Narrative Report
Seminar-workshop and Skills Enhancement in Radio
Broadcasting

School-based journalism auditions are essential to assess potential journalists' skills in

areas like writing, broadcasting, and sometimes even photography or design. This ensures the
school publication selects the most qualified individuals to represent them in competitions or
contribute effectively to the publication. On January 7, 2024, The FIBER (organization for
school publication) conducted a seminar-workshop and skills enhancement in Radio
Broadcasting. This activity coincided with the two-day school-based journalism audition,
aiming to ignite a passion for journalism amongst students and identify the best students to
represent the school in the upcoming press conferences.

The event commenced at 9:00 AM, spearheaded by Mrs. Krystle Joy Bayubay, the School
Paper Adviser, Zyra Agustin, the Editor-in-Chief, and the dedicated members of The FIBER's
editorial board. Senior editors, Alfrey Andrada and Mitch Taguiam, served as the lively
hosts, kicking off the program with the national anthem led by Princess Alvarado and a
prayer delivered by Janelle Tungcul. Zyra Agustin warmly welcomed the aspiring radio
broadcasters, followed by Mrs. Bayubay's insightful orientation. She outlined the activity's
objectives – to hone student skills and select the finest contenders for the congressional
journalism competition.

The heart of the activity lay in the radio broadcasting contest. With two categories –
Filipino and English – an interesting twist awaited the participants. Filipino fact sheets were
provided to the English broadcasters, while English fact sheets were given to the Filipino
broadcasters. This challenged them to adapt and craft a compelling news script within an
hour, emphasizing the importance of not just a captivating voice but also proficient writing
skills in radio broadcasting.

The afternoon session focused on showcasing vocal talent. Each participant was given the
opportunity to read their scripts, broadcasting in both Filipino and English. A distinguished
panel of judges oversaw the competition – Mrs. Krystle Joy Bayubay, the School Paper
Adviser, Mr. Romel Nebab, Teacher II and a News Writing coach, and Mrs. Marlyn Simon,
Teacher III.

All in all, ten enthusiastic students participated in the Filipino Radio Broadcasting
elimination, while nine students competed in the English category. After displaying their
broadcasting prowess, the judges had a difficult task, ultimately selecting the top five in each
category.

Filipino Radio Broadcasting Finalists (in no particular order):

 Andrei Domingo
 Henry Tabangcura
 Kathleen Mae Balicha
 Hannah Rivera
 Kate Guaves

English Radio Broadcasting Finalists (in no particular order):

 Reynald Mangulad
 Janine Mae Lasam
 Kenshin Bangayan
 Kristine Ramos
 Precious Balauag

The chosen finalists will not only fill the immediate vacancies left by graduating senior
radio broadcasters, but they will also form the core of a formidable team poised to represent
the school with distinction at the upcoming Congressional Journalympics. This talented group
will continue to develop their skills throughout the coming academic year, ensuring a strong
and vibrant radio broadcasting presence for the school.

An inspiring closing remark was delivered by Mr. Romel Nebab, Teacher II and also a
coach in News Writing. He emphasized the vital role student journalists play in our lives,
congratulating the winners and encouraging those who didn't cut to persist in their pursuit of
radio broadcasting. Sir Romel also highlighted the true essence of journalism as it provides a
platform for those who might not otherwise be heard. Radio broadcasters can amplify the
voices of marginalized communities, hold powerful institutions accountable, and give a
human dimension to complex issues.

The FIBER's Seminar workshop and Skills Enhancement in Radio Broadcasting proved
to be a success, igniting a passion for journalism and identifying talented individuals ready to
represent the school on a larger stage.
