ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

For SCIENCE Grade 10

Quarter 2/Week 1

1
FOREWORD

This Self Learning-Kit is designed to help you understand

electromagnetic waves (EM). EM waves are produced as a result of
vibrations between an electric field and magnetic field.

In this learning kit, you will know the relationship between

electric field and magnetic field. A changing magnetic field
produces electric field and a changing electric field produces a
magnetic field. As well as the basic types of electromagnetic waves.

In this SLK you will learn Electromagnetic Waves which focus not
only on the science concepts, principles, and theories, but on its link
to how important it is to your day-to-day activities and how it will
affect you and your lifestyle.

2
Objectives
K – Describe electromagnetic wave.
S – State the different types of electromagnetic waves
using the EM spectrum.
A – Appreciate the consequential effects of
electromagnetic waves on living things.

Learning Competency

Infrared waves

C. Identification. Identify the type of electromagnetic wave used in each

application. Write your answer in your notebook.

1. Radar
2. Medical treatment
3. Medical diagnosis
4. Remote controls
5. Radio and Television communication

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Did you send text messages to somebody today? Are you familiar with an
X-ray machine? These questions have something to do with Electromagnetic
waves. But, what are electromagnetic waves? Are they useful to us?

Electromagnetic waves are waves that are created as a result of

vibrations between an electric field and magnetic field. A changing magnetic
field produces electric field and a changing electric field produces a magnetic
field.

DISCUSSION

Types of Electromagnetic Waves

1. Radio Waves – radio waves have the longest wavelength in the

electromagnetic spectrum. They are produced when the electrons vibrate in
an antenna. They are used to transmit sound and picture information over
long distances.

2. Microwaves – microwaves have smaller wavelengths than radio waves. They

are used in satellite communications, radar, television, transmission and
cooking.

3. Infrared – infrared radiation lies beyond the red end of the visible light. It is
emitted by all objects. Our bodies radiate infrared that the image appears in
variety of colors depending on the difference in temperature.

7
4. The visible Spectrum – When light passes through a prism, it is separated into
its constituent colors: the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
Red color has the longest wavelength from among these colors and violet
has the shortest.

5. Ultraviolet radiation – ultraviolet radiation lies just beyond the violet end of
the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet waves have shorter wavelengths than the
visible light and carry more energy.

6. X – Ray – X–ray come just after the ultraviolet rays. They are of shorter
wavelength but carries higher energy than the UV. X-rays are produced using
an X-ray tube. They are emitted when fast moving electrons hit a metal
target.

7. Gamma Rays – Gamma rays lie at the other end of the electromagnetic
spectrum. They are shortest in wavelength and highest in frequency that
carry the highest energy, thus are more dangerous. They are very strong and
can kill living cells, also used to treat cancer through the process called
radiotherapy.
