THYROID GLAND
Shape: It is butterfly in shape, formed of an isthmus & 2 lateral lobes
(a small pyramidal lobe may project upward from the isthmus)
Site: It lies in the lower part of the neck
The isthmus lies in front of 2nd, 3rd & 4th tracheal rings
The apex of the lateral lobe extend to the thyroid cartilage & the
base reaches the 5th or 6th tracheal rings

Relations:
Isthmus:
Anterior relation: Skin & fascia; infrahyoid muscles; sternomastoid
Posterior relation: 2nd, 3rd & 4th tracheal rings
Lateral lobes:
Anterolateral surface: Skin fascia; infrahyoid muscles; sternomastoid
Post surface: Parathyroid glands (two on each side); common
carotid artery (inside carotid sheath)
Medial surface: Above: Larynx & pharynx (with external laryngeal N
in between. Below: Trachea & esophagus (with recurrent laryngeal
N in between)
Blood supply:
Arterial supply: -Superior thyroid artery: from ECA
-Inferior thyroid artery: from thyrocervical trunk from subclavian A
-Thyroid ima artery: from arch of aorta (it may be absent)
Venous drainage: -Superior thyroid vein: drain in IJV
-Middle thyroid vein: drain in IJV
-Inferior thyroid vein: drain in brachiocephalic vein
Lymphatic drainage: Prelaryngeal; pretracheal; paratracheal &
deep cervical lymph nodes
