GYÖRGY BÉKÉSY
Acoustician, biophysicist (3 June 1899 – 13 June 1972)

Best known for his research on the function of the cochlea in the mammalian hearing
organ, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1961.

JÁNOS HARSÁNYI
Economist, philosopher (29 May 1920 – 9 August 2000)

Best known for his contributions to the study of game theory and its application in
economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994.

GYÖRGY HEVESY
Chemist (1 August 1885 – 5 July 1966)

Played a key role in the development of radioactive tracers to study chemical pro-
cesses, awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1943.

FÜLÖP LÉNÁRD
Physicist (7 June 1862 – 20 May 1947)

Best known for his researches on cathode rays, awarded the Nobel Prize for
Physics in 1905.

ALBERT SZENT-GYÖRGYI
Biochemist (16 September 1893 – 22 October 1986)

Best known for his discoveries related to the biological combustion process with
special reference to vitamin C. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine in 1937.

LÁSZLÓ LOVÁSZ
Mathematician (9 March 1948 – )

Professor of the Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Eötvös Loránd Uni-


versity. President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2014. Former pro-
fessor of Yale University, Department of Computer Science (1993–2000).

Best known for his research in combinatorial optimization, graph theory and
theoretical computer science. Member of the European Academy of Sciences, Arts
and Humanities (1981), Academia Europaea (1991), Deutsche Akademie der Na-
turforscher Leopoldina (2002), Russian Academy of Sciences (2006), The Royal
Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2006), Royal Swedish Academy of
Sciences (2007), National Academy of Sciences of the US (2012). Corresponding
member of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der
Künste (1993), honorary member of the London Mathematical Society (2009).

He was awarded the Brouwer Medal (1993), the Wolf Prize (1999), the Knuth
Prize (1999), and the Kyoto Prize (2010).
CULTURE

EÖTVÖS ART ENSEMBLE


Béla Bartók Choir, Folk Dance Group, University Orchestra
The three groups of the Eötvös Art Ensemble (Béla Bartók Choir, University Orchestra and Folk
Dance Group; founded in 1948 and 1957) are well-known and popular ensembles in the non-profes-
sional musical and cultural life in Hungary. Members of the groups are amateur singers, musicians
and dancers, primarily current and former Hungarian and international students and academic and
non-academic staff of ELTE.

BOTANICAL GARDEN

The first Hungarian Botanical Garden was founded in 1771 by the predecessor of Eötvös Loránd
University. The arboretum, with its 800 species of trees and bushes and 500 types of floral plants, is
well worth a visit.

BIOLOGICAL AND PALEONTOLOGICAL MUSEUM

This university collection – which is unique in Hungary – exemplifies the evolution of mankind and
the fauna with relevant paleontological materials, full body products and anatomy.
MINERAL AND ROCK COLLECTION

The Collection was established in 1774. It is the oldest collection of scientific artefacts of the uni-
versity and the biggest such collection in Hungary. At the end of the 18th century, it was the biggest
collection systematically organised for educational purposes in Europe.

NATURE RESERVE AND OPEN-AIR GEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF TATA

This special geological nature reserve was established on a 3.5 acre plot on Kálvária Hill in Tata
in 1953. It has also functioned as an open-air geological museum since 1991. The nature reserve
displays the geological eras, flora and fauna of millions of years, as well as curiosities of botanical,
cultural and mining history.

GOTHARD ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY

The University Observatory – founded in 1881 – is a modern research and educational centre. The
exhibition in the observatory displays the achievements of a new science which blossomed the 19th
century through the original tools and works of the founder, Jenő Gothard.

ELTE OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES FOR


CURRENT AND FORMER ELTE STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES.
ELTE students can take sports courses for credit; they can choose among the training programmes offe-
red by the Budapest University Athletics Club (BEAC), or they can participate in mass sports events
organized throughout the year.

ELTE SUCCESS AT INTERNATIONAL SPORTS EVENTS

Seven ELTE students and one ELTE alumnus participated in the Rio 2016 Olympics. The swimmer Bog-
lárka Kapás won a bronze medal in the Women’s 800-metre Freestyle event. Áron Szilágyi became the fifth
fencer in the history of the modern Olympic Games since 1896 to win back-to-back individual gold medals.

Csaba Burján was a member of the relay team that won a gold medal in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic
Games in 2018 in speed skating, and he also set a 5,000-metre world record at the ISU World Cup Speed
Skating event organised in Calgary in 2018.
