NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a research-intensive university with globally acknowledged strengths in science and engineering. The university has roots that go back to 1955 when Nanyang University was set up. Today, NTU has four colleges (Engineering, Science, Business and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences) with 12 schools, and three autonomous entities, the National Institute of Education, the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, and the Earth Observatory of Singapore. NTU provides a high-quality global education to more than 21,000 undergraduates and 9,400 graduate students with a teaching and research staff strength of 2500.

SBS has recruited world class scientists, from academic and research institutions both locally and from the finest universities across the world. All faculty members are active in research, and are at the forefront of their respective fields. To support undergraduate teaching and graduate research programmes, SBS has established over 60 research laboratories. A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) facility is being set up to complement the double degree programme - Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences from NTU and Bachelor of Medicine from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The research arm of the facility will have a strong link with the Drug Discovery Centre of the School. The School is equipped with the latest and most advanced instruments and technologies for life sciences research. Our core facilities include key equipment and support in proteomics, genomics, cell biology, structural biology, chemical biology, as well as an animal house complete with a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory. Detailed research interest of the faculty members can be found at http://www.sbs.ntu.edu.sg/research.

SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) was established in 2001 as part of NTUs strategic plan to become a comprehensive university. SBS is committed to implementing current best practices in the training of graduate students towards the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Biological Sciences. Our major objective is to produce research scientists who have deep and wide knowledge in biological sciences and the flexibility to engage in diverse research areas as well as to support the biomedical and biotechnological industries.

DEGREES BY RESEARCH Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science Students enrolled in graduate programmes by research may be admitted on a full-time or part-time basis. Research scholarships are available to outstanding full-time candidates. Students are required to participate in research and fulfill course work requirement. All students will receive relevant research skill training by their research supervisors. Students may pursue their research in one of the following divisions: 1. Chemical Biology and Biotechnology 2. Genomics and Genetics 3. Molecular and Cell Biology 4. Structural and Computational Biology ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A good B.Sc degree (first class honours or second class honours upper division or equivalent) in Science/Life Sciences or related field is required for the PhD programme. A Masters degree is not an absolute requirement. A good B.Sc degree (as above) is required for the Master of Science programme. Good GRE/GATE and TOEFL scores (for international applicants whose native language is not English) will be advantageous.
