Thank you for buying an Avensis. We trust this Brief Guide will enable you to become familiar with your vehicles basic operations and assist you in enjoying your vehicle. This brief guide does not replace or substitute the Owners Manual, which you will find in the vehicles glove compartment. It is important that you review the full Owners Manual as well as any further supplementary manuals as this will allow you to familiarise yourself with the operating and safety instructions and to handle the vehicle within its limitations. Please do read all documents in your pack as this will ensure you get maximum performance from your car and learn about related services offered. Smart entry & Start system

The following operations can be performed simply by carrying the electronic key on your person. (The driver should always carry the electronic key.)

Child rear door protection lock

The door cannot be opened from inside the vehicle when the locks are set. These locks can be set to prevent children from opening the rear doors. Push down the rear door switches to lock the rear doors.

Child restraint system

Child restraint systems are classified into the following 5 groups according to the regulation ECE No. 44: Group 0: Up to 10 kg or 22lbs (0-9 months) Group I: 9-18 kg or 20-40lbs (9 months-4 years) Group III: 22-36 kg or 48-79lbs(6 years-12 years) (A) Baby seat equal to Group 0 and 0+ of ECE No. 44 Group 0+: Up to 13 kg or 29lbs (0-2 years) Group II: 15-25 kg or 33-55lbs (4 years -7 years) (C) Junior seat equal to Group III of ECE No. 44

(B) Child seat equal to Group 0+, I and II of ECE No. 44

Head restraint height adjustment

For reasons of safety your vehicle is fitted with active head restraints Under no circumstances should any accessories be attached to these (e.g. portable DVD players, etc).

Seat belts

1. To fasten the seat belt push the tab into the buckle until it clicks. 2. Press the release button to unfasten the seat belt.

Steering wheel adjustment

Manual tilt & telescopic steering wheel Auto tilt away

ON

Hold the steering wheel and press the lever down. Adjust the position by moving the steering wheel horizontaly and vertically.

When the "ENGINE START STOP" switch is turned OFF, or when the key* is removed from the engine switch, the steering wheel returns to its stowed position by moving up and away to enable easier driver entry and exit. Switching to the ACCESSORY / IGNITION mode or inserting the key* will return the steering wheel to its original position. * Depending on model. Only covers vehicles with power tilt and telescopic steering wheel covers.

After adjustment, pull the lever up to secure the steering wheel.

The following gauges, meters and displays illuminate when the engine switch is in the ON position.

Vehicles with smart entry & start system

The following gauges, meters and displays illuminate when the ENGINE START STOP switch is in the IGNITION ON mode.

Multi-information display Tachometer

Displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute.

Odometer and trip meter Odometer

Displays the total distance the vehicle has been driven.

Trip meter
Trip meters A and B can be used to record and display different distances independently.

SHIFT

Odometer/trip meter and trip meter reset button

Switches between odometer and trip meter displays. Pushing and holding the button will reset the trip meter when the trip meter is being displayed.

DISP./ instrument panel light control button

Press: Switches the multi-information display. Turn: To adjust the brightness of the instrument panel light.

Clock
Displays the time. Adjusting the brightness of the dashboard can only be done when the headlights are ON

Fuel gauge
Displays the quantity of fuel remaining in the tank.

Engine coolant temperature gauge

Displays the engine coolant temperature. 8

Speedometer
Displays the vehicle speed.

Warning lights inform the driver of malfunctions in any of the vehicles systems.

*1 These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the ON position (without smart entry & start system) or the ENGINE START STOP switch is turned to the IGNITION ON mode (with smart entry & start system). They will turn off after the engine is started. There may be a malfunction if a light does not come on, or if the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota centre.

Lights
The headlights can be operated manually or automatically
The front position, tail, license plate and instrument panel lights turn on. The headlights and all lights listed above turn on, normal driving The headlights and all lights listed above turn on and off automatically. (When the engine is in the ON position)

Turning on the high beam headlights

1. With the headlights on, push the lever away to turn on the high beams. Pull the lever back to the centre position to turn the high beams off. 2. You can flash the high beams with the headlights on or off by pulling the lever towards you, and releasing it to turn them off. 9

Electric windows and windows lock

Keep fingers away from moving windows

Pressing the switch locks the passenger windows preventing accidental opening or closing.

Starting your vehicle

For vehicles without smart entry key positions are as follows:
1. Lock:- The steering wheel is locked and the key can be removed. 2. ACC:- Some electrical equipment such as audio can be used. 3. On:- All electrical equipment can be used. 4. Start:- Starts the engine

NB For diesel vehicles: The engine should not be started until the indicatior light goes out.

1. The driver should carry the key with them. 2. The Engine Start Stop button is used to start the vehicle

Tips for windscreen demisting :

1. Switch AUTO button off (light is OFF) 2. Switch A/C ON (light is ON) 3. Switch air recirc off (light is OFF)

Set up display to access clock setting

Before setting
1. Display the settings screen on the multi-information display when the vehicle is stopped. 2. Press and hold the DISP. button or DISP switch to enter the adjustment mode. 3. Select the desired item on the menu screen Press and hold the DISP. button or DISP switch to enter the adjustment mode.

Setting the clock

1. Select CLOCK on the menu screen 2. Press the DISP. button or DISP switch to adjust the hours. After setting the hours, wait for 5 seconds until the bar disappears, and confirm that the hour has been input.

3. Press the DISP. button or DISP switch to adjust the minutes. After setting the minutes, wait for 5 seconds until the bar disappears, and confirm that the minutes have been input.

Setting the clock format

1. Select CLOCK FORMAT on the menu screen 2. Select the desired clock format. Press and hold the DISP button or DISP switch to input the choice.

To exit :
To go back to the original screen, scroll the menu by pushing the DISP button till you get to BACK then press and hold again the DISP button. 13

Fully depress the clutch pedal before operating the gear lever, and then release it slowly, once a gear is selected

Vehicles without smart entry & start system:

While the engine switch is in the ON position, depress the brake pedal and move the gear lever.

Vehicles with smart entry & start system:

While the ENGINE START STOP switch is in the IGNTION MODE ON mode, depress and hold the brake pedal and move the gear lever. D = normal automatic driving style M = manual driving style, (6 stages of gear) Select or use paddle shift (if equipped)

Gear lever for R (Reverse)

Lift up the ring and shift lever to the R position.

Parking brake
1. Press the switch to apply parking brake 2. Pull the switch to release parking brake

Parking brake operation

Vehicles without smart entry & start system The parking brake can only be released with the engine switch in the ON position. Vehicles smart entry & start system

Light will come on when fully engaged. (A light operational noise may be heard)

The parking brake can only be released with the engine switch in the IGNITION ON mode.

Automatic release (vehicles with manual transmission) When starting to drive, operation of the accelerator pedal or clutch pedal will disengage the parking brake. 14

Fuel tank opening

Turn the engine switch to the LOCK position and ensure that all the doors and windows are closed.

Opening the fuel tank cap

Press the fuel filler door opener switch Turn the fuel tank cap slowly to open. Hang the fuel tank cap on the back of the fuel filler door

Vehicles with smart entry & start system

Turn the ENGINE START STOP switch OFF and ensure that all the doors and windows are closed.

Take care to select the correct fuel.

Bonnet opening

Release the lock from the inside of the vehicle to open the bonnet. 1. Pull the bonnet release lever. The bonnet will pop up slightly.

Release the bonnet catch and lift the bonnet.

Caution :
Be careful when you pick up the rod, it might be hot.

Hold the bonnet open by inserting the supporting rod into the slot. Close: gently drop the bonnet from approximately 200mm

What is Eco-Driving?

Eco-Driving Savings
Total potential saving of 20 - 30%.
Roof load increases wind drag and therefore consumption. Open windows increase fuel consumption by an average of 5%. Air Conditioning can result in 10 - 25% extra fuel consumption.
