I - TRANSPONDER CONTROLLED ELECTRONIC ENGINE IMMOBILISER

The transponder controlled engine immobiliser system is used to

immobilise the vehicle by locking the engine management ECU.

The transponder incorporated into the key, which allows the key and the
BSI to recognise each other, contains an identification code for unlocking
the engine management ECU.

For system requirements, the switch module at the steering wheel

operates as a gateway between the transponder aerial and the BSI.

The switch module at the steering wheel performs the following functions:

• it energises the key transponder,

• it receives messages from the key for the BSI,

• it sends messages from the BSI to the key.

The BSI transmits the locking or unlocking requests to the engine

management ECU in order to authorise or prohibit starting of the
engine.

Note: The engine management ECU is locked 10 seconds after the ignition
is switched off in all cases.

J - AUTOMATIC HAZARD WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATION

The automatic hazard warning lamp illumination function improves safety

by automatically signalling emergency braking and accidents.

The automatic hazard warning lamp illumination function is controlled by

the BSI.

The speed and deceleration information combined with the driver

pressing the brake pedal allow the BSI, where necessary, to switch on the
hazard warning lamps automatically

BODYWORK

I- BODYWORK SPECIFICATIONS

A - STRUCTURE

C3P004D

B - BODY
The structure of this vehicle is designed to satisfy the most stringent
front and rear impact standards.
The structure consists of strengthened zones and crumple zones thus
limiting the risk of injury to the occupants.
The bodywork is totally new and is of hatchback type with tailgate.
The bodywork sits on a totally new sub-frame, taken from the C3, which is
being used as the basic platform for all B segment vehicles.
The bodywork is made from steel panels with high tensile steel and very
high tensile steel panels being used locally (windscreen pillar stiffener).
The body is assembled with 2802 spot welds whilst the rear floor is bond
welded.
The strengthening parts (chassis members, side members, cross
members) are made from thick steel plate (around 2 - 2.5 mm).
Variations: RH drive or LH drive.

Standard equipment:

• two front airbags,

• seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners and force limiter.

Two side head/thorax airbags in the front seats.

2 - Front airbags

Airbag volume:

• driver's airbag: 60 litres,

• passenger's airbag: 100 litres.

The driver's airbag is a high efficiency airbag with programmed tear

holes.

The passenger's airbag is located under the dashboard.

The passenger's airbag can be deactivated to allow a rear facing

child's seat to be fitted.

The passenger's airbag deactivation switch (1) is located on the side

of the dashboard on the passenger's side.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
51
Section 4

3 - Head/thorax type side airbags

The side airbags, which are designed to operate in the event of a side
impact, are incorporated into the driver's and passenger's seats.

The side airbags limit the risk of injury to the abdomen and thorax.

4 - Side airbag triggering sensors

The side airbag triggering sensors are located in the side members
on each side of the vehicle.

The two side airbag triggering sensors permanently measure the

lateral deceleration and transmit this information to the Airbag ECU.

5 - Seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners and force limiter

The pretensioners are designed to tension the front seat belts so as

to hold the body of the occupants firmly against the seat, thus
increasing their effectiveness.

The seat belts are tensioned by means of a pyrotechnic cartridge.

In the event of a slight impact, only the seat belts with pyrotechnic
pretensioner may be triggered (without the airbags).

The rear seat belts have force limiters to increase protection in the
event of a frontal impact by limiting the forces exerted by the seat
belt on the body.

II - SLIDING ROOF CONTROLS

The user controls the sliding roof using the 10 position rotating control (roof
control panel):

ROTATING CONTROL
SLIDING ROOF POSITION
POSITION
0 Roof closed
1-7 Sliding roof at intermediate open position
8 Sliding roof fully open
9 Sliding roof folded down onto rear screen

The sliding roof takes the following times to move:

• between position 0 and position 8: less than 10 seconds,
• between position 8 and position 9: less than 4 seconds.
Note: There is no anti-pinch function. The rotating control must be pressed and
held in position 0 to close the sliding roof.
Warning: If the sliding roof is moved manually (motor declutched), the
sliding roof ECU loses the position of the roof. There is a risk that
the sliding roof may then move to a non authorised position or
authorise the opening of the rear screen or the cassette with the
sliding roof between positions 8 and 9. It is essential to initialise
the sliding roof by pressing and holding the rotating control in
position 0 for approximately 30 seconds.

A - SLIDING ROOF ONE-TOUCH OPERATING CONTROLS

Moving the rotating control to one of the 10 preset positions (change of
status) is used to move the sliding roof to one of the predefined positions
(1 - 8).

B - CLOSING THE SLIDING ROOF

The sliding roof can be closed when the following 2 conditions are met:
• rotating control pressed and held in position 0,
• sliding roof between positions 1 and 0.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
74
Section 6

III - CONTROL OF THE SLIDING ROOF BY THE SLIDING ROOF ECU

A - SLIDING ROOF OPERATING CONDITIONS

The sliding roof ECU requests authorisation to operate the sliding roof
from the BSI via the BODY VAN 2 (see conditions below).

The sliding roof ECU informs the BSI of its initialisation status, the
locking status of the cassette on the arches and the status of the rear
screen.

ONE-TOUCH OPENING CONTROL OF THE SLIDING ROOF BETWEEN

POSITIONS 2 AND 9 ACTIVE
If Request to move the sliding roof to one of the positions 2 - 9
or
Request to move the sliding roof to the position selected by
the sliding roof rotating control (sliding roof position recall
request).
And Rear screen closed
And No rear screen opening request in progress
And Cassette locked on arches
And BSI not in economy mode
Then BSI sends authorisation to operate the sliding roof controls to
the sliding roof ECU (SCU)

ONE-TOUCH OPENING CONTROL OF THE SLIDING ROOF IN POSITION 1

ACTIVE
If Request to move the sliding roof to one of the positions 1 or 0
Or
Request to move the sliding roof to the position selected
(position 1 or 0) by the sliding roof rotating control (sliding
roof position recall request).
And Rear screen closed
And No rear screen opening request in progress
And Cassette locked on arches
And BSI not in economy mode
Then BSI sends authorisation to operate the sliding roof controls to
the sliding roof ECU (SCU)

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK

SLIDING ROOF CLOSING CONTROL BETWEEN POSITIONS 0 AND 1 BY

PRESSING AND HOLDING BUTTON
If Sustained request to close the sunroof
And Rear screen closed
And No rear screen opening request in progress
And Cassette locked on arches
And BSI not in economy mode
Then BSI sends authorisation to operate the sliding roof controls to
the sliding roof ECU (SCU)

Note: The sliding roof is not operational when the vehicle is in economy
mode.

B - STOWING THE SLIDING ROOF CASSETTE

The request to stow the cassette is taken into account if all of the
following conditions are met:
• sliding roof in position 9 (on the rear screen),
• rear screen closed and no screen opening request in progress.
If the position of the sliding roof is lost or if a doubt exists regarding the
opening status of the tailgate and the rear screen, the cassette cannot
be unlocked.

C - INITIALISING THE SLIDING ROOF

The sliding roof has to be initialised in the following cases:
• loss of sliding roof position,
• impossible to stow sliding roof cassette (with all conditions to unlock
cassette met),
• loss of battery supply during sliding roof movement.
The sliding roof is initialised:
• with the roof closed,
• with the rotating control in position 0,
• by pressing and holding the rotating control on the roof control panel
for a few seconds.
Note: If the sliding roof has not been initialised, it can only be closed.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
76
Section 6

D - DOWNGRADED MODES

If communications are lost on the VAN between the BSI and the sliding
roof ECU, movement of the roof is forbidden (the sliding roof
authorisation is considered to be absent). The current movement is
completed.

The BSI considers the position of the sliding roof to be invalid and sends
the roof open information to the air conditioning and alarm ECUs.

If the sliding roof is stopped between 2 positions following an operating

problem, movement of the sliding roof is not resumed when the problem
disappears.

II - RULES TO BE APPLIED WHEN ASSEMBLING BODY PANELS

A - RESISTANCE WELDING

Resistance welding is the main assembly method used for fabricating

steel bodies.

Resistance welding is the main assembly method to be used for repairs

(if possible).

Use the recommended weld spot diameter as a function of panel

thickness.

The setting values of resistance welding sets are the same, regardless of
panel type.

Zinc coated panels or those which are protected by a weldable coating

required a slightly higher current than that used for bare panels.

IMPORTANT: Torch welding and brazing are not permitted as

assembly solutions, regardless of panel type. If access is
impossible using resistance welding electrodes, use MIG
or MAG welding.

B - PROTECTION OF PANELS PRIOR TO WELDING

The internal surface of non coated panels must in all cases be protected
by a weldable primer before assembly. Use the recommended primers.

C - PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF PANELS

Use the cutting and assembly solutions recommended in the repair

procedures.

90
Section 8

IV - PARTS MADE FROM VERY HIGH STRENGTH STEEL (VHSS)

The steels used for fabricating very high strength steel parts are hardened
steels which cannot be machined with traditional bodywork tools.

A - UNDOING SPOT WELDS

Use carbide bits only which are specially ground for undoing spot welds.

Warning: Traditional bits used for undoing spot welds are not suitable
for VHSS panels (even when the welds are to be released
where a non VHSS panel is welded on top).

Note: If problems are experienced undoing the welds on the windscreen

pillar inner panel, (VHSS panel), remove them by grinding.

B - CUTTING PANELS

Use cutting discs only (no metal saws are able to cut this type of
material).

C - RESISTANCE WELDING

The diameters to be used for the spot welds are the same as for other
steels (except where stated otherwise).

Warning: As VHSS panels are very stiff, all necessary precautions must
be taken to ensure panels are correctly secured: use the
machine's highest possible clamping pressure.

D - BUTT WELDING

Assembly by laying a butt weld bead is prohibited, regardless of the

welding method (including MIG and MAG) due to the high loss of
strength in the heated area near to the bead.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
91
Section 8

E - PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF A VHSS PANEL

We recommend that the whole panel is replaced in all cases wherever

possible.

Partial replacement is only possible where reassembly includes a panel

overlap of 30 - 40 mm: panels must be assembled using two rows of
resistance spot welds.

F - STRAIGHTENING

VHSS panels cannot be cold straightened.

IMPORTANT: Straightening when hot or after annealing is strictly

forbidden as this leads to a loss of strength of AT LEAST
50%. This loss of strength is irreversible.

1 - Assembling

Assembling high strength steel panels using MAG, MIG or resistance

welding does not pose any particular problems.

2 - Straightening

High strength steel panels can be straightened in the same way as

ordinary steel panels.

IMPORTANT: Only hot straightening is forbidden as it creates a

local weak spot which may lead to failure, especially
on thick structural parts.

3 - Precautions to be taken

Only perform cold straightening operations.

Reform the exact shape, especially the angles and edges on

structural parts such as side members, chassis members, cross
members, etc (any folds, even very small ones, form a weak point).

IMPORTANT: The part must be replaced when these instructions

cannot be satisfied.

REPAIRING ALUMINIUM PARTS

I- GENERAL DETAILS

A - CLASSIFICATION OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS

Belonging to 8 families, there are many varied aluminium alloys which all
have different compositions, properties and uses.

Classes from 1000 - 8000: each manufacturer uses a reference

depending on which class and grade the alloy belongs to.

B - HARDENING METHOD

The following hardening methods can be used:

• shot peened alloys: classes 1000, 3000, 5000 and 8000,

• structurally hardened alloys: classes 2000, 4000, 6000 and 7000.

C - CLASSES OF ALUMINIUM USED FOR AUTOMOTIVE BODYWORK

PARTS

Structures: class 5000

External components: class 6000.

C5 bonnet:

• the outer panel is type 6016 aluminium: class 6000,

• the inner panel is type 5754 aluminium: class 5000.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
109
Section 12

II - STRAIGHTENING ALUMINIUM PANELS

A - RESHAPING
During reshaping operations, take precautions to prevent the metal from
extending which occurs much more easily on aluminium than on steel.
Do not use hard panel beating tools or those with sharp edges (steel
tools) but instead using tools made from soft materials (wood, plastic or
aluminium).
For aluminium, the straightening operation should start in the centre of
the distorted area (contrary to steel panels).

B - FLATTENING
During the flattening phase, use the dolly and mallet gently to avoid
stretching the metal.
Extended areas can be retracted locally by applying heat.
Warning: Maximum temperature for shrinking metal: 150°C.

IMPORTANT: Use an oxyacetylene torch only.

IMPORTANT: Use of a carbon electrode is prohibited.

Checking the temperature

• If there is no natural visual indication of the metal temperature, we
recommend the use of temperature indicating crayons,
• the marks made on the panel with a temperature indicating crayon in
the area to be heated change colour when the temperature is
reached.

C - GRINDING AND SANDING

Care must be taken when grinding and sanding aluminium surfaces using
abrasive discs:

IMPORTANT: Never use an abrasive which has been used on ferrous

metals. Iron particles deposited on the surface of the
abrasives used on steel may become embedded in the
aluminium.

Iron particles embedded in the aluminium may lead to corrosion

developing under the paint layer.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
110
Section 12

III - WELDING ALUMINIUM USING THE MIG PROCESS

Aluminium can be welded using a MIG welding set which has been specially
adapted for this type of metal.

Some welding sets can be used for welding steel, aluminium and MIG
welding-brazing by changing the following items:

• wire coil,

• torch, lead and supply assembly,

• fuse wire drive rollers,

• gas bottle (pure argon).

IV - FILLING

IMPORTANT: The application of polyester filler directly onto aluminium is

strictly forbidden.

In all cases prior to applying filler, apply a primer and allow to dry.

C3 PLURIEL BODYWORK
111
Section 12

V- PAINTING ALUMINIUM PANELS

A - UNDERCOATS FOR ALUMINIUM PANELS

1 - Painting: new panels

New parts sold by the replacement parts department are
cataphoresis-treated.
From this initial layer (cataphoresis or reactive primer), the painting
process is the same as that used on steel:
• degreasing of the surface,
• sanding,
• application of a primer coat,
• sanding,
• application of the top coat.

2 - Painting: repaired panels

a - Reactive primer
This is the first coat to be applied to a bare aluminium panel.
Only use the recommended reactive primers.
Warning: The primers which have been used on steel for the last
fifteen years or so no longer contain chromates and
therefore cannot be used on aluminium.
Chromates are toxic additives contained in primers.

IMPORTANT: A face mask must be worn when paint spraying.

b - Filling

IMPORTANT: The application of polyester filler directly onto

aluminium is strictly forbidden.

c - Panels containing bare areas

When part of an aluminium panel is bare, one of the following
products must be applied as a base coat:
• an EPOXY primer,
• a primer containing chromates.
