Key Selection Criteria

Certificate IV in Local Government or equivalent or demonstrated knowledge and skills gained

through on-the-job training in a customer service role, preferably in compliance/enforcement field.

I have completed a Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation, and a Certificate IV in Government
through Warner Institute. I also have some background knowledge in Veterinary Medicine whilst
studying my 2nd year at James Cook University. This includes, animal handling, animal breeds and
diseases.
In the overall 3 years that I have worked for in various councils; Mornington Peninsula Shire Council,
Maroondah City Council, and currently City of Greater Dandenong Council, I have developed knowledge
and skills relevant to Local Government through on-the-job training as a Local Law Officer and as a
Ranger. These skills and knowledge are not limited to but include, being able to defuse conflict,
exceptional time management and exercising relevant legislation and procedures.

Demonstrated effective communication skills, including the ability to influence others to achieve
positive outcomes, particularly with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

In working more than 5 years in retail and over 3 years in local government, strong communication skills
have been essential to the industry. I have dealt with a wide range of customers and clients, including
the elderly, parents, children, and people of different backgrounds. As a sales assistant, I was able to
tailor my communication skills to the customer’s needs and provide excellent service that would
ultimately lead to a closing sale. Also, my time working with the City of Greater Dandenong Council,
learning a second language has been beneficial to the job as clients were able to comply to government
legislation without having a language barrier.

Demonstrated ability to act independently in resolving minor problems often involving disputation or
interpersonal conflict, by the use of advocacy and conflict resolution skills.

Whilst studying at university, there had been many group assessments assigned throughout the year
and as such, there is usually conflict of ideas when addressing the assignment. In most cases, I would
take the initiative and communicate with the student who has conflicting ideas to the rest of the group.
In order to resolve the issue, I would keep an open mind and be respectful of the student's ideas and try
to compromise with the other students, by incorporating some of the ideas into the assessment.

Demonstrated commitment to serving the public and community and ability to work as a highly
effective member of a close knit team.

Over the last 3 years working with the City of Greater Dandenong as a Local Laws Officer, I have been
actively assisting customers with their complaints, ensuring the correct works is carried out. If the
council has not been receiving new complaints, I would proactively patrol an area to enforce local
government legislation for a safer community. On some occasions, I would communicate with my team
members to aid me with my jobs to ensure the safety of myself and the community, and in return I
would do the same if another team member required my assistance and reporting such occasions to the
team leader.

Demonstrated well developed oral & written communication skills including the ability to prepare
clear and concise written documentation, e.g. for later use in legal proceedings.

During my time at City of Greater Dandenong, oral and written communication skills has been essential.
I have compiled Local Law briefs and Animal Management briefs which needed to be clear and concise
to be presented to my team leader and prosecutor. I have also conducted interviews to question the
alleged offenders, and appointments with victims and witnesses for statement taking.

Demonstrated competency in using up to date technology (including software programs and mobile
devices) to complete Regulatory or Enforcement tasks or responsibilities.

I have always taken pride in myself as a person who is quite technology savvy. During my time with City
of Greater of Dandenong, I would find myself happily assisting my colleagues on how to use programs
and devices to allow better efficiency in completing regulatory or enforcement tasks or responsibilities.
