Background

You will be assigned a company and a topic for this assessment. Your task is to act as a business
consultant specialising in the assigned topic, recruited by the assigned company. Your role involves
conducting research on the company, the allocated topic, and any issue(s) identified in the media that are
relevant to your company and the topic. Based on your research findings, you will develop
recommendation(s) for an alternative process that your client could adopt to address the issue.

NOTE: Students are not to contact the companies they have been allocated.

WSU Autumn 2024
Assessment 3 - Presentation, Report and Reflection
BUSM1008 Enterprise Leadership
Business consultants are experts in their field of practice. To become an expert in your field of practice
(i.e., assigned topic), you will need to complete the relevant online learning material, as well as the
readings and resources available on vUWS.

To identify an issue(s) that your allocated company is currently facing, it is important to utilise current
media sources. As a consultant, your recommendation(s) should not be based on what the company is
already doing, but rather focus on areas where you believe the company can improve. It is crucial to
provide useful, relevant, and accurate sources to justify your claims. Failure to provide sufficient
justification may impact the logical flow of your ideas and mark.

Recommended approach to this assessment:

1. Start by reviewing the online learning materials, readings, and resources available for your
assigned topic.
2. Begin the discovery phase by researching background information about the company you have
been allocated.
3. Continue the discovery phase by reading current media articles and identifying issue(s) that are
relevant to your assigned topic.
4. Continue researching to find recommendation(s) that the allocated company can implement to
improve and address the identified issue(s).
5. Compile your findings in a report and presentation. A minimum of 8 references from scholarly
and non-scholarly sources is required for this assessment.
6. Reflect on your experience completing this assessment and working as a consultant.

Typically, business consultants complete a consulting project and then communicate their work back to the
decision-makers in the company they have been recruited to consult for. This is usually done through a
brief presentation and a more detailed report.

Sources of Data for your research:

Students are encouraged to use as many resources as needed to achieve a great outcome in this
assessment. The requirement of 8 scholarly and non-scholarly references is a minimum requirement.

In addition to the subject readings, students must use peer-reviewed articles, business databases and
relevant media sources.

Company annual reports should not be seen as the sole source of information; your research should use
other sources such as Factiva (e.g. articles from the [Australian] Financial Review) and IBIS (which
provides reports on companies) - both of which are available through e-resources on the WSU Library site.

Other sources such as the ASX company information and announcements database etc. could be useful for
specific presentation topics.

A Library Hunt activity will be completed in class to guide the development of your Data Collection
Progress Report will be undertaken in Week 7.

Putting Together this Assessment

Part 1a: Individual presentations (5-minute presentation, grade weighting 20%)

You are required to record a 5-minute presentation that is suitable for executive-level decision-makers in
your assigned company. This presentation will serve as your opportunity to explain what you have
accomplished in your consulting project. It should include key information about the company, the topic,
the identified issue(s), and your recommendation(s).

When preparing their presentation slides, students are required to follow the exemplar template.

2
WSU Autumn 2024
Assessment 3 - Presentation, Report and Reflection
BUSM1008 Enterprise Leadership

The presentation needs to be recorded in Zoom, and it should include presentation slides along with video
and audio of you presenting. Instructions on how to record a presentation in Zoom will be provided during
tutorials.

Students must adhere to the 5-minute time limit for their presentations. Going over or under the time limit
by more than 10% will affect the overall mark received. This requirement reflects real-world business
presentations.

Practice your presentation. Reading from the screen during your presentation will impact the mark you
receive. The best results will be achieved through consistent and rigorous rehearsal of both the material
and timing. Additional instruction on presenting will be provided during tutorials.

If you fail to present, a zero mark will be recorded for that presentation.

For additional resources to assist you in completing presentations, reports, and reflections, please consult
Study Smart’s how-to assessment guides.

Part 1a (presentation) is to be submitted to the Assessment 3 Presentation Submission Link in vUWS.

Part 1b: written report (700 words, grade weighting 10%)

You are tasked with writing a 700-word report that is suitable for presentation to executive-level decision-
makers in your assigned company. This report will provide a more detailed account of the work completed
in your consulting project than the presentation. It will include all the sections outlined in the exemplar
template provided below.

Executives from your assigned company will utilise the information and recommendations provided in
your report to make informed decisions. In order for these decisions to be sound, it is crucial that your
report is based on accurate information and reliable analysis. It is essential to demonstrate the accuracy and
reliability of your report, as well as the justification behind your recommendations. Therefore, it is
important to ensure a logical flow from the literature review and discussion to the recommendations.

Students must adhere to the 700-word limit for their report. Any report that exceeds or falls short of the
word count by more than 10% will have an impact on the overall mark received. This requirement reflects
real-world business reports.

Part 1b and Part 2 (written document) is to be submitted to the Assessment 3 Written Report Turnitin link.

Part 2: Self-reflection (300 words, grade weighting 10%) The purpose of the reflective component of
the assessment serves two main objectives. Firstly, it enables you to reflect on your experience as a
consultant. Secondly, this reflection encourages you to contemplate the aspects of delivering verbal
presentations to larger audiences and the growth of public speaking skills.

The aim of reflection is to help you gain insight into your strengths and weaknesses in a professional
environment.

To complete your reflection please do the following:

– Your reflection starts with an awareness of the learning situation or event. This awareness might
trigger some emotional reaction (positive or negative) or thoughts about the learning event.
– The second stage of the process is to undertake a critical analysis. This involves critically
analysing the relevant knowledge and experience you have as well as how you can apply this new
knowledge. Self-awareness becomes the focus of this stage.
– The third stage relates to how this changed perspective has changed your emotional, cognitive
(thoughts) and behaviour as a result of your critical analysis.

Assessment 3 - Presentation, Report and Reflection
BUSM1008 Enterprise Leadership

The main objective of reflective writing is to “translate theory into practical action, that is, a praxis” (Loo
& Thorpe 2002, p.135).

Include Part 2: Self-reflection under the relevant heading in the written document. Part 1b and Part 2
(written document) is to be submitted to the Assessment 3 Written Report Turnitin link.
