Keep these instructions for the full service life of the product.

Read these instructions carefully and look at the device to familiarise yourself with it before you install
the update. The following special information may be displayed in this documentation or on the device

Use the operating manual to operate the Wallbox and to obtain explanations of errors on it. Use the
installation instructions to install the Wallbox and to store and transport it.

You will find information and warnings about possible dangers at various points in the manual. The
symbols used in the manual have the following meanings:

WARNING

Means that death or serious physical injury may occur if the appropriate precautions are not
taken.

CAUTION

Means that property damage or minor physical injury may occur if the appropriate precautions

IMPORTANT

Means that property damage may occur if the appropriate precautions are not taken.

This warning points out the possible consequences of touching electrostatically sensitive

General information

This manual gives you the information you require to update the firmware of a Wallbox using a USB
stick.

These instructions apply to devices of the following types:

BMW i Wallbox
BMW i Wallbox Plus

Note

Refer to the instructions and safety information in the installation manual for the Wallbox.

A firmware update does not require the RFID cards to undergo a teach-in process again, if the
RFID option is installed.

Prepare the charging station

Removing the housing cover

1. Press the two interlocks 1 for the housing


cover on the underside of the Wallbox
upwards.
The housing cover should then jump out
slightly at the bottom.

2. Swing the housing cover forwards a little on


the underside 2.
3. Then release the housing cover by raising it 3.

Note
Keep the housing cover in a safe place to
prevent it being scratched or suffering other
damage.

Remove the terminal panel cover

1. Undo the four screws used to secure the


terminal panel cover 1.

ESD

Danger of damage. Electronic components may be destroyed if touched.

Before handling modules, perform an electrical discharge process by touching a metallic


earthed object.

2. Remove the terminal panel cover. The terminal


panel 2 is now accessible.

WARNING

The cover over the connection area 3 for the mains voltage may only be removed by a qualified
electrician.

Firmware update

Prepare USB stick

1. Format a USB stick with the FAT32 file system.


2. Copy the following files into the root directory
of the empty USB stick. Do not use any
folders.
firmware.bin
firmware.chk

Complete firmware update

1. Insert the USB stick into USB port X5 on the charging station.
2. Press the service buttonT1 until the 1st signal tone sounds to reset the charging station.
The firmware update will now be completed. The internal status LED next to the service
button will now flash in various colours and at various intervals. The update process can take
up to 1 minute.
After the installation has completed, the internal status LED will be lit permanently in green.
3. Remove the USB stick to trigger a restart of the charging station.
4. Check the firmware version.
Binary version display with a colour code on the status LED during power up.
The firmware version is also displayed in the web interface of the charging station.

Binary version display

The latest main version 3 is assigned the colour orange here. In the binary display this colour stands
for 0.

The sub-version is displayed by the binary display of the LED segments.

Example: Version 3.07

LED1 LED2 LED3 LED4

Colour code: orange blue blue blue

Binary value: 0 1 1 1

Binary value code: 8 4 2 1

Decimal value: 0 4 2 1 4+2+1=7 (sub-


version)

Concluding work

Install the terminal panel cover

Note

The Wallbox must not be permanently commissioned if this cover is missing or damaged.
Alternative covers must not be used.

Fastening screws
1. Insert the terminal panel cover 1 again.
2. Install the terminal panel cover again using the
four screws.

Housing marking
1. Tighten the four screws until the housing
markings on the right and left of the terminal
panel cover are flush with the housing.
2. The terminal panel cover must correctly seal
the housing.

Increased force is required for the self-tapping


screws: 3.5 Nm.

Install the housing cover

Note

This cover is not relevant for the safe operation of the Wallbox.

Attach the housing cover


1. Attach the housing cover at the top, and
ensure that the hooks on the housing cover are
correctly attached 1.
2. Press the cover downwards and then swing
the housing cover 2 backwards.
The housing cover must slide into the bottom
guides without any major resistance.

IMPORTANT
Ensure that the housing cover is correctly
positioned in the housing guide on all sides.
There must be only a uniform minimum
gap.

Locks
1. Press the bottom section of the housing cover
on to the Wallbox until the locks 1 fully engage.
