and so the input
water should not contain higher concentrations than shown below:
Iron 05 mg/l
Manganese 0.02 mg/l
Free chlorine (after chlo- 0.05 mg/l
rination of the water)

Common water supply to the sterilizer and steam generator
In its standard version, the steam generator is supplied with water from
the single common connection to the sterilizer, which means that values
of temperature and hardness are the same for all the water-using equip-
ment.
The water must always be colourless, with no solid contaminants such
as sand, flakes of rust, graphite etc. The concentrations of other sub-
stances may vary, as previously described, while the temperature should
be suited to the requirements of the vacuum pump sealing water.
Temperature
If a special supply and tank are provided for the steam generator feed
water, the temperature of the water should not exceed 60 °C.
566 25 30 Rev 00
13
Steam generators based upon evaporation from high pressure hot
water should not be used since the steam produced is of inferior quality
for sterilization purposes.
Cleanness
1. Solid particles such as welding pellets, graphite, rust flakes, sand
etc. must not be found since the steam comes in physical contact
with the goods to be sterilized.
2. Liquids, except very small amounts of water, must not occur for the
same reason.
3. Gases will prevent a close contact between the steam and the micro-
organisms and should be minimized as below.
· Hydrazine (N2H4) max. 0,11 mg/kg steam.
· Ammonia (NH3) max 5 mg/kg steam.
· Air and/or non-condensable gases max 7 ml per 200 ml conden-
sate, formed by the steam-air/gas mixture.
Analysis of condensate
An analysis of the condensate from the steam gives an idea about its
cleanness regarding additional agents. These should not occur in con-
centrations exceeding the values given in mg/kg condensate in the table
below.

Pressure
A GETINGE high pressure steam sterilizers should be supplied with
steam, the pressure of which should be 2.5 to 2.7 bar when indicated
by the sterilizer pressure gauge marked Steam supply.
Moisture content
Sterilizers should be supplied with dry saturated steam. The physical
state “dry saturated” is difficult to maintain in a practical application,
and measurement followed by control of the moisture content is an awk-
ward procedure.
Practising the advice later given which are based upon practical expe-
rience, will generally result in a steam with satisfactory moisture con-
tent. This means that nor will it be superheated, a state of the steam
which is hazardous in connection with sterilization because it does not
contribute with the humidification necessary for destructing microor-
ganisms.
Methods and values for determining the quality of the steam and the
degree of superheating are described in standard EN285.
Practical arrangements
1. Connect the sterilizer to a live steam line, not to an inadequately
drained or inadequately vented “dead leg”. Long branch connec-
tions to sterilizers should be avoided.
2. Dimension the piping for a steam velocity of 38 m/s at the pressure
250 kPa. If several sterilizers are connected to the same pipe, calcu-
late with a simultaneity factor 0.8.
3. The steam supply pipes should fall minimum 1:50 in the flow direc-
tion.
4. Introduce reducing valve(s) in the supply line if the pressure is
higher than specified in the installation drawing. The steam pres-
sure upstream the reducing valve should not fluctuate more than
566 25 30 Rev 00
15
10%. Do not reduce the pressure with a factor smaller than 0,5 in
each stage. Use a second reducing valve for greater reduction ratio.
Each reducing valve must be followed by a safety valve.
The safety valve exhaust pipe should have at least the same dimen-
sion as the valve exhaust connection and must not contain chokes
or shut off devices. Water pockets formed in the piping, must be
drained.
5. There must be no chokes or restrictions placed in horizontal pipes.
6. Fit the last reducing valve not more than 6 m pipe length away from
the sterilizer, but not closer than 4 m if maximum reducing ratio
(2:1) is utilized.
7. The last dewatering device (see figure below) should not be placed
further than 1 meter away from the sterilizer steam intake.
8. No steam consumers other than sterilizers should be connected
down-streams the last reducing valve.
9. Branch pipes should be connected on top of horizontal main pipe.
10. A connection should be provided between reducing valve and ster-
ilizer on the steam supply line to enable sampling steam for quality
check up.
11. Because of its daily use, the shut off valve should be of the easy-to-
handle type for instance a remote controlled ball valve.
12. Insulate steam pipes up to the sterilizer steam intake

Stem for sterilizers with built-in pure steam
generator
Autoclaves with built-in steam generator are intended to be connected
to a central steam production plant. The steam must withstand a pres-
sure of 6 bar ±0.1.
Practical arrangements
1. Connect the autoclave steam generator to a line in which steam is
consumed continuously. Long branch connections to autoclaves
should be avoided.
2. Dimension the piping for a steam velocity of 25 m/s at the pressure
6.0 bar. If several autoclaves are connected to the same line, calcu-
late with a simultaneity factor of 0.8.
3. The steam supply lines should fall a minimum of 1:50 in the flow
direction.
4. Introduce reducing valve(s) in the supply line if the pressure is
higher than specified in the installation drawing. The steam pres-
sure upstream of the reducing valve should not fluctuate more than
10%.
Do not reduce the pressure by a factor of less than 0.5 in one step.
Use several steps if greater pressure reduction is required. Each
reducing valve must be followed by a safety valve.
The safety valve exhaust pipe must have at least the same dimen-
sions as the valve exhaust connection and must not contain chokes
or shut-off devices. Water pockets formed in the piping must be
drained.

Compressed air
Branch pipe from over head line should go out from the top of the main
pipe as shown by the illustration. A shut-off valve, a strainer and a
check valve should be installed in the pressurized air supply line close
to the sterilizer, while a pressure gauge is recommended for easy super-
vision of the supply system.
• Connect the sterilizer air supply input to the building compressed air
supply line which should be capable of delivering clean air free from
oil water and particles of minimum 6, maximum 8 bar.
2 5
566 25 30 Rev 00
21
position outside the building. In some countries, the pressure vessel reg-
ulations require this to be done.
Drain
Sterilizers equipped with more than one waste water connection should
have all these piped separately to the floor gutter.
Check if there are any local regulations regarding the drain arrange-
ments, (formaldehyde or gas residuals in the water, temperature limits,
etc.).
Drains from the sterilizer are run through separate pipes, for contam-
inated and non-contaminated water respectively. The contaminated
water must always be discharged directly to drain.
• Run the drain pipe(s) with a slope towards the floor drain, where it/
they must terminate at a distance of at least two pipe diameters above
the highest water level of the water trap, but at least 20 mm above the
water level. Pipes shorter than 1.5 m require only very slight slope.
• The capacity of the waste water system must comply with current
regulations. The technical data for the sterilizer gives values of the
566 25 30 Rev 00
22
design parameters to be used when calculating design flows for hos-
pital environments. These calculations must be made in accordance
with national regulations. Normally, after calculation of the design
flow rate, the system capacity shall be increased by a further 50 %.
• Floor drains must have an opening of not less than 200 mm diameter,
as the number of drain pipes can be as high as seven from certain
models.
• Dimension the sewerage for short duration temperatures about
100 °C..
• The discharge pipe from a steam generator should be fixed at its open
end which should be at least 0,5 m pipe length away from the dis-
charge valve.
• Arrange if possible for cooling the discharge pipe when emptying the
steam generator in order to avoid steaming and noise in the room.
However, this is not essential if the steam generator is fitted with a
device for automatic venting.
Ventilation
Using the values for heat release given in the technical specification, the
ambient temperature around the sterilizer must be regulated to 15-35 °C
by means of a suitable ventilation system. If possible, relative humidity
should not exceed 85 %.
These requirements apply not only to the service area of the apparatus
but also to the operator zones.
566 25 30 Rev 00
23
Checking by authorities
The user of the sterilizer must, on installing the unit, inform the appro-
priate authorities that this has been done and also comply with local
restrictions on the connection of water, drainage and ventilation. There
are often local restrictions on connection to the drinking-water mains,
on how wastewater is to be treated and how ventilation is to be arranged.
This is particularly important when installing sterilizers for formalin
sterilization or ethylene oxide sterilization as limit values for emissions
may have to be complied with.
