GENERAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
1 Emergency Signal for MAIN ENGINE FAILURE
“ Three Short Blast” of the ship’s horn and whistle.
2. Order to Abandon Ship (if necessary):
Captain's announcement over the public address system: "Abandon Ship."
3. Communication System:
Announcements made over the Public Address system give passengers and personnel clear
instructions.
MAIN ENGINE FAILURE PROCEDURE:
1. Alert: Notify the bridge and engine room of the engine failure. Sound the appropriate
alarm or signal.
2. Assess: Check the engine room for any visible issues or alarms. Determine the cause of
the failure if possible.
3. Secure: Engage the emergency stop if needed. Ensure that all systems are secured and
safe.
4. Backup Power: Switch to auxiliary power or backup systems if available.
5. Communicate: Inform relevant authorities or nearby vessels of the situation and request
assistance if necessary.
CREW DUTIES IN RELATION TO PASSENGERS:
1. Safety Briefings: Conduct safety briefings and demonstrations to inform passengers
about emergency procedures, life jacket use, and evacuation routes.
2. Assistance: Provide assistance to passengers in distress or those with special needs,
ensuring they are safely accommodated and guided during emergencies.
3. Supervision: Monitor and supervise passenger activities to ensure compliance with
safety regulations and to address any potential hazards.
4. Communication: Keep passengers informed about the vessel’s status, changes in plans,
and any emergency instructions or updates.
5. Evacuation: Oversee and assist with the orderly evacuation of passengers in an
emergency, ensuring that everyone follows the proper procedures and reaches the
muster stations or lifeboats safely.
MAINTENANCE OF EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT:
- In the event of a main engine failure, the muster list should include instructions for all
crew and passengers to gather at designated muster stations, follow emergency
procedures for abandoning ship if necessary, don life jackets, and await further
instructions from the crew.
SUBSTITUTE FOR KEY PERSONNEL:
- Designate key crew members in the muster list to handle the main engine failure
procedure. Ensure these personnel are clearly identified and trained to manage the
situation effectively.
PASSENGER SHIP SPECIFIC PROCEDURES:
- In the event of engine failure on a passenger ship, follow the established emergency
