Synopsis

During my summer internship at ANH Engineering Services, I held the role of CAD
designer, where I extensively utilized Creo software to contribute to several key
engineering projects. My primary responsibilities involved the creation of detailed 3D
models and 2D engineering drawings for mechanical components, assemblies, and
systems. I worked closely with the engineering team to interpret design briefs and
transform conceptual ideas into manufacturable designs.

One of my notable tasks was assisting in the development of complex mechanical parts,
which required precise geometric modeling, applying constraints, and ensuring the
structural integrity of designs. I was also responsible for refining existing models by
implementing design optimizations based on feedback from senior engineers and through
simulations.

In addition to modeling, I gained hands-on experience in creating technical

documentation, including dimensioning, tolerance specifications, and material selection,
all of which were critical for the manufacturing process. I learned to troubleshoot and
resolve design issues by leveraging Creo’s advanced tools for assembly constraints,
motion analysis, and interference checks.

Throughout the internship, I engaged in regular design reviews and collaborated in cross-
functional teams, which improved my communication skills and exposed me to the
importance of teamwork in a real-world engineering environment. This experience not
only honed my proficiency in Creo but also deepened my understanding of the
engineering design process, from concept through to production.

The internship was a valuable opportunity to apply my CAD skills in a professional

CHAPTER-2 ABOUT CREO SOFTWARE

PRO-E was the software which was preferred over the other ones to be taught by the guides.

Creo, the shorthand name for Creo Parametric, (formerly known as Pro Engineer) is a powerful and
intuitive 3D CAD software optimized to address the challenges organizations face as they design, analyze,
and share information with downstream partners.

Developed by PTC, the original pioneers of parametric CAD, Creo is a powerful foundational software
supporting an integrated family of product design tools used by thousands of manufacturers worldwide.

The Creo family of design applications, modules, and extension speak a common language, meet the
needs of different stakeholders, and truly combine parametric and direct modeling techniques. Creo helps
build bridges instead of barriers between you, your ideas, your teammates, your partners, and your
customers.

Creo Parametric 3D CAD software can easily be customized and extended through the addition of
modules and extensions, but the product family also contains stand-alone purpose build design
applications such as Creo Simulate, Creo Direct, Creo Layout & Creo Options Modeler. Each stand-alone
app serves a different purpose in the product development process.

From concept to design to analysis, to effectively sharing your information with downstream partners
(such as manufacturing and technical publications), Creo is a rock-solid foundation for any design group.
It supports the needs of modern manufacturing and product development organizations.

What makes Creo Parametric such a powerful product design and development tool in your
company’s quest for a competitive advantage?

There are many unique aspects of the innovative Creo product family – Here are my top 4.

1. Flexibility :-
For designers who are involved in multiple phases of the product development process,
PTC Creo provides scalable access to the right capabilities. Subscription licensing enables to adjust and
right-size their software over time.

For those involved in specific aspects of the product development process, there are apps tailored to meet
individual needs. Regardless of your role in the product development process, you can use the right tool at
the right time.

2. Interoperability:-
All of the products in the PTC Creo family speak the same language. Because of this
common language, your data flows seamlessly between different apps. This means no more recreating
work as you move through the design process and no more walls to throw your data over.
3. Combined benefits of both parametric and direct modeling :-
PTC Creo integrates the power of both
3D CAD modeling approaches into a single system, so you get the power and control of parametric
modeling combined with the speed and flexibility that’s only available through direct modeling.

4. Multi-cad Data Handling :-

PTC Creo includes an incredible convince ability to work with and edit data
from any CAD source. This means no recreating designs because of incompatible data, and no need to ask
your partners or customers to change CAD software systems.

Key Features:

1. Parametric Modeling :-
Parametric design allows engineers to build models based on parameters
and constraints. This means that once dimensions and relationships are set, any changes to them
automatically update the model, ensuring consistency throughout the design. For instance, if a designer
changes the length of a part, all other related dimensions (like holes or other features tied to that
length) will adjust accordingly. This is particularly useful when managing complex designs where
small changes need to propagate correctly. It promotes design intent, reducing the chances of errors
when modifications are needed.

2. Direct Modeling:-
Parametric design allows engineers to build models based on parameters and
constraints.
It promotes design intent, reducing the chances of errors
when modifications are needed

3. Simulation and Analysis:-

Creo comes with integrated simulation tools, allowing engineers to
perform structural, thermal, and modal analysis directly within the design environment. This means
that users can validate the performance of their designs without needing to export models to separate
simulation software. Creo Simulate helps predict how a product will behave under stress, thermal
loads, or vibrational forces. By simulating real-world conditions, designers can identify weak points
and optimize designs early in the development cycle, reducing the need for physical prototypes.

4. Generative Design:-
Creo’s generative design tools use AI algorithms to create optimized designs
based on specific inputs such as material, weight, and strength requirements. Engineers set the
constraints, and the software explores multiple design iterations to find the most efficient solution. This
process can generate innovative designs that reduce material use, improve performance, and shorten
development cycles. Generative design is particularly valuable for applications in aerospace,
automotive, and other industries where lightweight, strong structures are critical.
5. Sheet Metal Design:-
Sheet metal tools allow users to design components as if they were made
from sheet metal, incorporating features like bends, flanges, and cutouts. Once the 3D design is
complete, the software can automatically unfold the part into a 2D flat pattern, ready for
manufacturing. Creo handles all the complexities involved in maintaining bend allowances and corner
relief, ensuring that the part can be accurately fabricated. This feature is widely used in industries like
automotive, appliances, and enclosures where metal forming is a core process.

6. Surface Modeling:-
Surfacing tools in Creo are designed for creating intricate, freeform shapes that
cannot be easily constructed using solid geometry alone. These advanced tools allow users to define
complex curves and surfaces with precision, making them ideal for industries like automotive,
aerospace, and industrial design. The software supports parametric surfaces that are controlled by
constraints, as well as freeform modeling for more organic shapes. This ensures a high level of design
flexibility and detail, which is critical for products requiring aesthetic and aerodynamic properties..

7. Assembly Modeling :-
Creo’s assembly design tools allow users to build complex systems by
combining multiple components into an overall product. Users can define component relationships
(such as mates, joints, and motion) to simulate how parts fit together. The software includes powerful
tools for detecting interference between parts and allows for real-time dynamic simulation to check for
collisions, moving parts, or other assembly issues. Large assemblies can be managed efficiently with
subassemblies and assembly hierarchies, ensuring that all components fit and work together correctly
before physical production.

8. Augmented Reality (AR) Integration: Creo's AR tools allow users to place their designs in real-
world environments, giving stakeholders a better sense of scale and context. This feature is useful for
design reviews, sales demonstrations, and training sessions, as it allows users to visualize the product
in the intended environment without the need for physical prototypes. Creo generates AR experiences
directly from the CAD model, which can be shared and accessed via mobile devices or AR headsets,
offering an immersive way to interact with designs.

9. Additive manufacturing :-
Creo’s additive manufacturing tools facilitate the design and
optimization of parts for 3D printing. The software includes tools for lattice structure creation,
topology optimization, and automatic generation of support structures needed during printing. It
enables designers to explore lightweight structures that are difficult or impossible to manufacture
through traditional methods. This feature helps reduce material usage, increase strength-to-weight
ratios, and streamline the design-to-print workflow by integrating the manufacturing setup directly into
the CAD environment.

10. Tooling and Mold Design :-

Creo offers dedicated tools for designing molds, dies, and other
tooling. These features include automatic splitting of core and cavity molds, electrode design, and
specialized components like runners and ejector pins. The software also helps identify potential defects
such as undercuts or thin sections that may cause issues during the molding process. With these
capabilities, engineers can streamline mold creation, ensuring that parts are manufacturable and tooling
is optimized, all while reducing lead times for mold development.
11. 2D Drafting :-
Creo offers dedicated tools for designing molds, dies, and other tooling. These
features include automatic splitting of core and cavity molds, electrode design, and specialized
components like runners and ejector pins. The software also helps identify potential defects such as
undercuts or thin sections that may cause issues during the molding process. With these capabilities,
engineers can streamline mold creation, ensuring that parts are manufacturable and tooling is
optimized, all while reducing lead times for mold development.

12. Rendering and Visualisation :-

Creo includes tools for rendering models into photorealistic
images, which can be used for presentations, marketing, and customer reviews. Users can apply
materials, adjust lighting, and create high-quality visuals that represent the final product. With real-
time shading and lighting, designers can get immediate feedback on the appearance of the product.
This capability is useful for communicating design concepts to stakeholders who may not be familiar
with CAD models, enabling better decision-making early in the design process.

13. Data Management and Collaboration :-

Creo integrates with PTC’s Windchill for
comprehensive product lifecycle management (PLM), allowing teams to manage product data, track
revisions, and collaborate more effectively. Windchill integration ensures that design data is stored
centrally, with controlled access, version control, and workflow management for approvals and
reviews. Additionally, Creo allows multiple users to work on the same project simultaneously, with
real-time updates and collaboration tools, reducing bottlenecks in the design process and facilitating
better teamwork across distributed teams.

14. Model-Based Definition(MBD) :-

MBD enables designers to fully annotate 3D models with all
the necessary manufacturing and inspection information, reducing reliance on traditional 2D drawings.
By embedding dimensions, tolerances, and other annotations directly into the 3D model, MBD allows
manufacturers and quality control teams to work directly with the 3D data, ensuring consistency and
reducing misinterpretations. This feature helps streamline communication and enhances the digital
thread, allowing all stakeholders to reference the same source of truth for the product definition

15. Customisable User Interface :-

Creo allows users to personalize the software interface by
customizing toolbars, menus, and shortcuts. This enables users to streamline their workflows by
organizing the tools and commands they use most frequently. By tailoring the interface to specific
tasks or projects, users can reduce time spent navigating menus and increase overall productivity.
Additionally, companies can create standard templates and interfaces that align with their specific
processes, ensuring consistency across teams and departments.
Industry Applications:

Creo is used across various industries, such as automotive, aerospace, consumer products,
electronics, and industrial machinery, thanks to its versatility in handling everything from the
simplest parts to highly complex assemblies. It excels in environments that require tight integration
between engineering, simulation, and manufacturing.

Advantages:

Efficiency: The parametric nature of Creo helps designers work more efficiently by automating
updates when design changes are made, reducing time and effort in rework.

Innovation: Creo’s advanced tools, such as topology optimization and generative design,
encourage innovative solutions to engineering challenges.

Collaboration: Creo is built for collaboration, with data management and sharing facilitated
through integration with PTC’s Windchill PLM platform, ensuring that teams can work together
seamlessly, even in large projects.
