Good morning class! It is nice to see you all Good morning, Sir!
again today.
Before we formally start our class let us all
pray and put ourselves in the presence of
the Lord.
Please arrange your chairs and pick up the
pieces of paper under.
A. ENGAGE/RECALL
Last meeting, we discussed about the parts of
the periodic table of elements and the
different families.
(Student raise their hand)
Can anyone tell me what does the columns The columns are called Groups and rows are
and rows of a periodic table called? called Periods.
We also identified the names of the groups Yes sir.
right?
Who can share to me the names of the Group I is named the alkali metals, group II is
groups? named as alkaline earth metals, group 3 to group
12 are the transition elements, group 17 is the
halogens, group 18 are the noble gases. The
other groups are named after the first element in
their column, therefore group 13 is called as the
group boron, group 14 is group carbon, group 15
is group nitrogen and group 16 is the group
oxygen. The lower rows are called the
lanthanides and actinides.
Very good! Last meeting we have discussed
about these things mentioned. We have
discussed that groups or families are the 18
vertical columns. The elements are arranged
in seven horizontal rows and we call them
periods or series.
Exactly! Last meeting, during our group
activity we have color coded the periodic
table. Do you still remember the legends or We have color coded the elements based on what
what each color stands for? type of elements they belong. They can either
Yes (name of the student) belong to metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
Very good! It seems like you have clearly
understood the discussion last meeting. Today
we are going to be discussing about the
metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
B. EXPLORE
Now, here on the board are pictures of
different elements. What you are going to do
is to identify and group these elements based
on their types. You can use the short
descriptions of each type of element as a
guide. I will call students randomly to come
to the board and paste the pictures. Any None Sir.
questions or clarifications about the activity?
Okay if there is none, let’s start our activity.
Do not make any unnecessary noise if you
would like to answer, just raise your hand and
wait until you’re called.
Vertical rows:
Nonmetals are the elements on the right of the
periodic table. They are any material or substance
that is not pure metal. Nonmetals are dull in
appearance. They are poor conductors of heat and
electricity. Non-metals may be solids, liquids, or
gases at room temperature.
Metals are solid materials and are typically hard,
malleable (bendy), ductile (flexible), and heavy.
They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Metals are shiny and have a high density. They
can also be opaque as a thin sheet.
Metalloids is a chemical element that forms a
simple substance having properties intermediate
between those of a typical metal and a typical
nonmetal.

C. EXPLAIN
Well done everyone! Now we will check if
your answers are correct.
Today, we will be discussing nonmetals,
metals, and metalloids.
We can use the periodic table to identify the
known elements as metals, nonmetals, and
metalloids. A stair step line separates metals
and nonmetals.
Most of the elements on the left side of the Metals sir.
table are called what?
The nonmetals are confined to which side of Right side sir.
the table?
And the elements along the stair step line is Metalloids.
called what?
Very good everyone!
The seven elements commonly regarded as
metalloids or semimetals are boron, silicon,
germanium, arsenic, antimony, tellurium, and
polonium.
Let us look at the physical properties of
metals.
It includes;
Luster - shiny or sheen especially from
reflected light.
Malleability - quality of something that can be
shaped into something else without breaking.
Ductility - ability of a material to be drawn or
plastically deformed without fracture.
Conductivity - ability to conduct electricity
and heat.
Now let us check your activity here. Based on Yes sir.
the properties of metal, are the pictures you
placed in the table for metals correct?
(Student raise their hand)
Very good! Now let us go to nonmetals.
Anyone who would like to read the Nonmetals exist in all three states of matter;
description of nonmetals? Gases, Liquids, Solids. They are not able to
Yes please. conduct electricity or heat very well and have no
metallic luster. Non-metallic elements are very
brittle, and cannot be rolled into wires or
pounded into sheets.
Thank you very much. Under normal
conditions of temperature and pressure, some
non-metals are found as gases, some found as
solids and one is found as liquid. In contrast,
except mercury, all metals are solids at room
temperature. The fact that so many non-
metals exist as liquids or gases means that
non-metals generally have relatively low
melting and boiling points under normal
atmospheric conditions. In their solid-state,
non-metals tend to be brittle. Therefore, they
lack the malleability and ductility exhibited
by metals. (Student raise their hand)
Anyone who would like to read the Metalloids have a mixture of metallic and non-
Metalloids? metallic properties. They are considered to be
Yes please. semi-conductors that can conduct heat and
electricity to some extent.
Thank you very much, metalloids appear to
be metal in appearance, but are brittle.
They can generally form alloys with metals.
Some metalloids such as silicon and
germanium become electrical conductors
under special conditions. These are called
semiconductors. They are solids under
standard conditions. They are mostly Chlorine, carbon, and ammonia Sir.
nonmetallic in their chemical behavior.
Okay so based on these descriptions, what are
the pictures under non metals?
Very good! And the pictures under metalloids None Sir.
are boron and silicon.
Any questions about our lesson class?
Okay if there are none, please arrange your
chairs and review the lessons from last
meeting up to now because we will have an
activity.
D. ELABORATE
Okay everyone, I will ask you to remain
seated with your group. The secretary must
write the name of the members in a ¼ sheet of
paper. In this activity, I will be asking you Yes Sir.
questions and giving you multiple choices of
answers through this cards. I will read the
question and you will just raise the card that
you think is the correct answer. Am I
understood?
(Students are moving towards their groups)
You may now seat with your groups. Again
you don’t have to form a circle, but instead
just seat with your own groups.
I’ll only give you 10 seconds. (10, 9, 8,
….1,0).
Before we start, please write now the names
in a ¼ sheet of paper. I’ll only give you 30
seconds to write.
You may now start.
Time is up. Submit now the paper to me.
Thank you.
Here is the catch for our activity. I will be
numbering your names from 1-6. Therefore,
within your group will have a similar number.
I have here a dice. Whichever number will it Yes sir.
lands, the paired students with that number
will go here in front to answer the questions.
In every correct answer will earn a point.
Did you understand the instruction?
Okay let us now begin. Yes sir.
First test will be true or false. Just raise the
corresponding card of your choice when you TRUE
answer. I will be reading the question twice
only, you have to raise the card as soon as I
say go. Am I understood?
FALSE
Henry Mosely is an English physicist who
discovered that the atomic number is the most
fundamental property of an element and not TRUE
its atomic mass.
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev discovered the FALSE
Döbereiner’s triads.

is called as Alkaline Earth Metals.

7 groups and 18 periods.

horizontal rows are called as groups.
Okay everyone, good job! For this next set of
questions, I will be reading out loud the
characteristic and you will identify if that
characteristic belongs to metals, nonmetals,
and metalloids. Just raise the corresponding Yes Sir.

learned something today. Check the
alignment of your chairs and settle down.
